  • 90% of the battle is just showing up. I don't think Tony Horne got the memo
Prior to Super Bowl XXXIV between the St. Louis Rams and the Tennessee Titans, Rams WR Tony Horne was an AP Second Team All-Pro and was the best return man in football. Days before the game, he almost got cut for doing one of the dumbest things imaginable

Tony Horne was freaking awesome as a returner, he should have lasted a little longer. 3 100+ yd returns and 4 tds plus another in the playoffs.

Years ago, I remember MTV doing a special on the Super Bowl and they did a segment on Dick Vermeil when he coached the eagles and rams……it was revealed that Vermeil had a task that if any player on his team got out of line, that player would be released……..

Just another chapter in the tragic jinx of the Cincinnati Bengals.
Although Wilson was a good player and would have given the Bengals another target in the SB, losing pro-bowl level RT Joe Walter in the last regular season game to a non-contact blown knee was an even bigger loss. Since Boomer Esiason was a lefty, it was JOE WALTER and not Anthony Munoz who was the blindside protector.
Then, the notorious leg-whipping 49ers took all-pro NT Tim Krumrie out with a broken leg on their first offensive series.

Karma did not forget since years later was when Joe Montana left San Fran for Kansas City while he could still play and then six years after that was when Steve Young was knocked out of a Monday Night Football game against Arizona on a particularly vicious sack by Cardinals cornerback Aeneas Williams.
The two ironies of that memorable play are this was the final game of both Steve's career and San Fran running back Lawrence Phillips - who was on the very last of quite a few extra chances of redemption - because LP was supposed to have picked up Williams on the blocking assignment. LP totally flaked out instead.

How is this the dumbest player in supr bowl hitory when we had players do drugs before the game, have sex with night workers and even lose their helmet before kickoff lmao
Thinis dumb true, but it's not the dumbest, hell I'd argue benching your starting cornerback was one of the worst super bowl blunders ever.

Dick Vermeil has quite a knack of coaching some awesome kick returners. Horne and Az Hakim in St Louis and later on Dante Hall when he coached the Chiefs. Wally Henry back in the Eagles days.

I still say that it should be Leon Lett(down) in SB XXVII, as the Cowboys could've had the most points (59) in SB history (surpassing SF's record of 55), Lett collected a Bills fumble, and was running it back for a possible touchdown (if he had secured the ball instead of showboating, by holding it out with one hand, down and away from himself 🤦), however, a Bills player caught up to him, JUUST before crossing the goal line, and knocked it out of Lett's hand for a touchback! 😱 🤷

    • @anthonyjkenn6319
      @anthonyjkenn6319 4 дні тому +1

@@simplysteve68 Don Bebee, who was their main backup WR at that time, was the one who caught up to Lett on his blind side and knocked the ball from his hands. Can't necessarily fault Lett for celebrating a bit early. The "Lett It Be" touch of the blocked FG in that Thanksgiving game against Miami that gave the Dolphins the extra shot that won them that game was far worse. I can still hear Bob Trumpy, doing color commentary with Dick Enberg on PbP for NBC, screaming "NOOOOO!!!" on the replay when Lett slid and touched the ball. (Or, was it Don Criqui on PbP for that game?) (Edited for correct Bills player.)

Imagine if Tony Horne hadn't torched his career, and had been the one instead of Az-Zahir Hakim receiving that ultimately muffed punt in that playoff game against New Orleans. (Note: edited to correct Hakim's first name.)

Still probably would have been the same result, unfortunately. Tony was primarily the kick returner and Oz was the punt returner. 😢 I had a nickname for him: "Oz Hakim The Fumble Machine" 😖

Damn just seeing the abc logo for a Super Bowl makes me interested on what they might show after the Super Bowl in 2027. Do they show the Bachelor Bachelorette on Sunday night do they show Extreme Makeover home edition or do they show a two hour premier of the Rookie. Gonna be an interesting lineup.

I think the stronger analogy to Horne was Eugene Robinson. Barret Robbins clearly had a mental illness. Depending on who you believe Stanley Wilson had a disease that led to his drug use. Robinson and Horne made mistakes that were clearly avoidable.

If you are an important vet with an otherwise spotless record for timeliness and behavior, you might get away with it with just an initial suspension. If you're down to your last chance because you've burnt all your other bridges with your attitude and lack of personal accountability; and your coach is Mr. Discipline Himself, Dick Vermeil -- who as Philly's HC nearly ran his star kicker, Tony Franklin, when Franklin deliberately disobeyed his orders to kick the ball deep and tried a failed onsides kick that helped cost the Eagles the ball game -- you suck it up and take the insipid questions.
