This video came at a serendipitous time, I'm a good few months into making the shift of my Mercedes biz from side hustle to full on shop, and I'm just getting bit at nearly every turn. I've got clientele, and a solid reputation in the community; sprung from over a decade helping others on the forums and sharing Mercedes 16v projects through social media. I'm regularly getting cars shipped-in, from in and out of state; getting CISe correction, and/or other restoration work, and finding a good location was the first roadblock. I'm in CA (I know, I know) and all kinds of warehouse areas, zoned auto and heavy industrial mind you, had their brokers/landlords denying anything auto related. It's crazy! I've ended up in barn of all places, located in a small rural area between larger towns. It was once used as a cockfighting "arena" (no joke), and is also adjacent to a legal cannabis grow (CA, I know, part deux). Another big problem for me has been local flakers, (distant folks have been far more serious/committed) and folks that try to bring their own parts and often forget things, causing a huge time sink. That's cost me dearly already, and got me too close to losing my location in the first month! Does the rollercoaster ever slow down, Pierre?

It's quite a tragedy that people are not more angry about the dismantlement of this country's ideals.
Same vein different topic, I was in college and was going to start a vape company. Unfortunately, I prioritized my education. By the time I was done with college, the FDA regulations basically made it impossible for anyone to do so unless they had multiple millions of dollars. Everyone who was already a business was grandfathered, but now it's required to have each flavor and strength tested, to the tune of about $250,000. Usually there are four strengths per flavor 0, 3, 6, and 12mg. So, every flavor produced costs about $1,000,000 to submit for approval, and there is no guarantee. So, it was essentially regulated out of existence for the little people. This is not the way we build a stronger country.

A fellow I follow here on UA-cam used to have a computer repair shop in NYC (Louis Rossman). He looked at different states like Florida and Tennessee. He finally settled in Texas.

It is only $300 for me to get business license here in San Diego. It is the rent that keeps me from opening a shop. The only onerous regulations for shop owners in California are some of the environmental inspections. It is nearly impossible to clean parts anymore. I end up using cans of brake cleaner and paper towels. Parking is also a big problem in any congested area. If the rents were lower I would be restoring British cars, but I simply cannot afford the space.

One thing I've never comprehended is the "self-employment tax". So, you create a small business, from the ground up as most folks do, figure out how to make ends meet, keep the lights on, etc., and at the end of the year, you pay income taxes on what you earned. Cool, sounds about right. But then comes the "self employment tax". What is that for and where does that go? I was also rudely awakened to the fact that when you are self-employed, you do not "pay into" the unemployment fund, so if your business is hurting and you decide to shut it down, you will not get unemployment unless you work for a qualified employer for at least six months in most States. So that means you have to go onto welfare and Medicaid. Nice, especially after all those years paying that "self employment tax". And, you're absolutely right, it's things like what you said plus stupid things like these additional taxes that make it either impossible to start a business, run a business, or hire employees for your business. The game has been rigged against mom and pop. That's why in places like the Northeast and California, mom and pop are dead. It's big business after big business and a lot of strip malls. Sad. Much love, brother! Keep up the good work and the good fight!

I swore that when I owned my own company and paid myself a salary I paid unemployment on that salary and could have taken unemployment.

I live in that north east state and have my own business and am well aware of the costs of starting and keeping a real ‘small business’ afloat in this blue state. You’re take on the situation here is spot on. I’m hoping your friend comes out on top as we could use a quality MB shop like yours up here!

I'm glad I repair musical instruments, almost every place I lived has been happy to have a musical instrument shop in their town, the problem is people don't want to pay what it it costs. I ran into problems with the township wanting to tax me every year for tools I bought 20&30 years ago.

These are all great points I agree wholeheartedly. It's the effect of electing bots who have never run a business in their life. A large number of them have not only not run their own business they have never even worked for a small medium or large size business. They have worked for government forever so they think that over regulation by business is good.
I live 10 blocks from George Floyd Square in the bluest of blue states. Ilhan Omar is my representative. So I know the issues well. 😩
Also Thank you for the recommendation on the videos about California they are great.

I’m in the restaurant industry and in this last election the city passed Proposition 82, which claims to fix a problem that doesn’t exist. It was passed a few years ago and was subsequently overturned by the restaurant industry because all it will do is create unnecessary problems and cause people to lose their jobs and small businesses to close. My owners were just as bummed as their employees were. So often, good intentions or not, when government inserts itself where it shouldn’t be, things get worse.

Escape that tyranny and seek a free state to call home. The world is difficult enough and to work 9 months out of the year just to merely exist and pay the rulers is sickening. Your friend deserves better and whatever state he’s in doesn’t deserve him.
