- This week we’re shaping and installing our breasthook. The first step is to make a paper pattern from the boat so we have a shape to go from. We’ll then take that over to our breasthook and find the best positioning and trace our cutting lines. In addition we’re going to lift the angles on the sides of the boat so we know what angle to cut our breasthook at. Then it’s on to my Atlas Power King bandsaw to cut the piece on all sides including the large radius in the center.

I'm not a plant expert or a scientist or any of that...in fact I'm not very bright at all. But I have been working with wood for a long time. I believe, and this is just my impression, that the darkness in the grain at the crook in the tree is where the wood cells have been damaged through stressors over time and the sap collects in them. The older sap deposits Amber's overtime. I've noticed those dark spots are always much harder than the rest of the wood similar to the darker anual rings that grow more slowly in the winter.
Someone could easily nit pick your bandsaw technique watching it on a video when you can arm chair quarterback but I can tell you from running big tools for 35 years, have a 36" 9.5HP saw in the shop, I could never have landed that breast hook with as good a fit as you did in a single shot. A perfect case of when someone makes something look easy... it will likely be the hardest thing you will ever try to do.
Structure and strength are what the nature of wood can allow us to aspire to, and achieve, through good carpentry. So we're duty bound to honour that, by letting the wood speak for itself as much as possible. It's working hard for us even where it can't be seen. Great job Louis.

I grew up using that exact same Atlas bandsaw. You are right about placement of the blade on the rubber wheel facings. Great memories. The sound is the same.
Anyone else would have been panic stricken hacking into that beautiful slab of timber. The key to results like this is the amount of forethought from Lou prior to making any cuts, measure 10 times cut once. Making sure he had enough room in the band saw to achieve that radius is typical of a well planned process, love this stuff!

I've seen some other breast hooks you made but every time I'm blown away by the beauty of the wood. This boat is such a cool combination of old and new, the stem shows it perfectly with the lamination and the crook right next to each other.

The rain moisture gets puddled where the limb jets off the tree is why there darker growth rings.

Lou , Howdy from Corpus Christi ! I believe the discoloration in the figure of the oak is mineral streak. In cabinet making with veneered panels we called matched figure like that pattern " horse's main", Great eye for the selection of that crotch. Best Regards Matt

That one piece is going to set the tone of the whole boat. The way the grain follows the lines of the boat will tell the viewer that every detail of the boat that he cannot see is just as perfect as the breasthook. (BTW, if you want to modify my card, I've moved from Ypsilanti to Milan, MI.)

From what I can find out Lou, with figuring out wood crotch terminology, like the medullary rays the dark area's in the grains are simple called grains. There are light colored grains and dark colored grains, within the grains themselves.

i friggin love you dude, my local coast live oak is just like that. no straight lumber out of it, but you get great crotches that are more than strong. way more than strong. sneezes at that without thinking about it? you've got me laughing myself to the floor. just like that. yeah when you wet it it's AMAZING. right?
How often do you get cracking and warping with crotch wood like that? I'd think it would be very unstable with seasonal changes in humidity.
