Thanks for providing this excellent video. My 82 300d glow plug light won't light and the fuse is good. I tried waiting 15 seconds but it still won't start. Can I safely power my glow plugs with battery voltage to start my car to get my vehicle home without shorting anything. I believe the relay is faulty. Thanks
If you take your glow plug out and put it into the glow plug connector whilst out of the engine and turn the ignition on should your glow plug light up.Thanks
Glow plug questions! 1) I've heard it said that if you try to start an engine before the glow plug light turns off you could damage a plug. Why? 2) If you have (already) started an engine while the glow plug light was not off is there any correct procedure to move forward to lessen any damage? Thank you for this informative video.
1. Mercedes set the glow plug relay to turn off when you start the engine. 2. If you're relay is stuck on, the glow plugs should be ok..but if they are staying on you may want to install a new gp relay.
The Pierre Hedary Mercedes-Benz Classic Specialist My relay was replaced with a brand MN new one by my shop. It worked fine the first two days. Now the glow plug light won't come on again. After I start it, it stays on for about 1 minute. The car starts and runs fine. They also tested the system and checked out fine. Have you ever seen or heard of a newly shipped MB relay be bad? That ia what they told me. It's a 95 E300.

Hi Pierre great info. I have an 83 240D and wanted to ask what the major components are on my glow plug system? I thought there were just the plugs, the relay (front left inner fender) and the "light" on the dash, right? Now I'm seeing another relay/box under the dash, to the left of the drivers legs, that some say control the "light" and time the relay. Confused. How many components are there? Thanks, in advance.
Avid MB Diesel owner here, restoring life to handfuls of vintage and classic diesels and finding them promising homes with a future is a hobby but right now I am asking about my daily driver 3.0 SDL... The car will start-up fine, usually quite quick, about 95% of the time. However during the other 5% what I encounter is a hard start that usually consists of approx. 3 long cycles of cranking. If I do not get it started, I try again in 10 minutes and have success (Ive put a 50a Charge on the car in that 1o min window as well, thought probably was unrelated). When/if I do update my glow-plugs, what is a sure-fire way to remove the manifold on this 603 oil burner? Ive stripped these bolts on different cars, but am considering an air-hammer type of tool... Lastly, how critical is it to ream the chamber during this process? Great material and Better Information! Keep up the good work! You've got a subscriber in me, friend!
Ryan, sorry for the late response. I would look at the glow plug relay as an absolute first. Huco has them for about $95.00. In my opinion, this is what it sounds like. To keep the bolts from stripping, use a 1/4 in drive hard composition 6mm allen socket, or a long 6mm allen tool, preferably 12 inches or more. You may also need a swivel.I usually tap them with a hammer to loosen them up.
Thanks Bro. Right now I had a bigger issue arise that took priority. It appears the crank bolt on the om603 completely removed itself on the highway! Im going to machine the rounded edges that the harmonic balanceer lockpin made when it became loose after the bolt going awol. I think it will be salvageable. If all is well, I will press on with the GP relay. Thanks for your time.
did the woodruff key shear, and did it damage the end of the crank? we used to fix this by drilling a guide pin hole in the crank and damper together, with the radiator and condesner moved.
hey Pierre, what are your thoughts on the manual glow plug switch conversions done by many? Recently had one done on my '85 240D. Was thinking of a replacement one made in India by Huco since the price Hella and VAICO made in Germany are quite steep, but since decided to just keep the manual indefinitely since it works pretty well + it makes for a good anti-theft device lol
In my fiat Palio 1.9D elx, i am having problem. I found that the glow plug indicator not lighting ON. But rest of the indicators like hand brake, engine oil level indicator, battery indicators are glowing. When i cranked its getting cranked. But vehicle is not starting. I checked all the fuses in engine side and fuse panel which is in the steering side, but i am unable to understand if there is any fault in any fuse box relay. Any ideas and guides in this regard, will be appreciated. Please help me to get service manual and electrical wiring manual. Thanks in advance
Very nice video with logical explanation. I have MB W212 2009 E350 CDI with glow plug light on after starting the engine. The light goes off after 2 min and than flickers for another 2 min in 20 sec intervals. I got error code glow output stage intermittent. What are your thoughts? Thank you
Hi, I have fitted 4 new glow plugs and a new relay but I sill have to turn ignition on and off about 20 to 30 times for the glow plug light to come on? Once on then quickly off, engine starts fine. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated 🙏
Hello, I recently bought a 1985 300d. The glow plug light used to turn on when I turned the key to ignition, but now the light doesn't turn on but the car starts and runs good
Hi Pierre, I think I fall under point 2 in this video, but you didn’t clarify when a globe plug does not activate and sends no light signal on the dashboard. I am experiencing that issue but it happens randomly, all depends on the day. But it’s a very risky situation because it can happened any time in the day, when I use the car. I have changed my globe plugs over a year and half ago. Could you please advise?

Hi I have Glow Plug Relay that when key turned on light comes on and off right away. Tested signal from Temp Sensor working if I open relay box and push the relay contract Glow Plug Light comes on and after holing 15 seconds on cold start engine starts perfect. Checked Relay is the 5 wire system to each Glow Plug.
I recently changed my plugs in a 1991 W124 Turbo. The new plugs were a little longer than the old ones. They worked fine for 3 days and then my glow plug light randomly stopped coming on until after I started and then would come on or it would come on and go off like normal but after starting the car it would come back on. Up until when the glow plug failed causing me to have to change them I had no issues.
Hi what is the voltage should be on glow plug I have Smart Fortwo 2006 I get .40 volts on the plug when I Strat the car but dos not turn on please let me know

Sir, I am trying to diagnose glow plug failure on a 6 cylinder SL300, 230 diesel, all 6 glow plugs were showing resistance in access of 300 Ohms , only one was at 3.7ohms, one at 16M ohms! however, when I put 12vold power supply across them from a bench power supply, hardly 1mA flowed through them, then I turned the voltage up on my powersupply to its maximum 35Volts, and something strange happened, within a few seconds the power supply voltage clamped down to approx 4 volts and current limit cut in at 5.5amps and the tips of the plugs started to glow red hot, so I worked out its internal resistance had changed from well over 300 ohms to its normal resistance of 1 ohm, some how all 5 plugs of various resistances got restored to their normal low resistance, how that happened is a mystery for me but i am guessing the heating element must be using some sort of semi-conducting material, hence 4volts clamping voltage at 5.5amp current limit. the 6th plug that showed well over 16 mega ohm did not get restored, so I placed them all back in, hoping the car would start easy now, it somewhat did, but still required a good few turns of cranking, so It was disappointing, T therefore went and bought all 6 new plugs as they were £10 each, replaced them still the car is not starting as it should, still takes long while to start but not as long as before I started to investigate the problem, in fact it would refuse to start at all and had to use starting spray through the air inlets, I checked the electronic relay module, I could get some pulse out of it, I am not sure what voltage these pulse are or weather i can test the plugs with a 12volts car battery where the current would be un- limiting, so do I stand a risk of burning out new plugs but i can try a continuous 12v dc from a car battery on an old plugs that has been revitalized by applying 35volts , someone also suggested that there may be a problem with the fuel injectors draining back and so needs more cranking to repressurise and expel any air, though i doubt that is the problem, I think the glow plugs do not come on for long enough and further more they are pulsed, so I am mot sure of these pulsed voltage is full 12v at well over 20amp pulse which may heat them rapidly and so my module may not be switching full power. What do you think of revitalising those glow plugs to their normal 1 ohm resistance> have you any explaination for that pehnomenon?
I have a 1984 300D there is only 3.3 volts output at the glow plug relay with connector to the glow plugs disconnected with the ignition switch is turned to the run position. There is also no glow plug light. Could the glow plug relay be bad? Relay does not click if it should. TIA
I've got a musso with a 4 cylinder Mercedes-Benz 2.0 liter engine from 2000. The glow plug relay has failed, but the ssangyong has stopped producing the original relay. I was able to locate a 5 cylinder relay, the power hook ups with one notable exception are marked and configured exactly the same (the wiring harness fits, and is marked to indicate the same power in and out)... the car starts but the glow plug dash light does not come on prior to the engine starting. Immediately after ingnition, the glow plug light goes through the one minute glow plug cycle and turns off. I have a couple of questions. First i am using a 5 cylinder relay on a 4 cylinder engine. Obviously one of the leads to the glow plugs from the relay is not connected. Is this causing the light malfunction? If so, you mentioned mentioned that the relay is wired in parallel... can i eliminate the extra lead from the system and get proper function of the light? Second, and what actually worries me more, are the glow plugs continuing to be heated while the engine is turned on? Usually the dash light would indicate there is a continuation of heating or so variety of fault, but how can i determine that the relay isn't continuing to fire?
My W124 Check Engine light on dashboard disappeared last week....no OBDI light comes on when you press the OBDI button... How to get my check engine light come on with key on before engine start??? Check the light bulb and it was good..
Hi Pierre. My 1979 300 sd starts very nicely even in coldest day, but if I turn it off and wants to restart it while engine still warm, will crank but wont start. It would only start when engine block is cold. Its also seems the battery is being drained somehow. Do you think I still need a glow plug relay? Thanks, Yousef
My glow plug relay fail in such way that it overwhelmed the alternator. When I took the relay apart, it had burnt traces in the board and the whole thing smelled like a short circuit. However, the car started (assuming the battery hadn’t been completely drained) and the light worked normally.
Hi My glow plug light does not turn on. The car starts. Sometimes very quickly some days rough start, is it the relay. I have a rexton 2.7 2005 with mb engine
My 300SDL glow plug light would only come on for a second, but the car would start just fine. I just replaced the glow plug relay and the light is working again. Is it problematic if you start your car without the aid of the glow plugs, or is it just for colder areas? Thanks for the advice.
Thanks for the video! I have a 2008 Sprinter (dodge 3500 chasis, MB 642 engine). Vehicle will just decide it doesnt want to start. All lights come on. Battery is good and new. No crank - just nothing. A little tick, tick, tick, but car wont even crank or turn on. We've noticed when we turn key to second position- no glow plug light illuminates. When we CAN get the car to start - we do see glow plug light indicator, we wait for it to turn off and can turn the engine over just fine. Any ideas? Seems car only WONT start when we dont get glow plug indicator light. Thanks again!

Hello , do you have any leads for 2007 350 bluetec that won’t start no crank and have no glow plug light on dash , only will start if I jump relay on drivers side and glow plugs light comes on and cranks over and runs. Any help be greatly appreciated
Hello Pierre. I own an w203 C class 220 cdi from 2003 and my problem is that glow plug light on dashboard isn't showing up at all. No matter is the engine cold or warm. I've replaced glow plug relay because star diagnose showed relay failure, but it's still the same. Car is able to start normally even if outside temperature is - 7°C But when temperature drops below - 10°C it can't start. Is it possible that some of glow plugs isn't heating enough and because of that there is no glow plug indicator shown when turning key to start ignition?
The car has been parked up for 2 years. Rats eat wires to maf sensor, now repaired wire turn of ignition, and I have two dash lights on. One .the glow plug and two a light symble .and my scan tool no longer shows a connection to the car. Any ideas where to find the problem. Thanks
My Mercedes w203 c220 2007 doesn't crank. Battery okay, steering wheels not locked, ignition and other lights comes on perfectly except the glow light. Glow light won't come on and car won't start. Rather, the radiator fan comes on and runs on a top speed for like at 10 to 15 minutes. I will then turn off the key and restart again, then glow light comes on and car starts. What can be the fault please? In short, car won't crank
@mercedesclassicswithpierre1753 How can I replace/repaire my glow plug relay on a W124 OM602 '91? Can I just replace the capacitors instaed of the whole relay? If yes, how to proceed? Thanks
Hello there, Thank you for the video, I have a problem, the glow plug light comes on after the car has been running for a min, and the cruse control does now not work, I have replaced the wire harness from the computer all the way to the glow plugs and replace the glow plugs and the relay 180 and still the same problem, I have a code reader and the I get P0380 GLOW PLUG HEATER CIRCUIT A, any idea what could be the problem? or what I should try next? or what it could be? Thank you

i have a question, my diesel car overheats when I drive harshly ( high acceleration) especially after it being sat for 3 hours. It does have a white/blue smoke on cold start with the rpm jerking a little. When it's warm the smoke and rpm are fine. What do you think could this be? I already changed all glow plugs but no difference.
The overheating and smoke may not be related. What kind of Mercedes do you have? If the fan clutch working when the car gets hot? How hot does it get? are you losing any coolant?
How do you diagnose the glow plug light problem? They relay seems to be working fine, all plugs work, and the car starts up smoothly. My only issue is the light on the dash is not working. I've changed the bulb 3 times with no avail.
The Pierre Hedary Mercedes-Benz Classic Specialist Hi..I have a 1995 E300 diesel. The glow plug light does not illuminate at all. However, the car starts right up with no problem. Its been two days since problem began. It started perfect at 45 degree F this morning. Thanks for your video.
Hello Pierre, I have a 1998 sprinter D208 van. recently the glow light doesn't come on at all at ignition on but waiting out the usual time the glowing takes and trying to crank the engine starts the engine up just fine. Though at cold starts it does seem to have 1 cylinder not running optimal (a extra noise is coming from the engine which problem disappears after about a minute or so running) The glow light does come on after 30 seconds or so and stays on for about 45 sec. It does this regardless if I have started the engine or not. What could cause this ?? Also where can I find the relay in my van ?

i think the relay is on the inner left fender...the light delay might be trying to tell you that one glow plug is bad. if you have an om602 you might want to check the front glow plug...it always seems to fail first
@@mercedesclassicswithpierre1753 The engine the van has is a OM601D23 type...so a 4 cylinder. What procedure is there to change those plugs and do I need to change them all at once please?
@@mercedesclassicswithpierre1753 I have sprayed the plugs with a penetrating oil and I will not be using the car for a month...after that I will look into which plug is bad (either shorted or just open lead) by testing from the plug on the relay. I can also check there if any internal fuses have gone inside the relay box and if necessary do a external fuse block mod... I just hope I won't break one or more of the plugs...I understand these guys can get stuck and understand the way to loosen (like cutting thread - going back and forth loosening) them. I hope the marinading in penetrating oil will aid in the extraction. I assume the shorter plugs are stronger mechanically...so hopefully I can pull it off. Also I wonder how I will reach the rear two plugs since they are buried in "mucho systems" (manifolds, lines, electric harnesses and the like) which hinder the extraction... Thanks for your answer herr Pierre :-)
you won;t have any issues removing these on a 601 but you will have to pull the intake manifold. MIght as well do them all at once. Don;t do any fuse mods...just change your glow plugs. They usually break off on the 604-606 engines.
Hi , I have an E Class 2.143 Diesel from 2010 . Not all the time the glow plug relay is going on . When is going on the car start when not the car it's not starting :)) . I change 2 glow plug relay's and the symptom it's still there . If the glow plug it's not going on I have to open the bonnet shake a little bit some wires from the glow plug relay and glow plugs press them and after that the car will start . Can you help me please with an idea !!???
Alex, you may want to start by plugging the car into Star Diagnostic system..I know it might be tough to get access but it sounds to me like a broken wiring connector or broken plug might be hiding inside the harness. time to get out the ohm meter and a test light. Also, check your grounds.
Hello again I plug the car to a diagnostic system ( Snap On diagnostic system ) no fault showed. I verified the ground and glow plugs and everything looks fine. Can you tel me please if this can have anything to do with the car key or with the imobilisator ?
My glow plug light wasnt coming on any more so i bought a new glow plug relay, started the car the light was on, turned the car back off and tried it again the light didnt show again do i have a bad connection or one of the glow plugs is bad

The out put on the terminal LA ( glow dash light ) only gives out 10,1V Batteri i fine every thing works .... just not that damn light . What could it be ?
Yes , i did find the fault , it was a burned resistor inside the rele, I soldered the LA terminal on to the glow plug lines, with a fuse in line, so now i can see clear once more :-) It was ether that or new rele .
The glow plug light on the dashboard comes on sometimes when I turn the key, but then other times it simply doesn't light up and of course will not start. A mechanic changed the relay, but had no success? any ideas?

Thanks, Will do. I am trying to locate a woodruff key and crank bolt new or third party, any reference of part#s?
use the dowell pin from the w123 300d if necessary. The EPC called for two units.
hey Pierre, what are your thoughts on the manual glow plug switch conversions done by many?

Hi. Got one question😊
What about no glow light, and no crank. Will this also be a bad relay, or rather a bad ecu?

Hi I have Glow Plug Relay that when key turned on light comes on and off right away. Tested signal from Temp Sensor working if I open relay box and push the relay contract Glow Plug Light comes on and after holing 15 seconds on cold start engine starts perfect. Checked Relay is the 5 wire system to each Glow Plug.
Hi what is the voltage that goes from the relay to the glow plug should it be 12v or 3.6 v
Thank you ! That helped a lot for problem on my 300 diesel 1988...John in Ireland

Sir, I am trying to diagnose glow plug failure on a 6 cylinder SL300, 230 diesel, all 6 glow plugs were showing resistance in access of 300 Ohms , only one was at 3.7ohms, one at 16M ohms! however, when I put 12vold power supply across them from a bench power supply, hardly 1mA flowed through them, then I turned the voltage up on my powersupply to its maximum 35Volts, and something strange happened, within a few seconds the power supply voltage clamped down to approx 4 volts and current limit cut in at 5.5amps and the tips of the plugs started to glow red hot, so I worked out its internal resistance had changed from well over 300 ohms to its normal resistance of 1 ohm, some how all 5 plugs of various resistances got restored to their normal low resistance, how that happened is a mystery for me but i am guessing the heating element must be using some sort of semi-conducting material, hence 4volts clamping voltage at 5.5amp current limit. the 6th plug that showed well over 16 mega ohm did not get restored, so I placed them all back in, hoping the car would start easy now, it somewhat did, but still required a good few turns of cranking, so It was disappointing, T therefore went and bought all 6 new plugs as they were £10 each, replaced them still the car is not starting as it should, still takes long while to start but not as long as before I started to investigate the problem, in fact it would refuse to start at all and had to use starting spray through the air inlets, I checked the electronic relay module, I could get some pulse out of it, I am not sure what voltage these pulse are or weather i can test the plugs with a 12volts car battery where the current would be un- limiting, so do I stand a risk of burning out new plugs but i can try a continuous 12v dc from a car battery on an old plugs that has been revitalized by applying 35volts ,
someone also suggested that there may be a problem with the fuel injectors draining back and so needs more cranking to repressurise and expel any air, though i doubt that is the problem, I think the glow plugs do not come on for long enough and further more they are pulsed, so I am mot sure of these pulsed voltage is full 12v at well over 20amp pulse which may heat them rapidly and so my module may not be switching full power.
Where is the glow plug relay situated on my 2005 s class merecedes Benz
What does it mean if glow plug light comes on again after engine starts?
How about, glow plug light that does not go off after car has started and continously stays on. This has happened on my Land cruiser 79.
Thanks,
Yousef
My glow plug relay fail in such way that it overwhelmed the alternator. When I took the relay apart, it had burnt traces in the board and the whole thing smelled like a short circuit. However, the car started (assuming the battery hadn’t been completely drained) and the light worked normally.
Hi
My glow plug light does not turn on.

Good evening where can i find the glow plugs relay on my lectronic 1kz engine in a toyota hiace bus

Hello there, Thank you for the video, I have a problem, the glow plug light comes on after the car has been running for a min, and the cruse control does now not work, I have replaced the wire harness from the computer all the way to the glow plugs and replace the glow plugs and the relay 180 and still the same problem, I have a code reader and the I get P0380 GLOW PLUG HEATER CIRCUIT A, any idea what could be the problem? or what I should try next? or what it could be? i have a question, my diesel car overheats when I drive harshly ( high acceleration) especially after it being sat for 3 hours.
Well, the signal to turn the light on from the relay is probably no arriving. This is usually a sign of a bad relay.

No glow plug light not coming on ford c max 2016

Alex, I can;t help you. i have zero experience with the w212 e-class. the snap-on scanner won;t give you much information though.
My glow plug light wasnt coming on any more so i bought a new glow plug relay, started the car the light was on, turned the car back off and tried it again the light didnt show again do i have a bad connection or one of the glow plugs is bad

But sometimes after I turn off and go to start the glow plug light won’t come on and I have no ignition so I turn it on and off a fair few times then it will come up and starts .

Can i still ask ?
So i have a new monark rele.
glow plugs are good
the rele dose what it is surpose to , i have only the dash light not comming on .
The out put on the terminal LA ( glow dash light ) only gives out 10,1V
Batteri i fine every thing works .... just not that damn light . What could it be ?
did you replace the bulb ?
Yes , i did find the fault , it was a burned resistor inside the rele, I soldered the LA terminal on to the glow plug lines, with a fuse in line, so now i can see clear once more :-) It was ether that or new rele .
