Yup, always two seals on shafts like that. One's oriented one way, one's oriented the other, that way, you're creating a barrier on both sides. One for oil, one for water. The idea behind those seals is that the lip gets filled with grease and thus you force them to stay in place. Technically speaking, to make them work you have to pack the cavity between them with grease, then drive the top seal in. Which implies you drive it in after the shaft's in place to force it to bloat and hold pressure on the shaft. Tho it's tricky to do, because you can put too much.
A Pod between hulls for cold wind sailing will be worth its weight in gold , really important, even a small one with room for one berth to sit in and lie down in while sailing, real good addition
Love how every time your mum cleans and paints the hulls , then next week you have a nice wall to cut a bit out off 😅, then. Mum comes back and starts all over again 😂😂 , and your dad's a star ⭐, ols school just like myself😊, if you can. Fix it yourself , it's sorted 😊.
So good to see your Mum and Dad out there getting dirty , doing the hard yards, you are blessed and it is always entertaining even the mundane stuff! Keep up the good content and soon there will be adventures on the high seas.
Sometimes when you have a shaft that has a score line from the lip seal there is a simple fix. Place a thin washer 1/32-1/16” thick down first where the seal goes. It needs to fit smoothly on the sides and not flop around. The ID needs to be removed so the washer basically only contacts the seal face and doesn’t touch the seal’s lip seal at all. Basically you are spacing the seal off the bottom where it normally sits so its lip seal contacts another part of the shaft. For large diameter shafts there are very thin sleeves you can buy that slide over a shaft and ‘build up’ the shaft diameter. Also welding and grinding….spacing the seal is usually the best in terms of time and money. Nice work as always. Great parents always helping.
Watching the three of them working together is a pleasure, I went to University and became what my mother used to describe as an educated idiot, I am not used to working with my hands (it was frowned upon) but we desperately need people who can make things work and take a pride in their work like Steve and Mark and Mary ,looking forward to seeing cruising videos on the South Seas, many thanks for your videos.
Always (even more of) a pleasure to watch when your parents are visiting!. Love your mothers sparkling personality!, and your fathers stoic approach. More please!👍😀
Told you last time just who the stars of the show are when they are with you , lovely to see them back , when reading the comments I bet they are the most talked about and commented parents on you tube 😊❤
Hi Mom, Dad & Son. Mark, seals in outboard. Reason for two back to back. One keeps oil in, other keeps water out. Must go back to back. Fair winds and following seas mates!
Your Mum and Dad are absolutely great. Your Mum's a treasure I can't stop smiling when she's on .Progress is super we are going to see you in the Caribean for winter.
Well done, you have come on in leaps and bounds, I built my own boat back in 2008 and it’s a steep learning curve. Your parents are great, your dad really knows his stuff your mum is lovely and obviously thinks your the best thing since sliced bread (mum knows best)wished she was my mum, keep them coming.
When reconditioning engines I prefer to get double the number of seals and keep the 2nd set handy just in case things go wrong again. When you are far from civilisation there is nothing more useful than a nice big spare parts kit. Must be so helpful to have your folks there to give a helping hand, looks like they arrive at just the right times in the project.
Your Mum is gorgeous and your Dad is proper good bloke, I see where you get your engineering skills and good looks from! The three of you together is the definition of a bloody good team.
Your mom and dad are wonderful people you are a lucky guy to have such loving parents. I'm adopted and never really knew my father he passed away when I was 3 years old. Mom said he was a mechanic. I can visualize him helping me the way your father does . Thanks for showing the part of this where you struggled to get it right, through our struggles is how we learn .
I give you props for all of the hard work you have put into your catamaran been following you since the beginning when you purchased it when it was sitting on the bottom of the berth . It's amazing to see how wonderful it is turned out to be keep up the great work with your parents and I hope to see you sail off into the sunset and laughing at the haters....... Thank you for the invite into the restoration of your catamaran.....
You have such cool parents, Mark! You're getting it done. Day by day and bit by bit. But it's nice that your folks visit and that they can help out with the boat. It's really great to see, mate! Cheers!
As requested, a nice comment - it’s such a joy to see you and your parents working together on Mahi. I’m sure that someday in the near future that peace lily and Aldi bonsai will be drinking in the sun of a tropical anchorage.
Keep going mark you are doing an amazing job with this boat can’t wait to see it sailing also you are a very lucky man to have such great parents live the dream and see the world from the ocean
[Captain Ron/] "Just a little dry rot there, Boss. Every boat has some (just not this far below the waterline)." [\Captain Ron] TBH, I'm a little jelly of your woodworking skills
Next time plan to screw the wedge down. Dry fit it with the screws. Then unscrew, epoxy, and re screw. Remove the screws and fill the screw holes when the epoxy is like 80 percent hard (after 12-24 hours depending on temperature). Clamping is OK, but two flat surfaces with epoxy between them tend to slide around when you clamp them. Some people also use a little bit of 5 minute epoxy and just hold it in place until that sets. Then the dollops of 5 minute hold it in place until the normal epoxy fully cures.
U geaux Boieee !!! Your a true Salty Pioneer.. keep up the Consistency. U deserve what God will bless you with. Blessings “ Everything that makes you feel good”. Blessings , not despair!
I love watching your progress but any episode where your parents visit is a treat. Best wishes to you all and keep moving forward, you’ll be asea before you know it.
I sincerely hope you take your mum and dad, on week long cruise, free of work and plenty of r and r, before taking your long sail cruise. They are precious.
An important thing to remember when laminating things is to have an escape route for air. I learned this from tiling. When air gets trapped it glides around, exactly like what happened to you.
Enjoy your time with your parents! Their only goal is for you to outlive them and be successful. Always remember goal 1 and work with them on goal 2. Love your content.
The number one parents award goes to Steve and Mary.
Their son is pretty good too.
He's okay. 😂
😘🤗⛵️🤗😘

I loved-loved-LOVED that line… “It’s not quite fitting… ….but, ‘yeah,’ my dad will have a solution for that, I’m sure.”
Big ratchet strap around the two hulls pull them together lol lol ( joke) lol
It'll be ah-ight
How sweet your parents are!❤
@@snuggles243 Could be a solution. They use your technique at Boeing aircraft...afterall.
It would be a chuffing great big 🔨

Your parents are ace Mark, never had a dad like yours so I'm determined to be as good as your dad to my little lad as he grows up...

Watching your dad work on that engine was awesome.... so much skill and knowledge..... Zen and the Art of Boat Motor Maintenance........

Mark, your dad is a legend with the mechanics !
Nice when dad can still show you how to do it!
That is why I was recommending brackets on every chainplates but I like what you do to remedy the mold. No annoying advice today, keep the good work.
Nice work by mum and dad!
