I worked as a maintenance man at a stamping plant. I would get called over to fix a broken machine. My first question to the operator would be. What were you doing just before it stopped running. 90 percent of the time the problem was what they had done.
It would be good if you could do a video on a Tuff Torq K58 like you have done with the K46. I had mine all laid out in my office room and my wife moved the oil charge pump cover and I dug and dug all over the internet to try to find a pic of correct orientation. I finally found it down loading a service manual from a cub cadet. It’s actually on my John Deere X320. Tuff torque and every parts website didn’t have that info. TT website didn’t have any exploded views of that transaxle! I got it figured out, but this knowledge might be good for the rest of the peeps!😂
Hi, On question #3. It is very rare but i have found that a spark plug when it gets hot can open up internally and therefore not supply spark to spark at the plug. Your in line spark detector will show that your have good spark from your coil but the problem can actually be a defective spark plug. I had one that would run for about 10 minutes and then cut off. The coil was fine, the spark detector showed good spark and it turned out to be a defective spark plug that internally opened up "when it got hot" and kept the spark plug from firing. Last resort change the spark plug. Just something to keep in mind. John
@@dartvader9939 COOL! I have always wondered what was inside of a spark plug. I am sure there is a picture somewhere on the internet that shows a cut away view.. I will do a little technical digging. My question for the next instalment of 'Ali Blah Blah' is this [and it's a good one!] - battery powered garden equipment is now the rage. But, does Taryl believe that this equipment is likely to be economic to service when it fails to operate, or will it end up being junked? Slippers and Ali Blah Blah! Love it!
Good question. Remember really old fans and hand drills and the like. They had oilers and replaceable bushings stuff like that. I wonder if even the better brands of power tools will be built with replaceable parts and made repairable. The weed eaters I've had you're better off wrapping it around a clothes pole and buying another one.
I called the electric chain saw co on my 80v brushless saw. They told me I could not buy parts! Now if a guy bought a few new E saws and parted them out. I think there would be a demand & money in that. Brushless motors & lithium ion batteries are the future! When brushless motors came out, all electric rc boat records more than doubled from 50 miles an hour to 140 miles an hour!
People will keep swapping out batteries as they try to finish the job...plastic parts warp and electric motor or some rotating part seizes...tool gets thrown to ground or wrapped around a tree. Then its off to buy a replacement and repeat. A lot of people shouldn't own any kind of tool...hire a pro to do the work.

I believe one of the most destructive things you can do to any small engine it to shut it down at full speed under load. Without the engine running there is NO cooling air passing over the engine cooling fins dissipating the heat from the cylinder wall and cylinder head. Letting the engine idle at low speed for a couple minutes before shutting it off really helps cools it off and greatly extends engine life.
Trying to fix a mower over the phone is like trying to give a haircut over the phone, it just doesn't work. At least that's what I tell everyone who calls and asks me to diagnose their mower over the phone. Never overlook the basics: Fuel, compression and sufficient spark at the correct time. Love the Q&A vids. Keep up the good work.
The backfiring is also because people shut the tractor down while on high RPMs and after running engine hard. Idle the engine down low as possible and let it run a second,,then shut it off. And I see taryl just said that!! lol
I always go through a "cool down exercise" with my riding mower. After running for a hour in 90 degree heat, I let the engine idle for 5 minutes. I learned it from a old man that rebuilt Volkswagen engines. Heat Kills!

9:55 Also the air gap on the flywheel changes as it gets hot. Coil needs to be adjusted away from the flywheel more. Maybe do 12 thous and see if that helps. If so try 15 thous.
One of the best things I did was getting a carburetor adjustment tool kit off of eBay for Weed Sniffer engines etc..., these little engines are set to run VERY lean at the factory, so adjusting a “non-adjustable” carburetor has solved many a running and starting problem for me along with using Startron fuel enzyme in the gasoline. One more thing I learned from Taryl was that If it doesn't want to start when hot to check the head bolts. It might be sucking just a little bit of air. When it's cold like he said everything is compressed but when it heats up everything expands and you'll know if a head bolt is a little loose because a head bolt will be darker than the rest. Retorquing those bolts takes care of the vacuum leak when it's hot at the bolt sight. Of course you want to check the gasket if this is the case and you'll probably have a slight searching when it's hot also because of the vacuum leak. Wish I could find the video he posted on that. But If it's reving a little when hot and doesn't want to start hot, this could be an issue also. Might have a small vacuum leak from a head bolt. I always check for a discolored head bolt now also. Here are my questions for Volume 5: I change my residential lawn mower oil once a year is it better to do it just before winter storage or before the first mowing of spring? Is Briggs & Stratton brand motor oil better than regular automotive oil and is synthetic oil worth it for a mower used 25 hours a year?
Taryl Fixes All. Some time ago, I purchased a Jonsered GTS -2228 straight shaft trimmer from a TSC store in which I purchased the no question(s) asked extended warranty. The trimmer ran as it should for about a year until it started leaking 50:1 fuel profusely. So I went to the TSC where the trimmer was purchased and told the associate about my issue with the trimmer. I was referred to the person in charge who upon hearing that I had an issue in a very smug manner stuck a pamphlet in my face and was told to call the insurance company that TSC does not deal with warranty repair issues. Also just before the Jonsered purchase,I purchased a Cub Cadet ST-100 wheeled string trimmer that the deflector shield had a rivet/bolt that had pulled through. I was told that I had to file the claim and that the insurance company “May” reimburse the cost of a new replacement deflector shield. In other words, I would have to order and purchase my own repair parts and then notify the insurance company and if they deemed the cost of the parts worthy - I again “May” be reimbursed for the repair - What A Crock!!!. After those two instances I said “Never Again” to buying power equipment from TSC or any big box type stores and their “So Called Extended Warranties”. Please take Taryl’s advice and stick with the servicing dealer. Remember, You Usually Get What You Pay For; But Not Always.
Rubén. I tried one other time to get something done regarding the warranty, And again I met with a person acting like that they had never sold that brand of string trimmers believe it or not. So it was very evident that the so called extended warranty was totally baseless. So one day, I totally dissected the trimmer and did not find any broken fuel lines or busted fuel tank or really anything blatant that would stick out as a cause of the issue. Upon not finding a quick solution, I carefully bagged up all of the small parts including all of the screws, the engine casing and trimmer shaft to play around with after I retire in a few days. I thought that was best to wait before working on the trimmer again to get the hate and discontent out of my system. At least the vast majority of screws use a T27 torx bit.
@@gregorymalchuk272Thinking Back, All of fuel lines were absolutely pouring fuel in that it was a dangerous proposition just to start up the engine. I never did get any help in any way from TSC. Later on, I disassembled the trimmer just to see what exactly was going on. Actually I still have the trimmer parts that I wrapped up in the plastic grocery bags and such and I never could understand why the trimmer that was still that new could have such a serious failure with the fuel line. I will say that this trimmer which was branded Jonsered was Husqvarna even with a branded Husqvarna spark plug. The fuel line that Husqvarna used was of very low quality to split like that. If the trimmer was used and well used, I could accept that fact, But not a brand new trimmer. It’s no wonder that so many people have started buying the battery powered tools and yard equipment. Much Less Hassle.
Hey Taryl, Not sure if you did this one yet but you should do one on a 2 stroker not revving up only bogging. Just because I’ve seen this problem a lot in my shop and it’s different stuff every time it seems.
Vapor lock is definitely a thing. 30 year old Hustler 275 started to die when hot. Had Me and the shop baffled for a long time. Finally one day after stopping I just stood there looking at the motor, noticed how close the fuel line ran to the muffler. A few wraps with a strip of beercan aluminum fixed it.
With helping someone over the phone, I have in the past, but the person your talking to has to have a tool, engine repair background, for anything I say to make sense, other then that, I tell the person to bring it to me, and I'll fix it...... Great Q&A.
Backfire is my Chipper's middle name. Old DR C18CHP with the 18hp Briggs opposed twin. Start it up, it runs full speed and when you shut down from full speed it always pops..sometime I think it's going to blow that $100+ muffler. I wonder if I could add a throttle control...and a key ignition switch for safety. The later models with the 19hp v-twin motors had all that.
also if you turn the ign. back on as the shut down engine is still coasting down the engine might pop because the spark making devices on most those engines fire the plug at the end of the exhaust stroke/beginning of intake stroke as well as at the desired time of the end of the compression stroke.
Hey Taryl! We need to see a video on that mini bike that is sitting behind Slippers. Can hardly see it in this video except glimpses of orange. Excellent q&a video however! 👍
You are the GREAT KRESKIN TARYL DACTAL GRAND WIZARD. Thanks so much for keeping us all extra informed. All I can say is their will be a little extra in your check this week, just keep that between us and no one else. Thanks, VF
last year i got a stihl msa 120 battery chainsaw to go with my other stihl saws. it cuts as good or better than some gas saws i've had over the years. bonus, no pull start rope to make my old, worn out shoulder cry. i'd definitely recommend one if you can pony up the dough. she's a bit salty at around $350-400, but a new stihl ain't cheap no matter what yer buyin'. i'm a modern multitasker too. i can surf the innertubes in my garage, since i gots one o' them 43" samsung smart tv's with the wifi on clearance at wally world fer $120. it was the model year change, and mine was a display model. it was turned on 24/7 fer a whole year, but it still works good. so i can work, and watch the youtube, well listen to it anyway, at the same time. sure beats the old shop radio i had before. i still ain't got my jetson's flyin' belt i was promised as a kid, but i guess we're gettin' a little closer.
Haha...all so true.....another thing is, gas doesn't last as long as it used to, and the alcohol content......which absorbs moisture.....have had several units in with bad gas, or water in the fuel....
Our local Echo Service center refused to do any service work. The fellow in charge said they would only do "Warranty Work" on covered equipment. I wanted a new power head put on a unit that I had bought there a couple of years earlier. Needless to say I've never purchase any more units from them.
Keeping it clean . I want to add a deck washer to my 42 inch mower deck, are they worth the trouble to install and if so is it better to have one on each side of the deck
The fire triangle is fuel, air, source of ignition..... Now, if the ignition is happening at the wrong TIME, then you have no ignition..... Also, I have seen weak batteries crap out, when they get hot.... when they cool off again, they act like everything is fine..... That would be more like a no crank scenario though.... I think Slippers was probably asking about a hot crank no start.... Great job as always... those are just very minor nitpicks.....
Great thanks taryl I really am enjoying this I will hopefully make You a special present I will mail it to you soon ok I really can’t thank you enough taryl your a great guy and an awesome small engine guy and junior is a great guy too thanks to all of you I wouldn’t have ever worked on lawn mower you inspired me to find old junk lawn and garden tractors thanks I owe everything to you and my gift is something I think is cool and useful too

While bowing to Taryl the Great, in a soft whimpering voice caused by the awe of his presence, the Greenkeeper says gasoline is still king by a mile and will be for a very long time, and, as you grimace at me, I turn and run like hell.
He also never mentioned loos head bolts when talking about loosing compression on question 3. I had 1 12.5 hp briggs flathead a month ago. Complaint was that it would no restart after it was shut off and it was loosing power while running. I checked the compression. It had 80lbs cold but dropped to 25lbs hot. He said another shop put new valves in it last winter. I took the valve cover off the side of the engine to check the clearance. It was on the money. So I started to take the head off to check the bore and valve seats. And noticed the head bolts were very loose. So I just tighten the head and run it. Compression was 90psi cold and 120psi hot and it refired fine 3 or 4 times. So I replaced the head gasket and no problems for just over a month now. I changed oil in it today. (New customer coming back from big shop down the street). This 13 year old Kid and his sister mows about 15 lawns around here. Well 16 now he mows 2 of my 3 lots for his blades sharpened. And oil changes and new air filters every month on his old Dixon 0-turn, lawn tractor, and a push mower. He also failed to mention fuel filter not letting fuel flow good. I've saw that. The fuel filter not 100% plugged but still restricting the flow just enough. Or even a paper fuel filter designed for a fuel pump being used in a gravity flow application.
Is the kid's Dixon the old kind with the friction cones rather than hydro. I kinda want one of those. I saw one for sale for $250 a few weeks back, but I have too many old lawn mowers already so I have a strict nothing over $25 policy.
Taryl...thanks for your question an answer session. I have a question. I purchased a brand new Sthl hand held blower; weeks later I started having start issue. I noticed bulb primer wasn't full of gas and depressing it several times had no affect in starting back up. The blower was running well until I shut it off and when I wanted to use again within a short period of time this issue repeats itself. What is your thought...Thx, Brooks
I work at a tractor supply here in my home town and we just got 2 types of ridding mowers in they take 6 batteries and comes with 3 chargers. Green works pro
Idle the engine down before shutting it off and wait 10 seconds that will reduce the amount of backfiring when shutting it off, of course as soon as I commented they said the exact same thing right after.
Now, there's your dinner, er, there ya go. You can see that Taryl is an honest dude. Here he is recommending battery powered stuff knowing full well that it could cost him repair business. Some more unscrupulous type would say something like, "Don't buy that battery powered stuff, it won't do the job and they're junk" because he wants you to buy something with a gas powered engine, preferably from him.

OR you can slow the engine down to idle for a minute before shut down. That also avoids back fire because it won’t be running so fast to pull fuel though into the muffler. My 1986 simplicity will back fire if I shut down the engine wide open but won’t if idled down
Looking at the turbin Tar is wearing makes me think you need to change the Q and A format to what Johnny Carson would do. Slippers reads the answer and Tar askes the question, or Tar holds an envelope up to his head, gives the answer, and then opens the envelope and reads the question.
even cordless bench saws exist now, for around the house i have electric chainsaws and weedeaters theyre easily as powerful, and i have two and fourstroke tools for out in the woods.

I have a question about spindles. I haven't found a video that addressed this ... exactly. I recently purchased a 1992 MTD 18/46 and need wheel bearings, all the online stores I found didn't carry those parts. I was thinking of getting John Deere spindles then putting bearing upgrade and rims. I saw your video about the upgrade on a John Deere. How compatible are Deere parts with MTD? Deere parts seem to be easier to find. Any other ideas? I am a landscape contractor in California and do most of my own repair work. Thanks

I use the acronym “FACTS”, as in “check the facts”. Fuel, Air, Compression, Timing, and Spark. Pretty cool eh? 👍
You are not the first one to use it, but probably a thousandth one to pretend that you are smart and you came up with it.

ltbigdog......down to idle speed
for couple mins before switching off, helps cool engine down as well

Carbon build up because it was running rich or has really high hours I guess.

@@TheIronDuke502 Did you ever find out what was wrong with your trimmer?
Hey Taryl,
Not sure if you did this one yet but you should do one on a 2 stroker not revving up only bogging. Just because I’ve seen this problem a lot in my shop and it’s different stuff every time it seems.
I have a question: Is it possible to swap the power steering system from a John Deere X370 into a Deere e130?
you are great thanks for all you explanations, make it easy for all of us.
Love the information! Great video. Thanks. Also love the Pachinko machine and the recoil!! Had both of those growing up!!
when doing a compression test, does the fuel line need to be disconnected, and the throttle wide open?
Good one.Have to love these people who watch u tube Vids and think they are now Mechanics .
The all wise and powerful....love it!!!............Tell us the meaning of life!!!!!!
Genius. I learn something on every video. In uncertain times, at least a man can count on mowing the grass.
AND YES the ALMIGHTY TARYL!
Hey Taryl! We need to see a video on that mini bike that is sitting behind Slippers. Can hardly see it in this video except glimpses of orange. Excellent q&a video however! 👍
Yeah it looks like a couple bikes in his house, must be single....
Lots good info !!
Whats the mini bike in back ground ? tell us about that

You are the GREAT KRESKIN TARYL DACTAL GRAND WIZARD. Thanks so much for keeping us all extra informed. All I can say is their will be a little extra in your check this week, just keep that between us and no one else. Thanks, VF
Hey Taryl, great answer on buying battry equipment, but aren't you worried about losing business with less carbitrator or muffkin problems out there?
Love the pachinko machines in the back.
Hi, I’m Laryl, this is my brother Taryl and my other brother Taryl.
You got to be at least 40 to get that joke. Haha
What about Faryl lol
last year i got a stihl msa 120 battery chainsaw to go with my other stihl saws. it cuts as good or better than some gas saws i've had over the years. bonus, no pull start rope to make my old, worn out shoulder cry. i'd definitely recommend one if you can pony up the dough. she's a bit salty at around $350-400, but a new stihl ain't cheap no matter what yer buyin'. i'm a modern multitasker too. i can surf the innertubes in my garage, since i gots one o' them 43" samsung smart tv's with the wifi on clearance at wally world fer $120. it was the model year change, and mine was a display model. it was turned on 24/7 fer a whole year, but it still works good. so i can work, and watch the youtube, well listen to it anyway, at the same time. sure beats the old shop radio i had before. i still ain't got my jetson's flyin' belt i was promised as a kid, but i guess we're gettin' a little closer.
Time for a stihl.
Keeping it clean . I want to add a deck washer to my 42 inch mower deck, are they worth the trouble to install and if so is it better to have one on each side of the deck
Hey Taryl, and ideas how to adjust a governor on a John Deere Krohler engine.
Great thanks taryl I really am enjoying this I will hopefully make
You a special present I will mail it to you soon ok I really can’t thank you enough taryl your a great guy and an awesome small engine guy and junior is a great guy too thanks to all of you I wouldn’t have ever worked on lawn mower you inspired me to find old junk lawn and garden tractors thanks I owe everything to you and my gift is something I think is cool and useful too
Yes I know what you mean about battery equipment it is getting better, the Ego 2020 lawnmowers are very good
EXCELLENT video! Chock full of great info! Thanks Almighty Taryl & co.! 🍺🍺
Your videos are great, so fun! Slippers is hilarious, particularly when he's being all cool and says Hey S man here, sup? lol Best of wishes to all. :)
Isn't it July in Podunk? Why are you guys wearing flannel, hoodies, and long sleeves?
Changing the pully on cranck shaft to make riding mower go faster hard on the transmission (geared or hydro)
I was quite impressed when I saw a battery 51/4 inch skillsaw! totally amazing.
i'm cleaning my mower deck what can i use to paint the under side of the deck ?
What's the worst injury you've sustained working on small engines and what did you do to prevent it ever happening again
How about air leaks on 2 cycle engine cause a hard start or no start condition.
Crank seals
Carb to cylinder air leak is common problem...too much air in the wrong place.
You are right about the battery stuff. Even then buy quality. The Lawn mower doctor. Hemostat ----STAT.
I work at a tractor supply here in my home town and we just got 2 types of ridding mowers in they take 6 batteries and comes with 3 chargers. Green works pro
Question no.3 I get this problem often with two cycles Lawn Boys, usually during the heatwaves 100+ days
Brilliant video thank you 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😀
QUESTION: Why does my mower run ok at idle but it bogs down when opening the throttle too fast.
BONUS QUESTION: What is the difference between a Tecumseh TVM-220 and VM-100. Which one is better?
Probably to lean or rich. If it’s not getting the right fuel it won’t throttle up.
Hey Taryl, would you be intrested in another one of those pinball machines? I have one down here in madison county 765. Get back to me if you do. We will work something out. Its 90 percent there i think. Incuding the ashtray.pretty neat.
BACKFIRE!! We called it ( the brown seat syndrome) After shutdown about 3 steps away from equipment POW!!!
Good morning - Video request - Please make a video tutorial showing how to repair a JohnDeere riding mower cable harness. Included the source & part numbers for replacement connectors, Pins wire gage & ratings & exact tools( Crimper )
OR you can slow the engine down to idle for a minute before shut down. That also avoids back fire because it won’t be running so fast to pull fuel though into the muffler. My 1986 simplicity will back fire if I shut down the engine wide open but won’t if idled down
When the pistons stop pissing and the muffler stops muffing it's time to go and see Taryl.
pist up muff job?
Yall are grrreat!!! Much love and respect
Looking at the turbin Tar is wearing makes me think you need to change the Q and A format to what Johnny Carson would do. Slippers reads the answer and Tar askes the question, or Tar holds an envelope up to his head, gives the answer, and then opens the envelope and reads the question.
Great Carnac was the one on Carson.
Oh Great Exalted Swammi, Once again you have bestowed much wisdom upon your loyal subjects! Slippers, Camera Man, Sound Effects man...good job too!
even cordless bench saws exist now, for around the house i have electric chainsaws and weedeaters theyre easily as powerful, and i have two and fourstroke tools for out in the woods.
I have a question? How do manufacturers generate horsepower rating? I see a lot of engines with the same specs as far as carburetor and CI (cubic inch) but one will be 20hp and the other 22 or 23hp.
Can you do a video on GTX 2154 hex bushing? for the rock shaft?
Is there a big market for the antique machines? Or the collector market?
I have a question about spindles. I haven't found a video that addressed this ... exactly. I recently purchased a 1992 MTD 18/46 and need wheel bearings, all the online stores I found didn't carry those parts. I was thinking of getting John Deere spindles then putting bearing upgrade and rims. I saw your video about the upgrade on a John Deere. How compatible are Deere parts with MTD? Deere parts seem to be easier to find. Any other ideas? I am a landscape contractor in California and do most of my own repair work. Thanks
