Building the V-Bottom Skiff - Episode 32: Installing the inwhales

  • It's a Tips double header, two episodes this week and more to come!
This week is a especially challenging step in our V-Bottom Skiff build, installing the inwhales. There is really no margin for error here and we're going to have to work to make sure we don't cut our inwhales too short. Ideally, we'll keep them a little long and saw-fit each end so we get the tightest best fit possible. But first we need to go around and make sure our inwhales are in exactly the right position. So we're created a little guage that we used on the starboard side and now we're going to mirror that difference between the guard and inwhales on the port side. Once we have them in exactly the right position we can begin with our saw-fit both aft and at the bow.

It's such a pleasure to watch someone who has reached such a level of this craft that every potential moment of disappointment that might be caused by a gap or a mismatch is foreseen and avoided - a policy of zero tolerance that can only be achieved from years of experience. While I can only fumble as a total novice by comparison, and accept my gaps with a promise to do better next time, Louis is coming good on all such promises to himself in this project. All who find beauty in this channel are kindred spirits, and I feel part of a clan. Cheers to you all. Too much whiskey probably, but hey.

I started watching your videos about six or seven years ago when i got interested in boatbuilding. Now i have two years of experience from boatbuilding school, four and a half years of professional experience renovating yachts fulltime, first two and a half years as an apprentice. You are an inspiration that brings young people in to this craft and i thank you for the inspiration you have given me to pursue my dream job.

It's amazing that you could get the inwales and other long boards in single run lengths. That would definitely up the production costs and re/sale value. A little planing to smooth the tops of the inwales, and then the caps and finishing, and whatever else this land-locked guy commenting isn't currently thinking about, and time for a ride.

If this was my boat I'd envision a nice turbo diesel, mounted center ship and incorporate a twin seat center console over the engine. With a nice box, decent prop and she'd boogie along with the added bonus of good economy. She's a well built, lovely looking tough boat, I'd be real pleased if i'd built her, well done old fella, top job

Nice to see it nearing completion. Great tip about the slant fit. Learning from your mistakes is the stuff you remember. All the projects I have done have little defects that I figure out and could do perfectly the next time around. That's why you build a small boat before you build a big one.

You did an amazing job with a standard crosscut saw. I could never manage that sort of cut with a crosscut saw. I like using a Japanese pull saw for saw fits. It has a thinner kerf and I feel like I have more control. I have several different size pull saws with different blade thickness so I can really sneak up on the final fit.

Louis, would a 3rd saw fit on the front of the inwhale cause it to be too loose? Just curious - it's a really tight fit right now, just wondering if a 3rd would have ruined it or not! Thank you, sir - it's a pleasure to watch you work!
