  • Taryl was informed about Aspen alkylate fuels so we decided to look more into it and found the results speak for themselves regarding engineered fuel. This stuff burns cleaner and is better for your equipment and it minimizes the user’s exposure to harmful exhaust emissions. Since the oil is biodegradable, it's better for the environment as well. There's only 2 alkylate fuels available on the US market currently with the other being Stihl brand (also used in this video). The difference? Besides being biodegradable and burning cleaner the price tag is also a lot cheaper than the Stihl brand. Just passing along another quality product for storing your equipment long-term or if you want to burn better fuel in your equipment.

Aspen burns clean but (out of experience) it’s bad sitting around in yur carbetrator plus I don’t know but it seems to be inferior in lubrication. The best fuel will in fact always be a compromise. I like lubrication and a working carbutrator so I stopped using Aspen.

In Germany there is regulation that all handheld 2-stroke driven devices have to use clean burning fuel ("Sonderkraftstoff"), e.g. alkylate fuel, in professional environment. The statutory accident insurance (or however you might translate "Unfallskasse") checks if employers respect this. The reason is to protect employee health. It's great for the engines / maintenance too.
Aspen is by far the most popular brand and available basically everywhere. There's ways to order similar fuel cheaper in bulk which many employers make use of.
You can still use whatever for private use of course.

I think all the metal cans look more or less the same and are probably from the same supplier (VP fuel??). The Motomix and Aspen are probably the same. If the foam dissolves it must indeed contains aromatics(explaining the soot). Therefore VP fuel may be purified gasoline without ethanol. Chicanic made a video about some Stihl equipment having trouble to run properly on TruFuel which is also sold in the same metal can. It surprises me that the Husqvarna is probably is also "VP fuel" as I know from the past that they used Husqvarna branded Aspen in Europe. I think "Taryll's synthetic dinosaur juice" would be a nice own brand😆

I think i love you guys. Intelligent, intuitive, bursting with ingenuity, absolutely brilliant! And i dont use that term loosely. And you’re delving into organic chemistry! Aromatics and alkali chemicals, astounding.
I was taught that octane refers to how clean the burn is under compression. So an 87 will leave behind more unburned deposits than 93. Which i’ve heard a gearhead motorcylce mechanic put up a good argument- that in high compression engines that are 11:1 or higher, you will get more performance from a lower octane fuel. Because on the next intake stroke some fuel deposits are still in the combustion chamber.
Was also taught that octane is not a reference or equivalent to the amount of “power” an engine puts out. It only refers to how “clean” the burn is. Which you’ve proven, really isn’t that clean no matter what octane it is. The only element missing in your experiment is compression. Which i have no idea how you could do that. You’d have to run identical engines for long periods and then dismantle them to see the amount of carbon left behind i suppose. Or just pull and check the spark plugs. That would probably work. But i dont think that experiment would really matter. What you guys did was enough prof for me.
Good show ‘ole chaps! Mahalo bruddahs! 🤙🏼

I think the company was founded in the UK but we recently received a case of 2 and 4 stroke engineered fuel from them and i believe it came from the USA. Additionally we were getting the Aspen fuels from our B&S distributor until then had problems with delivery of the product. Have never had an issue with the Aspen brand and the Gulf Pro Fuel has also worked excellent. We will be trying the burn test on the Gulf Pro Fuel to see how it compares to the Aspen. An open burn is a little different than an atomized compressed burn? With the 2 cycle fuels I'd be concerned if I was sacrificing longevity for soot. I have zero experience with the Stihl canned fuel, but for someone running their oil, after it cloggs up the exhaust, (or any 2 stroke oil that cloggs up the exhaust), running Red Armor will clean it.
I love your channel, and have learned so much and got so much entertainment as a bonus, but I am just not sure if this one is here or there. It would be neat to clean the heads of these engines when you have completed stabilizer test, then run some of these fuels through them followed by a tear down to see how the heads look after consuming these fuels. I just watched this I somehow missed it. This brought up some questions so I rewatched your fuel additive experiments many things came flooding into my brain from my years as an auto mechanic and experiences. 1) Fuel from gas stations contains a lot of additives including detergents 2) all fuels with the exception of the Sthil moto mix and the aspen produce a lot of soot and it appears varnish as well in some cases. 3) gasoline loses octane as it sits causing it to be even dirtier. 4) Fuel evaporates while it sits leaving more of the additives behind. 5) in temperature fluctuations condensation forms in tanks and cans adding water to the mix 6) Gas from gas stations could be bad due to bad tanks, water or rust getting in from rain or repairs, and so on. 7) cleaners and additives can strip coatings from parts, many car companies tell you not to use additives in newer cars because of this, especially the newer direct injection engines.
With all of that said I can see why the results were what they were, and why VP did well while the other did worse. I am going to pull some experiments of my own, I read once that you can separate water from gas through Chamois because the chamois absorbs water and lets the gas through. Obviously, it will catch rust and other junk in fuel, but I wonder if it will also absorb ethanol and other additives. If that works it will lead to my next experiment which will be running fuel filtered this way to see if the fuel burns cleaner and more efficiently. Regardless I am going to use my 5-gallon cans just for emergencies (running the generator or big snow storms for the snow blower) and a 1-gallon can for the mower filling that only on an as-needed basis. For my two-cycle items, I will use gas and oil mix (I only use synthetic 2-cycle oil) because I use my leafblower all year but for things like my chainsaw, and weedeater I will empty and store them with aspen in the tanks.
This is where I have a question All my tanks are plastic except the generator so rust in tanks is not an issue in most things. But for the four cycles should I drain them in the off-season completely (all the bowls have drains) and leave them empty and spray the inside of the bowl with WD-40 or would it be better to have just enough Aspen in them to fill the bowls.

At first I thought it wasn't very scientific as fuel on a plate is nothing like fuel in a combustion chamber, but it still showed the difference between fuels quite well and in a fashion that was easy to do and see. Well done.

Sounds nice, but come on...not even sold on Amazon?! Until Amazon or big box R us has it, it might as well not exist. You could do the same flame test with E85 or pure ethanol/methanol, it would burn even cleaner, but that doesn't mean it's good for the engine.

Interesting video. Neat to see what is left after the fuel/oil is burned off. This is the second time I have seen Aspen fuel. The fellow over at the Individualized Repair UA-cam Channel was discussing Aspen fuels when machines were in his shop for fuel related issues. I am going to look for Aspen near me - would like to see what it is like in my 2 stroke equipment.

The prices of these engineered fuels may be a lot more money but prices of carburettors aren't getting cheaper. In the UK I have noticed prices of carburettors go up massively and carb's off Chinese four stroke engines can be around £55 and around £80 on something like a Honda engine. Plus if you factor in the labour its actually cheaper to buy the fuel. Two stroke wise genuine carburettors can be around £45-£60 although there are cheap non genuine ones out there but these can be difficult to get tuned up correctly and don't always work properly.
I have been using the ASPEN 4 stroke fuel in my Dads old John Deere 14sx Pro mower at home and it is using a lot less gas than it was when using the unleaded pump fuel and you don't get the oily unleaded smell you get when using unleaded pump fuel and as the mower isn't used regularly every day we don't have to worry about it being left in the tank.

We use Aspen 2 and 4 at work and I use it at home also. My discovery is the same as yours. Less soot and great use in small engines that sits for months. We got 10% ethanol in our 95 oct in Sweden.

    • @MaxNafeHorsemanship

Considering that the few 2 stroke engines out there are pretty small, I doubt the cost is really that bad. Cheaper than paying someone to clean your carb or buy new parts. Down time and the cost of fuel to drive to a shop to fix it... There is a bigger picture I think. I don't even own a 2 stroke any more, but in the end I think it might be cheaper if it's clean fuel.

    • @GoldSrc_
      @GoldSrc_ 2 роки тому +3

Most fuels are dirty by nature, it's in the name, hydrocarbons. That carbon has to end up somewhere, and we know it as carbon deposits or carbon buildup.
I always remember what Beakman used to say, "everything goes somewhere".
You weren't "ripped off", it's just how things work lol.
Hell, if you really want to feel "ripped off", know that around 80% of the money you spent on fuel gets wasted as heat, and just 20% is used to do work in any internal combustion engine.
This is why you want your engine to be maintained, as efficiency decreases if you don't do maintenance to it, and this means wasting more than 80% of your money.

    • @servihomestead4324

@@GoldSrc_ Beakman's World is awesome! I think I meant I felt ripped off because I expect residue from the 2-stroke fuels but not so much from unmixed gasoline. Hi Taryl, I find your videos informative and entertaining. I am thinking that those fuel additives will produce a different result if burn under pressure and right ratio of air to fuel in an engine. In today's world of snake oils one really wonder if these products are effective.

Over here in Norway, there’s a bunch of different alkylate gas brands, all at about the same prices. I’ve been using them for years. About $14/gallon at the current exchange rate, but it hasn’t gone up in price like regular gas. I do have a cheapo weed whacker that’s oil thirsty, so I I need to add a little more oil to the premix for that one. The good thing is that it isn’t as nasty for varnish in the carb over time. I see some people talking about aspen for an outboard engine - that would be cost prohibitiv. If you want to run an outbord in a more expensive way - just move to Europe and pay our gas prices 😆

Very interesting experiment. I'm just wondering what effects compression has on how the fuels burn vs just burning in atmosphere. As an HVAC tech I know there is a great difference in how combustion efficiencies differ between an atmospheric oil burner (like in a furnace/boiler) vs in an internal combustion engine. Heating oil is just diesel fuel with a few less additives so I'm wondering if there is a similar difference in these engineered fuels? Thanks for all the great content!

Looks promising! However, burning these fuels in this manner isn't that telling. But it is interesting. A flat pool of raw fuel will not get enough oxygen for complete combustion or even close. So, while it can seem compelling to see the difference in how they burn, I'm not sure it will yield miracle results in use, since properly maintained equipment can run trouble free for years on quality fuels that don't contain ethanol. I do have several questions.
What are the products of the combustion process with this?
Do the two stroke versions meet JASO-FD standards?
How do they hold up in long term storage once unsealed? Factory sealed?
    Is it u/v resistant?
How does exposure to air/oxygen affect it?
What do they break down into when they bio degrade?
    What causes the degradation?
Can the 4 stroke version be mixed with 2 cycle oil?
I know, lots of questions, right?

To find out what's in these fuels (or any chemical product) all you have to do is look up the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet). It breaks down the contents, the percentages, the hazards, and precautions of the product.
It's all available on the Interweb!
That's how I found out about sodium percarbonate (Oxiclean) and isopropyl alcohol (dry gas).
