  • After a crash off road, I bent my stock KLR650 handlebars. The fix? I bought some ProTaper ATV High bend bars and through the stockies in the bin. By all accounts these are the ones to get for your KLR650. Let's see how they go.

    Good video. I went with the KX High Bend Pro Taper with 2” Rox risers. Ends up about 1” taller than stock but a better wrist angle for me.

    The old klr bars bend too😅 Replaced mine with the same pro taper. I've never found a difference in the bar ends off or on. Most of the time you can force air in around the grip to slide them off. Can put the grips on the same.
    Had so many people ask why I didn't get the fat bars...um because you don't need them. The 7/8 work great
    I also cut the ball off the levers. Just leaves more room for hands with barkbusters on.

    I've got the same bars on my bike, along with a set of ROX risers. TW200 :) I also removed the center bar. The bars as is are plenty stout and I just don't like the center bar / pad.

      Man, Your videos about KLR are far the best ones. They are objective and practical showing what KLR is capable of and also KLR weaknesses as we could see in your off road video (handlebar bending in a simple fall)...
      I road street bikes all my life, all of them Cruisers. I finally decided to change to a ADV, but I don't thing the expensive ADV are practical, not for me, I ll freak out dropping a 15 k bike. Your videos changed my mind about KLR, I was almost buying a vStrom, now I am about to buy a KLR. My only concerns are some engineering failures that KLR has, do you know something about this:
      - Duhikkey problems causing worn-out of the engine chain
      - Overheating due burning too much oil ( I read something about the necessity to install a Termo Bob thingy)
      - Instability when on highway speeds, also same guys from termo bob thingy has a solution: Eagle Mike Fork barce.
      Thank you

    • @onthebackwheel
      @onthebackwheel  2 роки тому

      Thanks, glad I could help. Always good to hear I'm on the right track!
      I know all those problems well, I had them all done on my gen 1 KLR. Honestly, I wouldn't worry too much about any of them. If you are buying a new KLR, I wouldn't touch the doohickey until it's well out of warranty. I have no issues with high speed stability either. I think the main things you have to worry about on the KLR is protection and making it adv ready (and that's if you are doing off road stuff).
      The Vstrom is still a good thing, but definitely not as off road orientated!

    so instead of drilling the hole in bar for throttle, you made it tight by beefing up the bar with electrical tape (so throttle disent move). correct?

    and bark-busters are definitely tight
    im considering drilling but dont want too

    • @onthebackwheel

      I actually didn't need to use electrical tape in the end, it's nice and tight already. But yes, electrical tape works a treat. Saves drilling the nice new bars too

    You had mentioned the new bars were swept back more. It seems on my new KLR when standing I need the bars more forward. Wouldn't it be better if the bars weren't swept back? Just curious. I also am interested if you like the performance on your Answer exhaust? Thx.

    • @onthebackwheel
      @onthebackwheel  2 роки тому +4

      First thoughts are, the height is better and I like how they are narrower but the sweep is on too much of an angle back. I've got to ride it some more then I'll give a definitive answer. The exhaust I've got to do more riding with too, so it revs freer but bottom end fueling isn't as clean

      @@onthebackwheel I went with the pro taper evo adventure bars on my klr, seemed less of a sweep back. Really happy with them. I did have to change risers though so a bit bigger of a job to install. Thanks for the videos mate.

    • @ayytayls8800
      @ayytayls8800 2 роки тому +1

      @@exposingthetruth3821 I used RHK universal risers, they are almost exactly the same size as the stock ones. Just allow for the wider bars. No issues on install. And finish height of bars was perfect for me, slightly narrower and similar height to the stock ones. Install was a bit of work having to take off all the farings and that that though.

    • @ayytayls8800
      @ayytayls8800 2 роки тому

      The adventure bars have a thicker section at the bottom where they go in the risers, hence why needed new risers. Not for height change.

    Have you had any issues with your throttle assembly slipping/twisting? I upgraded to ProTaper Adventure bars and ground off the plastic nub like you did (who wants to drill holes in new handlebars?!) I used a rubberized frame protector strip for carbon fiber mountain bikes instead of electrical tape but over time the the bolts on the throttle assembly have lost their ability to squeeze tight against it. I had to “fix” the situation today with zip ties from the cables to the brake lever and mirror assembly. Your advice? Thanks!

    • @onthebackwheel
      @onthebackwheel  Рік тому +1

      I haven't had any issues with that side. The switch gear I had to add a little bit of electrical tape too, now it's perfect. I've found electrical tape to always be good
