  • In "Junior's Christmas Wish", Taryl goes over this Briggs engine and discovers it has a plastic crankshaft gear. This engine is almost 2 years old so the age old question is asked... Is it warranty??? Will Briggs cover this under warranty? Check it out here for the full story regarding this plastic crankshaft gear and Briggs' approach to handling it.
Before and After the fix, Junior has his eye on a vintage 1970s Polaroid camera Ronnie is selling at his shady booth he wants for Christmas. Once Taryl goes back for it it's gone and the person who bought it doesn't want to part with it. The Christmas spirit is high in this one though as the gang takes you through the story of Junior's Christmas Wish.

A few years ago, I was visiting Statesville Georgia and wanted to visit the Briggs and Stratton corporate world headquarters and was surprised that they only had a small office in an industrial park unless I was mistaken and visited the wrong place. In 1995 I visited a major aviation electronics manufacturer in Kansas City, and they made everything onsite. A few years later I visited the same company only to discover a small office with only sales and a reduced staff of engineering and training center in the USA with everything else offshored to other nations. I think one day the USA will regret depending on other nations for production of essential goods and services.

Plastic parts are the manufacturers best tool for planned obsolescence. Making sure they don't last and not making the replacement parts needed to replace the weak link they intentionally made. From cars to mowers to kitchen gadgets, the old days of taking care of your stuff and having it last a lifetime are over.

How the mighty have fallen. As a small engine mechanic who works on them everyday, I’ve seen their newer engines have more problems than I’ve ever seen in my life. Really stupid problems that could’ve been prevented if some their parts weren’t made out of plastic or just poorly made. I have a lot gripes with Briggs and Stratton recently:
-The newer Nikki carburetors are junk. Almost impossible to rebuild without them running like crap. The older Walbro carburetors were way better.
-plastic carburetors on the push mower engines are a joke. They are much harder to work on and are more expensive to replace. The way they mount to the engine is the biggest joke of all. They are relying on a cheap flimsy piece of bent sheet metal to hold the carburetor firmly against the cylinder head which is pathetic and ridiculous. They bend and break. Stupid dumb retarded design.
-The junk camshafts. The older ones were a cast camshaft that hardly ever had problems. The newer ones have the gears and cam lobes pressed on a steel shaft. It’s ridiculously cheap and appalling that such a design exists. The worst part of all is the dreaded compression releases break ALL THE TIME. It hinges on a tiny hole and is barely held in by anything. It comes off and causes the engine to crank way too hard. All of that could have been avoided if they used a proper cast camshaft like literally every other engine manufacturer.
-The push mower engines. I could go all day on this. The design of these newer OHV push mower engines are cheaply made with the cheapest of materials in the cheapest way possible. The sheet metal plate that holds on the cover is flimsy and the nuts that they pressed in there strip out. They should have been welded in. The plastic carburetor that I previously mentioned are shit. The bent sheet metal mount of the carburetor is a joke. The air filter cover is flimsy and doesn’t hold the air filter very well. In fact, I can move the carburetor and the carburetor mount just by touching the air filter cover. That is ridiculous. The carburetor should be physically bolted to an intake manifold or the cylinder head, I’ve seen it done both ways on other engines. They have plastic gears inside the engine. The camshaft is totally made of plastic, which normally isn’t a big deal for push mowers, after all they were used on the old Quantum engines but they seem to be even cheaper than before. At least the quantum’s had a metal gear around the crankshaft.
-The fill pressure lubrication on the residential engines isn’t all that good. Yes it does work, but the first place the oil pressure goes to is the lower crank seal. Over time the seal goes bad and it might pop out causing a geyser of oil to shoot straight down out of the engine. Also the oil pickup for the oil pump needs to be redesigned. On certain angles, even mild ones, for some reason the engine doesn’t get sufficient oil pressure and it blows up prematurely. It usually happens over a period of time even if you have properly maintained the engine. It doesn’t matter. The Vanguard engines don’t have this problem but the Intek does, especially the single cylinders. The larger ones tend to fail more often the smaller ones.
-the naming and marketing scheme of their engines is an issue. It has come to a point where the consumer has no idea hat the heck they even have. Briggs would slap any label they wanted on their engines, even if it is the same base engine block. Think about it. I’ve had two engines that were identical in every way and one said Intek and the other Professional Series. I hardly see anything professional about those engines whatsoever. The only difference is a better air filter. That’s it. Why not just call it an Intek and be done. And get this. The two engines had different displacements, 500cc and 540cc, and both had the same 19.5 HP rating. The sticker. What the heck I going on? Where are they coming up with these numbers? I’ll tell you where they’re getting their numbers - out their ass. Here’s another one. I’ve seen Briggs Intek v-twins that are the same exact displacement, same carburetors, same everything and they had different horsepower ratings. It’s getting out of hand and it is causing a lot of confusion. It’s hard to know what I even have. Gone are the simpler days of knowing that “I have a 5 HP Briggs”. Sure there are many variants of the engine, but the core is still a 5 HP Briggs.
I used to be a big Briggs and Stratton fan. I still have engines that are over 20-40 years old and still going strong. Meanwhile the newer ones are dropping like flies for really stupid reasons. Yes I know about the problems with ethanol and that does cause some problems but this isn’t about that. It’s about how fricken cheap and crappy their designs have been and how they have fallen in the same way Tecumseh did. Now these no name Chinese engines and Predator engines are coming by storm and to be quite honest, despite me not particularly liking those engines whatsoever, in some ways they are actually built better then the newer Briggs engines. Let that sink in a bit. That’s a rather grim feeling as an old school Briggs and Stratton fan. The Briggs corporation had mostly focused on pleasing their stock holders than actually producing quality products, and it is absolutely shameful. Greed can take everything away from you in a blink of an eye.

which is why the replacement engine for my push mower is a cheap predator engine. got a couple older briggs 3.5 engines, cams have plastic gear and lobes, valves seal, coil fires, flywheel key good, they wont run. all it takes is that gear to move slightly and throw the timing off. why pay $250 for a push mower engine and have them stop a year or 2 down the road when i can pay around $120 for a predator that is still going strong after 2 years?

It was rusted to shit with no deck. It had a 48 in deck. Engine was great with no issues with 370 hours. Big difference with the new JD's for sure. The new filter change cartage is a joke as they expect most owners don't bother to change the other one so the new one doesn't even change the old oil. Crap engine, crap mower, crap long lasting mower. Made in the US means nothing. A knowledge in repair is your only hope. Thank all of the people who can work on a engine to make less landfill.

It's NOT the engineers at fault here, it's the "bean counters" that call for the CHEAPEST parts to be used. I have an 18yr old MTD "Yardman" 46" rider with a 21HP Intek twin. In all those years, I have had ZERO issues with the "Intek". It still has the original plugs, fires up in about 5sec hot or cold, checked valve lash about 5yrs, just minor tweaking needed. I do maintain the machine RELIGIOUSLY, clean it after every mowing job and keep it in a garage when not used. I would guess that MY Intek DOES NOT have plastic gears, since it's going on 20yrs, OR I am just damned lucky. Taryl, I simply LOVE your channel. The scrap from the old crankshaft gets exported to China and is made into 149.8 sintered metal gears for new Briggs & Stratton crankshafts.
I was cleaning up my yard at my century old home and found a wooden gear, curious, then I found what looked like a large lava rock the size of a softball, curious and curiouser. Its a meteor!

I can't believe that ANY company, ANYWHERE; would even wanna try something like that, EVEN AS AN EXPERIMENT!!! SHEESH!!!

I had to laugh, because I can remember when the Mother of one of my 7th Grade school chums, bought him one of those for his birthday, back in the early fall, of 1978!

That all being said, I really liked the camera that my buddy had though, & for awhile, I actually wanted one of my own. 🙂
I never got one, but my buddy DID let me borrow his a time or two, though. In fact, I believe there are a few photos in one of my Mom & Dad's photo albums, which he took of me, whilst I was hanging out at his house. 🙂

    Plastic is supposed to...
    - reduce catastrophic failure
    - reduce collateral damage
    - reduce costs
The idea is, that plastic can be designed to (theoretically) fail as a part prior to other, more expensive to replace parts fail. Further, once the plastic part fails, the concept is that the inevitable loose pieces are made of plastic which is softer than the metal parts and thus will be less likely to cause other parts to be damaged if the engine continues to run or cycle for some period of time after the plastic part fails, but for the failure causes the engine to stop cycling/running.
Unfortunately, I'm not certain anyone outside the industry, would have access to the statistics comparing a) using metal part (e.g. Fewer failures; Failures are more devastating to engine) and b) using plastic parts (e.g. more failures; Failures less damaging to overall life of engine).
It is nice to hear that at least some of the manufacturers designs still allow for metal replacement parts for the plastic versions, but then again, is plastic worth it in the first place or are they just trying to cut down on manufacturing costs and end up getting more repeat customers as people see little value in repairing something with just another plastic part that will end up costing them more and more down the line.

For most consumer grade stuff, even the plastic gear failing is enough to send it to the junk pile if out of warranty. A good mower tech's time to open it up and work on it will exceed the replacement cost, so it might as well have been a full self destruct as it's going to the landfill anyway.

    • @danburch9989
      @danburch9989 2 роки тому

I don't know if these engines are of the interference design, but if so, that gear failing at the right time with one of the valves open will cause catastrophic failure when the piston crashes into the valve. Yes, it reduces costs - to the manufacturer but not to the consumer. Saving $10 over 100,000 units is $1,000,000 savings to the manufacturer. It's referred to as "economy of scale". The consumer doesn't even see the $10 savings.

@@danburch9989They literally don't have enough valve lift to be an interference engine.

One thing I check, is to make SURE the shear key slot for the flywheel is exactly the same angle in reference to the rod throw journal as the old crank. This is crucial to the ignition timing of the engine. The engine started right up, so it was the same.

I use the Briggs "Power Portal" to request warranty replacement of parts for LP Standby generators.
I find it a pain in the U know what.
Some of their "engineering" is pretty shoddy.
Some failed parts are due to poor design.
The superseded part then costs plenty, even though they know the original was poor.

It's funny what you said about people still bringing you lawn mowers and tractors. Here on the East Coast by now I would have three or four blowers dropped off so far nobody is thinking about snow. If it's anything like last year and the year before that nobody will even need a snowblower again.
I still cannot get over that plastic gear. As you know that's where all the torque comes from that moves the piston up and down. It cannot be worth the few dollars that they saved. Their warranty claims and just the fact that people will turn away from the brand should be enough to put quality parts in their engines.
I hope you and your family and friends all have a great holiday and I look forward to seeing your new videos.

Probably because purchasing pressures them on cost savings and senior management supports that effort. Remember, a lot of companies are ran by bean counters these days. They have no clue about engineering and could care less what engineering thinks.

Plastic is cheaper to make. So if they save a few cents a motor X thousands of units = $$$. Plus it’s a calculated risk. How many will fail under warranty vs how many fail after. Then they also get to sell parts and double dip.
