This is one reason I work on all my cars... I take time to do things the right way. Or take the time to figure things out. With the help of people like Pierre, and others... And for this I'm thankful!

We really appreciate you Mario Caja for viewing our videos and leaving a comment. I tried to read as many as I can and take your responses for consideration on future videos.

Pierre - having dealt with a lot of actual narcissists in my career I can tell you that you are not one. You are very passionate about quality - which is why you are so drawn to classic mercedes. I just purchased another W123 OM617, Manilla Beige - I had one about 25 years ago and have missed it since I sold it. Anyhow I will be restoring it lovingly, starting with injector rebuild, valve adjustment, rebuilding lift pump, new glow plugs, seat repair, fixing rheostat and on and on. I am inspired by your passion for these cars and from that passion comes frustration at times, but so often joy. All the best from West Coast of BC and keep the great content coming.

Fantastic to find a like minded mechanic. Doing this work isn’t easy. Those who claim it’s easy have only done easy work.

Your videos have given me the confidence to become a home mechanic and the last 6 months have been amazing. I now own 2 x diesel mercedes that I love and enjoy the opportunities to get to work on them. My biggest and most common issue has been confidence, a good few times I have got half way into a job, lost my confidence and then backed the entire thing out only to come back later armed with better information and complete the job. Thank you for taking the time to say these things.

This was a great video and great advice from a mechanic's perspective that every classic Mercedes owner should be aware of. I have a 1989 w126 and after I bought it 2 years ago I continued taking it to the same mechanic that had been working on the car since 1993. I have the complete service history on the car and it's physically the same guy (owner) doing the work. It can be complicated as hell to diagnose a problem on the car correctly since there can be multiple different root causes that could be causing a symptom that I as the driver notice and want to get fixed. I have found that taking my car to the person that knows the car well (my specific car + as well as 1980s mercedes) is the fastest and most efficient way to get the repair done correctly and that's why I think Pierre's advice in this video is something that owners should heed (or ignore at their own peril)

“Pick a mechanic who gives a damn.” Well said Pierre! A mechanic’s service should always be the best or nothing.

The old saying that “Too many chef’s spoil the broth” applies in this situation.” I understand why Pierre is so passionate on this point. He’s right.

I know this video does not tackle the subject, but I wanted to ask the question on one of your most recent videos. I have owned and currently own several Mercedes cars (w211, w212, c209, w204, w205). I want to get into a classic, specifically a 450slc. However, I’m thinking I would want to upgrade the engine and transmission, brakes, suspension . I know you are not a fan of engine swaps, but if you had to give a recommendation what would it be. I want to keep it all Mercedes. I was thinking m119 or m113. I’m not looking for huge power but at least above 300. I love the 5.5L in my 2011 e550 (m273), but I fear that engine and transmission combo might rely too heavily on computer controls which will make it too complex to put in an older car. Any advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Also any years of the 450slc that are better than others?

The only time i take my car to someone else is
    1. when i don't have the tools ( eg: hydraulic press or a balancing machine ect: )
    2. i don't have the space at home to do it
    3. it's way too much of a job that it needs someone who's got experience to look at it eg: change the synchros in my manual gearbox

Like many of the others I do much of my own work but I have enough sense to know when a job requires a seasoned pro. My problem is finding a mechanic in my area who is experienced with older Mercedes. Most of those guys have either retired or passed on…

Perry, I have a 1997 Mercedes E320. The transmission works but will not change gears. We had a conductor plate put in the transmission but the problem is still happening. All four wheel sencers have been changed also. Would like to know what is next to get this baby working again… thanks… like to watch your podcast….

@@mercedesclassicswithpierre1753 And you also care for these cars and this is what people dont understand if the person working on your car is not passionate about them why in hell are they doing it ... and why would you want someone working on your mercedes if these mechanics arent experts and have a total understanding of the car I know I dont like to pay people to go in circles Id mutch rather pay Pierre what he deserves like 250.00 and hour To tell me what wrong and fix it and give me a Bill If someone is a master of a dieing art you pay the man !

Best way to build confidence is to buy a cheap project car. If you screw something up it’s not the end of the world. Buying a very broken 190e was the best worst decision i have made
