- Another helpful "How-To" video from BusaBob's Garage
This video shows how to install a "tool tube" on a 2008 KLR 650. The tube was purchased on-line from Agri Supply and the cost of the tube was $5.00. This one is about as simple as it gets, and all you need is a dremmel and a couple bits. - Авто та транспорт
Well folks, something went a bit wrong because I had water inside the tube after I rode in a torrential downpour. Not sure if the cap wasn't totally tight of if my silicone hole plug failed. I guess at this point, it's use at your own risk. I will post again if I have more results from testing.
Thanks for the comment. I opened mine recently and I noticed that there was some condensation inside. At this point I am only using it for spare bungees and stuff that won't rust.
Thanks for posting might install one of those.
nice! anyone is still one of these on a pre 2008. the main difference is it's missing one of the bracket type areas to mount the tube to
I just finished with this mod, I didn't have the epa spot for the top bolt so I used metal zip ties around the frame instead, seems very sturdy. Thinking about ordering another but idk where to put it
Thank You very much! I have one of those tubes, and I was wondering where to install it!!!
Cool...I hope it works out for you. Mine is working fantastic!
One more thing. With the L-Bracket and more tire clearance I had to trim my side cover more, and I still have to pull it away from the bike in order to get the cover off. Not ideal but it works.
Im glad i ran into your video here... I have actually been messin around with a very similar setup. This location is imho the perfect place for supplemental tools, tubes, tire irons, and any somewhat smaller replacement parts. I was trying to use the stock charcoal canister holder w/ the little rubber straps to hold a homemade PVC canister without much luck. I think ill scrap the whole OEM holder idea now that ive seen the light! heh...
Anyways, great vid, and nice find on the nice tool tube... +1
Oh, and btw, you having water inside your tube is no big deal imo. Waterproofing shouldnt be an issue i would think. I wonder if one was to replace the original "gasket" with an appropriate sized o-ring if this would help. Just a thought
Good idea on the o-ring, I might give that a try. Good luck on your setup. I will have to get mine dialed in for sure before I ride to Alaska next year. Cheers!
I installed one of these on my 2012 KLR last week. A couple things to note: I didn't have the top threaded bracket so I used an L bracket with some U-bolts to secure it to the frame and get the top of the tube out an inch or so away from the bike. I think there would be tire clearance issues with the cover of the tube the way you show it here. Just my $.02. Mike
Interesting that you needed a bracket. I wonder if Kawi had a special subframe for the California bikes with the charcoal canister. Good to know...thanks!
BusaBob's Racing I am also thinking that the top bracket you have is only on the CA bikes. I have a friend with a 2008 (not a California bike) and he says he has no top (threaded) bracket.
Man that's a great video. I actually tried to purchase the manual canister that you've mentioned however the website says they will not sell to California because it lacks proper labeling. Man this state sucks
Yeah, I bailed three years ago...never turning back!
I ordered 4 of them, 14$ for shipping to California woodwardcrossingscountrybasics.com/product/large-manual-holder/
Any tips on what to store in the tube that would be beneficial in the field? Like for instance what did you put in your tube?
I took my tool kit off the back rack and put it in the tube because I have a Givi bag on the rack that somewhat blocks the access to the tools. I also keep a leatherman tool, paracord and bungees in the tube. For me, it's a supplemental storage for tools and misc stuff that I don't use all the time. I keep my helmet and gloves in the Givi bag. I also just installed RKA soft side bags. I had a set of these bags on my Gen1 KLR and I loved them, so I put a set on my Gen2. Tons of storage, yet relatively light weight. I'm taking it to Alaska next year.
Does this rub against the tire with the rear suspension bottomed out?
march11stoneytony I checked and if you install it like I did it looks like it will clear even if you bottom. The closest thing would be the chain guard.
Purchasing one today. By the way are you the photographer BusaBob that I follow on Motor Sports Photography on G+?
Sorry, not the same guy. Good luck with the tool tube.
any update on this tube? How does it hold up to offroad riding? Any problems with it?
It served me well on a 7200 mile trip to Alaska and back, no issues. I also installed one on another bike and it worked great.
@@busabobsgarage9876 that's great. I ordered a rivet nut gun to install mine to my saddle bag cargo rack. Think it'll look great.
