      Ethanol is not the villian you think it is. Its phase seperation is 26 times more rapid than ethanol free fuel, meaning the water present in the tank will seperate earlier.
      Ethanol also doesnt create varnish, that is the petrol/gasoline. If anything ethanol would crystalize, not the aluminium/copper corosion green and white.

    Taryl , I'm betting the rubber seals in the sealed jars have cracked from exposure to the gas fumes and temp changes over the past 18 months.

    • @ricksanchez3176
      @ricksanchez3176 3 роки тому +1

      Mason jar lids function like a relief valve so the jar doesn't blow up while pressure canning. All say "don't over tighten", if you do over tighten them, 9/10 they will kink and still let pressure out anyhow. Once you get a little air space, even though it will compress, when the liquid fuel will barely, the gaseous fuel will expand and contract more under changing temperatures. When it starts getting warm enough to over pressure, it's litterally pumping out of the jar. Expanding in the heat of the day then making a vacuum at night and "boiling" the liquid fuel to push out the next day.
      Seals could have degraded too, they had to change their seal material a few years back to remove BPA from the mix. A buddy's wife is a chemist for a big bottle company, I guess she was stressed for months at the time, not sure if the new are oil resistant.

      @@davidvickers8425 On a somewhat related note, I just started a car that's been sitting in my Dad's driveway fully exposed to Chicago summer and winter weather for a long time, and is almost never used. Found a gasoline receipt for 17 gallons that is dated July of 2016, and the car has only gone 34 miles in almost five years (dad always wrote mileage on gas receipts to track MPG). I did use a bit of carb cleaner to start the engine, but it ran on that 57 month old fuel just fine, and I drove the car around the neighborhood with no issues. My guess is some of these engines will continue starting for many more months, if not years.

    I just joined this channel a few days ago and I was all about his videos... very informative on many areas with small engines BUT.... I was scratching my head when I saw an older video about how to store your small engine equipment when he mentioned the higher the octane the gas, the better it is for your small engine.... its really just the opposite:
    The higher octane of premium gas won't make your car faster; in fact, the opposite is possible because higher-octane fuel technically has less energy than lower-octane fuel. It's the fuel's ability to be compressed more without pre-igniting that results in more power when used in the appropriate engine.
    When this new video just got posted I'm like... " a guy with 40+ years in small engine experience had a brain fart and realizes now that premium gas isn't necessarily great for low compression Briggs, etc engines? "
    But I dont want to seem like I'm splitting hairs.. cuz Taryl does a great job explaining so much. I was just amazed he was bamboozled with 94 octane ethanol based gasoline that has been around since 2002.. BUT, I admire his honesty that he was misinformed.

    My theory is (and always has been) it comes down to the design and build quality of the engine and fuel system. The 2 that failed probably were sealed the worst and allowed more moisture into the float bowl.

      Why is everyone fixated on octane? Octane is only important to stop knock / pinging. 87 is actually more volatile and therefore easier to burn. I have customers always telling me “I put nothing but super in my equipment” Unless the manufacturer requires it, you are wasting your $$$.

    • @bentullett6068
      @bentullett6068 3 роки тому

      In the UK 93 octane fuel is the standard unleaded fuel they sell at the pumps and the super unleaded is usually at 95-99 octane levels. The non starting issues we get are literally every year on equipment that is just over 1 years old. Plus our fuel has to travel from the overseas refinery's before being transported to the gas station's.

    If you ever want to smell old gas, go to an antique farm engine show! I have such an engine, it is nearly 100 years old, and is called a flywheel engine. They don't even have a carpettrator, they are called "mixing valves". For us that have old rancid gas, these engines will run on it, but the odor; well, that's another thing! I suspect though, that these newer fuels will rust the mixing valves too.

    Great job on this whole experiment Taryl.... Very nice....
    So it has taken some patience, but there's a result. The jelly blobs, in the carb......
    So we know these were in controlled conditions... Not outside, no tampering, well established time intervals.... To me, it feels like, the temperature and humidity cycles, caused some condensation in the tank.... And, the ethanol, didn't do it any good either... So you end up with jelly....
    Probably ALL of them have some degree of jelly in those float bowls.... Although I'd be very curious to see, if there was 1 or 2 that were spotless....

    I would be interested in seeing the inside of the bowl of the one that started on the first pull.

    O great one with the Coalgate smile, I can only say that I have used the Sta-Bil products 30 + years the red stuff and then the Marine Sta-Bil & 360 in 10% gas year round with never a problem in everything from the snowblowers,mowers to the muscle cars. But I never let it go more than 6 months without siphoning out the old and filling with fresh, running the older gas thru the garden tractor.Even checked carb bowls on 20+ mowers and snowblowers and had no corrosion. So there's your dinner.

    Check the gas cans to see if the fuel is similar to the fuel in the carb bowl that is gummed up.

    I don't know about the VP fuel but the Stihl fuel is mostly naphtha according to the SDS. I worked at an auto parts store and the brand we sold was mostly paint thinner. Unless you have the jar rings really tight they might not seal. Mason jars are made to vent pressure out and form a vacuum when you are canning with them.

    Next time give pri-g a try not found in stores its a industrial one we use it in boats and It will even rejuvenate old fuel somewhat. Google it not hardly any bad comments on it. Like you Ive been mechanic 42 years and shop owner too. Best stuff Ive ever seen ever!

    I've been buying Sunoco standard race fuel 110 octane. After sitting my generator for 2-3 years it started on the third pull. But the problem I was using AV gas in everything and it's thinner and has something in it that will mess up the rubber parts sadly.

    That's right temperature does have something to do with it higher the octane it requires more heat and compression to ignite.

    As the water sinks to the bottom and combines with alkey-hall we get jelly. I love this stuff, makes me lots of $$$$

    The 93 octane fuel is what we use in the UK as standard unleaded fuel. No wonder we see so many starting issues with garden machinery and small engine equipment.

    The aluminum reacts with the ethanol in the fuel. That is where the jelly comes from, from the chemical reaction between the two.

  • @paulhogan2389

    The first engine did sound tinny like the oct is low.. so the lower the oct it takes less heat and compression to ignite.

    Things to consider.. all raw gas is the same.. depending major oil companies add the own additives as I remember some companies use petroxs whatever.. some used techron generally your off-brand filling stations don't use any extra additives.
