Building the V-Bottom Skiff - Episode 40: Painting up the topside, bottom and out the open door!

- The V-Bottom Skiff is going out the door! In this episode we put on our final coat of TotalBoat Wet Edge topside paint and also a final coat of Spartan Red bottom paint. This has been an amazing build and it's been so fun to share it with all of you. The boat is headed to the outboard motor shop to have the engine mounted on the transom and then we'll get her back, oil the interior and put her in the water for some sea trials in Rhode Island before delivering her to her new home in 10,000 lakes in Minnesota. We want to especially thank TotalBoat and everyone else who helped make this build possible.

It's so nice to see Lou excited and pleased with the fruits of his work. What an incredible man!
A belated congratulations to you, Lou for creating this amazing craft and thanks, Halsey for bringing the process to our screens. It’s as much fun to see Lou’s satisfaction as seeing him build!
She's a real beauty, Lou. Great job from design to fruition. It looks so much bigger out of the shop and up on the trailer out in the sun. I fell behind on watching videos as I helped my mother get through her first round of chemotherapy, but I can hardly wait to catch up some and see not only this beauty on the water, but where you've gotten to on your other build/s. Keep on keeping on, brother. God bless.
Thanks for the ride, Lou.
I have thoroughly enjoyed your design and build.
My father was a cabinet maker and watching and listening to your build regularly reminded me of him...
The love of wood and the pride shown in craftmanship you share with my dad is a pleasure to watch.
You have enhanced the already wonderful memories of times I shared with Jock.
Again, many thanks.
Alan Smith.
I love watching Lou take out his newly built boats, The excitement and joy he feels is palpable! Looking forward to the video.
She is a beauty sir.
If fuel ever prices itself out of existence you can put leeboards on and it'll be a dandy sailor.
A work of art, Lou. Gorgeous. You inspire me to be a better craftsman and teach me things with every single episode. You are by far my favorite YT creator. Thank you!
LOL, That 3D animation at the end threw me off! awesome.
Can't wait to see it on the water .a true craftsmen built it
The beauty of self designing a boat is looking forward for her performant ! GOOD WORK.
I’m on my ninth can of beer this evening folks so, please forgive me for spouting off. I have so enviously followed Lou building this boat, dreaming about living aboard while, cruising the great loop. Facing the fiercest of weather along the intercoastal, the Great Lakes and then leisurely floating down the Mississippi and into the Gulf of Mexico only to do it all over again. I sensed how proud Lou was of this boat and it’s design and it’s construction process and I just drooled over it. I commend him on his accomplishment!
It's actually quite sad that you'll never make another one. When that's the only boat in the world I wish I owned. She's absolutely beautiful! I'm so envious of the owner. This has been the best boat building series ever on any channel.
the beauty there is Lou has done all he can to empower you to build one for yourself! go get it sailor!
40 videos and a boat! Thank you Halsey. Thank you Lou. Tips from a Shipwright never disappoints. Can't wait to see it on the water!
I watched this entire build, now I wait with baited breath for the launch and sea trial that was promised.
"A V-bottom skiff in a shed is safe, but that's not what skiffs are built for." I can't wait to see this beauty going through her paces on the water.
I have been watching your channel for years and it inspired me to build a ply on frame boat I built a Spira Kachemak design and have been enjoying it for years Thanks for this inspiration You are a great craftsman
It makes me decide I've done the right thing with my life he said, wow if only i could have that felling of life long accomplishment
He loves what he is doing...at every stage !!! How wonderful for a man to be happy in his life's work .
It is very nice, but I spotted the bit where the perpendicular boarding has it's weakness. It's 3-5 feet forward from transom, where it should lean against the wake there is slight indent. Straight running boards with framing you can shape that to more spoonlike for more efficient hull. Lou's hull although has it's stability on it's side, but needs a lot more motor.. Thank you, Lou and the Crew! The spark of inspiration has ignited! Can't wait to see her in waves!
Reminds me of Bob Ross, calm and happy painting
Well done boy she looks I mean she really looks grand a very builtifull boat ,,!!!!of course I would expect nothing else from a highly skilled craftsman as your self I look forward to seeing her on the water and next endeavor
Awesome! JOB Lou the skiff looks totally awesome! I bet it rides as good as it looks! Can't wait to see it on the water!
absolutely beautiful sir you are a true craftsman!
That drone footage at the end was awesome.
It's encouraging to watch your craftsmanship come alive. A wooden boat is on my bucket list. Unfortunately my bucket has a hole in it but as soon as I can I'll plug it.
I'd take that boat over a $20million super yacht any day. I love that boat.
Owesome looks good 👍
Lou!!!
Beautiful work, so happy to see it in the sunshine
Oh man, cliffhanger. Darnit Lou! LOL Til next time, thank you.
I built a small framed V bottom skiff a few years back - on YT. Loved it! Loved building it so much I sold it and now almost finished building a 21’ folding trailerable trimaran. But for this one I went over to the dark side. It’s an epoxy/pvc/fibreglass sandwich construction. Light but strong. Modern design modern materials. She looks fantastic. And will sail beautifully I’m sure. But I gotta say I much prefer building in wood. But had I built it in wood it would not be half the boat this one is. Boats, they’re always a compromise, one way or another.
Awesome Lou, your so right about making things with your hands !
That boat has beautiful lines, she's should ride well in the water Lou!
It has been our pleasure to help and follow along with this incredible build!! Amazing work, Lou!
I’m glad Total Boat has helped Lou with this boat. I’m hoping to build a boat and plan on using their products
Turned out beautiful Lou. Thank you for sharing.
What a journey. It's interesting to me that you will never make another boat like this one. However as a lifetime of furniture making has taught me, it's not custom if you make more than one! 😉
My beautiful hometown. Love the boat going over the m.h. bridge .
Gosh it’s just so dang pretty Lou. 👍🇺🇸✌️
We’ll done Louis. Looks a gem,
She turned out Beautiful Lou, I can see the pride you have in her and can't wait to see her in the water running under power.
What a beautiful boat Lou. Great clip going across that massive bridge mate

Just beautiful!
That has turned out fantastic Lou! Great work.
Oh, Lou, what a beautiful thing you have created! And it's absolutely wonderful to share in your pleasure; to see a master craftsman and his work is always a joy. I feel especially privileged to have my name on your Patreon board and to have been able to follow the creation of this masterpiece.
Can’t wait to see it in the water
Nice work. When you pulled that last bit of tape off, I had to run, you scared me. 😁
This is the WOW factor of all boat building channels!
I've so thoroughly enjoyed watching this build, thank you for sharing it with us all. It's motivational for sure!
Whooo that is pretty. What a fabulous boat. Congratulations
Congratulations on your beautiful creation!
Wow, Lou she’s beautiful.
A work of art Lou 🇮🇪
In the OED under the definition of Shipwright should be Lou's picture. He is the master of his craft, second to none.
Great job Lou, she’s a beauty!
Lou God bless and stay with us for many more years. You are really a wonderful man, teacher & boatbuilder. Do not know anyone else like you.
cool shot of boat on bridge.... and a nice boat, well done Lou
The lines of Lou's design are just beautiful. Sitting on the trailer in the opening segment really shows them off. It looks like it'll slice through the water with no problem at all.
Congratulations - she looks great. I want one!
Looks a real treat Lou
Lou you’re the man!
That boat is just awesome 👍👍👍👍💯
Orca time.
Fantastic craftsmanship, fantastic boat and fantastic série of videos,
Watching you stripping the tape created quite an impressive reveal of a beautiful boat. She will make her captain proud.
That is an absolutely beautiful piece of boatbuilding. Thank you Lou for bringing such beauty into this world.
I got into into boat building just recently-about four years ago, I built my first rowing skiff. I applied way too much epoxy, and had many other “learning experiences with that. I then built two stitch and glue kayaks, a teardrop camper, and now a sailing dinghy. It is truly an addiction. The only problem that I have now is I am living in landlocked Idaho. Lakes are now boring to me. Being close to retirement, I see moving from here. Call! And another problem I have is one cannot find marine plywood in Idaho. I don’t like to build with construction grade plywood.
What a pleasure to watch!
What a beautiful boat!
A dream come true
Can't wait to see it in the water, what a pretty boat!
Lou I love your passion ❤️ great build as always
Inspiring to say the least. Thank you Lou, for sharing. I can’t wait to see her bounding the ocean waves.
what a beautiful boat!
You know how it was, Lou, 40 years ago - there were nearly a dozen local boatwrights that turned out flat-bottomed, & deadrise skiffs like these, some smaller, some larger, on a monthly basis.
Thank you for your splendid work on the boat. Thank you even more for your more splendid work on sharing & explaining your work on her.
I anxiously await your video of her sea trial.
Best Regards,
JohnnyWest,
SedgyCreek, Virginia

That boat makes me wish I was a boat person....
That's a gooda Lou!
Absolutely beautiful craft. Seeing the boat out in the sun really highlights the work that brought it to this point. Can't wait for the next video.
Masterpiece my friend👍
Lou, I really enjoyed meeting you and spending some type talking boats at the Newport Boat Show! Thank you for signing my Tips from a Shipwright hat. I would love to come up to the Open Door Boat Shop sometime and talk some more! This has been a fantastic build series and I'm looking forward to seeing the creation of ORCA.
Wow! Looks amazing! Is this your favourite boat you have built?🎉
Awesome Lou.
can't wait
I will never get bored watching Lou's videos!
That skiff is a master piece. But I'm a little concerned about there is no wood protection for the inside wood. Lou, will you oil the inside wood or use another product to protect the wood inside the boat?
After Lou's description of that boat I'm curious if she has a single sister, LOL. For real, what a gorgeous creation this is where you can't find the line between function and form. I've learn so much here and have loved every minute of it, thanks Lou! :)
I love that boat. Simple, elegant lines, and colors that suit it perfectly. Congratulations!
You said it was hard to build but you made it look easy! She looks beautiful.
What a truly awesome creation. To have the skill to make something like that is brilliant. Have to say though, I am really looking forward to the orca build.
