When they recorded this - the dancers, the band, the camera man - they had no idea it would be immortalized on something called the Internet and viewed by millions of people in the future.
Every single hip hop dance that has since come out has it's roots to this. I know, bc I grew up in the 70s, 80s, and 90s with my great grandma and great uncle who showed this to me.
I was able to take dance lessons on three occasions from Frankie Manning who danced with them as part of Whitey's Lindyhoppers in the 30s and 40s. Al Minns' son and Leon James' granddaugther have even posted comments on some of these vids. Pretty amazing to connect with history and pay it forward.

Pretty much. I mean shuffling isreally only a slight variation on the way ravers danced at the beginning of the 90s (only real difference is the music was slower in 90-92 and there were more arm movements) and that of course was hugely inspired by earlier styles.
12 years after the release, this is still one of my favorite videos! Just love picturing this while listening to dnb music. If those guys cant dance to it, then i wont like the track.
Yes, it was filmed during the 50s (late 50s or maybe early 60s). This was a history of jazz dance TV special where Al Minns and Leon James showcased American jazz dances from the 20s to the 40s. Notice that it is a __TV__ special -- that was not very common in the 40s =) Besides check out the style of their clothes! Peace
All people were treated inhumane. Color of skin has nothing to do with hate. Sometimes people of the same race, culture, and religion treat each other with more hate than the opposite groups.
@AriahProductions (Al Minns' son): your dad was incredibly talented. This style of dancing is so versatile it matches up with almost every musical genre there is. In my video response above, I married it to Jimmy Soul's classic 1962 hit. I hope you don't mind that I took the liberty of re-looping Al's gravity-defying kicks. I just had to have that sequence twice--so damn fine!
There might have been Very Hard Times in The1920's and 1930's, but with footage like this. It looked like a Fun place to be. What Incredible Footage this is, Thanks for this.
A dance that emblematizes a healthy, fit society free to apotheosize: to create, innovate and express individual emotion, especially joi de vivre whimsy--boldly shaping moves ne'er seen b4.
That song is "The Charleston" 1920's Dance and tune that "took the world" in the 1920's ... It actualyl started on the Docks on the Waterfront in Charleston and then was made popular by Beach Goers to the very popular " Isle of Palms" "Flapper dancers" took up the dance ...
Well we watched this video as apart of our notes and I was just like, "If I do learn this dance and perform it in front of the class can I get extra credit points?!?!" And she was like "Absolutely!"
Thanks for chiming in and especially for sharing some of your thoughts and memories of your dad. He and Leon are brilliant and legendary. Such an influence on my dancing and my appreciation for music, dance, and art.
I see a lot of aspects in modern dance in this video (spongebob, gettin lite, voguing, 2 stepping, kid N play). This video just makes me want to dance :D
When they recorded this - the dancers, the band, the camera man - they had no idea it would be immortalized on something called the Internet and viewed by millions of people in the future.
This would be true for everything made the next 60 years.
They knew the internet was coming, idiot

Especially for new jack swing

WOW
"Absatively posolutely." -- e.e. cummings
Yeah, this kind of dancing is timeless. The way new generations shuffle in the clubs or raves, we owe it to these guys.
There's a popular dance inSouth Africa called Isipantsula, it's been around since the 50's. It's taken from this dance

I'd love to see a vid of this dance!

IMO these guys are ABSOLUTE LEGENDS. Beautiful expression.
YES WE LOVE CHARLESTON
I absolutely love this video. I must have seen this a 100 times now
So this must be the forefather of jumpstyle, shuffle, and C-walk? O_o
Jumpstyle doesn't derive from this, shuffle and C-walk do
Pretty much. I mean shuffling isreally only a slight variation on the way ravers danced at the beginning of the 90s (only real difference is the music was slower in 90-92 and there were more arm movements) and that of course was hugely inspired by earlier styles.
Sir you are correct.
I think C-walk and also evolution of Hip Hop dancing and Breakdance
All modern forms of dance upshooting from black dances come from this
this is ORIGINAL dancing as we know it today. rock n roll was born in the 50's, dancing was born in the 20's.
It's impossible to be sad while watching this video.
...no its quite easy
anything is possible.
I'm sad seeing all the comments arguing that this dance only belongs to some Americans when the dancers themselves would never have wanted it that way
@@dogperson432what’s sad is the reality they had to live while contributing so much to the world in joy
12 years after the release, this is still one of my favorite videos! Just love picturing this while listening to dnb music. If those guys cant dance to it, then i wont like the track.
This video will never get old
Ah the 20's! Those were da good old days
at least in dancing...
The Charleston should "come back"! It's so fun!
Awesome and beautiful to watch
Roots of hardstep, shuffle, and some jumpstyle and some drum n bass. THIS IS DANCE WHAT THESE GUYS DID!
This is what both music and dance should be. Brilliant.
The music here is great!
This is where Kid n Play got there moves.....WOW
Boah.. Bull for real..👳🏾
He makes it look so easy. ❤
I know!! It's super hard and requires a lot of stamina and flexibility.
Evolution of Hip Hop dance and music!
All I can say is WOW!!!!!!
We kickin' it old school baby!
cela met de bonne humeur, j'adore !
Beautiful music for dancing in this 2023
Wow. These men are GREAT. They make the dancing look fun and effortless!

Way to keep Al & Leon's legacy alive! =)
Original Break Dancers and New Jack Swing love it
🙋🏻♂️ hello from Sweden 🇸🇪
All killer, no filler. Or finer. A top three clip for sure. Love from the uk.
Better than the Tik Tok "dances" ngl. The leg movements are quite mesmerizing.
If you're wondering why I'm here.... it's school-related.
FABULOUS!!!!!Always go to the great originals!!!!!
Now I know where the original C-walk came from 🤣🤣🤣
Gotta love the oldies 💯
When my son comes home with good grades
The good old times...
Absolutely mesmerizing.
es ist so unbeschreiblich großartig und so modern, egal wie alt es ist
Daamn, these men are smooth!
Good old days music
Your father has some seriously EPIC dance moves. Good stuff.
Amen to that! Took too long to find it, but finally here we are.
when shuffling was unnoticed
Hello Sandra, How are you doing?
That is awesome and amazing! They had sure talent!
Hi there, How are you doing today?
to think this dance is nearly 100years old...
GothixZa And still ever so popular. 😉
@@Sneakyboson definitely! A lot of shuffling to house music and dancing to electro is basically the Charleston.
Many of these steps go back to traditional west African dance Juba and a few others.
they made it look so effortless, yet it must have taken quite a lot of time to master it so well.
It's a shame how these people were treated so badly as they enriched American popular culture.
All people were treated inhumane. Color of skin has nothing to do with hate. Sometimes people of the same race, culture, and religion treat each other with more hate than the opposite groups.
The Godfathers of Hip Hop dance!
I had no idea most of the dances we did in the 80s come from the Charleston! Wow
It's time for this to come back to dancefloors!
These guys are great. I wish I could drop it like that in the club. I don't think I can kick with so much style.

Good to see the mix back in those days.
clearly these dances/dancers were WAAAY ahead of there time
It's amazing how many genres you can dance this to.
it has in a lot of songs.. its distant, but you can see the traces.. its a great dance!
A dance that emblematizes a healthy, fit society free to apotheosize: to create, innovate and express individual emotion, especially joi de vivre whimsy--boldly shaping moves ne'er seen b4.
@Evi1M4chine dude it's so much worse. People do dance it today and they slowed down all the tempos because their fat asses can't keep up
Beautiful!! I love this.
That second dance was amazing
Marvellous!!! Brings back nice memories! Thanks for sharing:)
Grandma mary
Incredibly entertaining; I laugh the whole time🤣🤣🤣I normally see women doing this dance, but this was the first time I saw all men.
We're gonna dance like this again in the 2020's
It's time!
!!!Hermoso, excelente, Fascinante....
So the grandfather of Vogueing is the precision Charleston? Interesting!
this is the origins of locking, the origins of footwork, everything, and this was fun
That song is "The Charleston"

Those guys are awesome!
the second one is totally amazing xD
Well we watched this video as apart of our notes and I was just like, "If I do learn this dance and perform it in front of the class can I get extra credit points?!?!" And she was like "Absolutely!"
Cool sound!!! Music in that times was a perfectly!!!
This is very good!
I MUST LEARN HOW TO MOVE ABOUT LIKE THIS BEFORE I PASS!
Thanks for chiming in and especially for sharing some of your thoughts and memories of your dad. He and Leon are brilliant and legendary. Such an influence on my dancing and my appreciation for music, dance, and art.
*GAWD* Al and Leon were sooooooooo ahead of their time.

Nothing but a classic, wouldn't it be cool if they brought back the dance and it became popular again?
You could argue that jumpstyle is a modern interpretation of the charleston.
or cutting shapes :)
+3eeeDee Thanks for helping me keep up with how it evolves. I had to look this up ua-cam.com/video/O1x9F-DKaNM/v-deo.html
Search "Lindy hop" on UA-cam 😊
brothas doing their thing...much flavor and respect,
superb to watch !!
i am trying jeje is very divertido!! ...magnifica expresión de estos amigos!!
There you have it, folks, the origins of Hip-Hop. Personally, I wish it had stayed this way, much classier, and SOOO smooth.
shut the fuck up
A. BAYAR ... YOU ARE SUCH AN IMP!
I love moves that make the dancer look like they're just gliding a hair above the floor without friction.
This is far better than wachiturros
Love it!!
very fun video. I love this stuff. Much better than most of the stuff out there now. Thank you for posting this.
Learning this dance for extra credit in my social studies class. An idea of my own. = D
the way they dance is kind of really smooth itz awesome =]
WOW! Awesome!
@yojoe1221 Cool, thanks for the extra info there - it's nice to know a bit more about these guys and the awesome dancing!
Beautiful.
