Thought these little old school outboards were suppose to be fun and simple to work on. That one looks like a PITA. I was about to buy one. Glad I watched you vid first!

yeah, you want anything but a 9.5HP.
      Look for a 6HP, a 9.9, 15 HP.... 5.5... anything but a 9.5.
They do have some power to them though; and a low profile for fishing.

I have a 4 hp Johnson Deluxe, that I bought from Facebook. The motor must have over heated, as the black coating on the coils and magneto have leaked some It has been converted to electronic ignition, no points, so no spark and the top cylinder has 100 pounds compression the bottom has 60 pounds compression. So I think it would cost to much to fix it in parts. I have been looking for a parts motor no luck. I was thinking of doing a DIY lawn mower motor and it would still have forward and reverse.

It’s running as it should ! I missed out on a deal for 20 different test props for $5 each , I thought about it to long ! Dang it ! Lol. Oh well the ones I have will have to do ! Richard White makes the coil alignment rings and they are great ! He also makes the rebuild jig for pressure tank fittings ! Just picked up a running QD-19 and tank with a mint badge and brass prop for $150 ! SCORE !

I really need more test props, but, Ill get them eventually.
I need some high speed brass props for my 6!
Who was making the rings previously, JT or something I believe? I use his timing fixture.
I have the OEMs too... just never used them.

What always amazes me is how these engines use Philips or slotted screws instead of hex bolts for high torque high corrosion applications.

Sadly we can't save them all. I have an assorted collection from an old Sears 3 hp air cooled to two sears 3.5 models ( one badged Wuzard haha but both identical and Johnson 9.9 and Evinrude 10 and a bigger Evinrude 33hp?? Cant identify. You can't say you didn't try. I allways have a big trolling Minkota for gitting back to the dock cause I'm 80 yrs old and can't paddle far.😅) Will keep watching your projects. Hey Brandon, have you ever done a video on the early 70s Evinrude lower unit kicking out of gear?
An upcoming project for my channel is going to be a 1971 Evinrude 18hp resurrection of a motor that has been in my family since new. According to my father, the shift dog was a weak point on these motors and when they wore out, the outboard would slip out of gear, often at full throttle. I believe he had changed out the shift dog a couple of times in the life of the motor prior to it's retirement in the mid 90s. It has been many years since this outboard has run but I recall the last time I used it, it was popping out of forward gear, suggesting the shift dog was again worn out.
Although my father claims the shift dog issue was quite common on this vintage of OMC, I have not heard much of a mention of it on any research I have done. Have you encountered any chronic issues with these shift dogs from the early 70s?

Maybe I missed something so I hope you can help me understand. In the beginning of this video you were going along at full throttle and the motor seemed to me stalling out or perhaps staving for gas. My motor is showing the same problems. It runs fine at idle and low speed, but when I am full throttle it seems like it hesitates or just wants to slow down. Was it just the motor mount that caused this issue?

I can see the Evinrude engineers designing this engine.......Ok guys, lets make this motor so difficult to work on that we keep our dealers bank accounts looking good.

So was it the pump or the points?
Mine runs great til a high rpm then she kills so quick it'll snap your neck.

How do you remove the male fuel fitting by the tiller. Need to change the hoses.

    • @BrandonsGarage
      @BrandonsGarage  Рік тому

You don't, it's built onto the Tiller handle.
...well, you could remove the whole handle, but it's easier just to fight getting the hose changed.

Why did you wash your hands in that dirty ass water at the end? I mean you were wearing gloves the whole video, did you just wanna look cool? I know for a fact right after you stuck your hands in that gnasty ass poopy butt water you went to an actual sink and washed that shit right back off. Do all good mechanics wash their hands in the test tank water when they're done? I NEED ANSWERS.
