Black Parade was a concept album, MCR were telling the story of a person who is dealing with cancer diagnosis.
Honestly, this is one that you should do from start to finish in 1 long format. The whole album ties together And just listening to parts of it don't do it the Justice it deserves.I would love to see you guys do this as a full reaction the whole album.
@@KAMUI138 to be fair, this was the first single and presented in a single format for radio.
Really? I never knew that at all. Only heard a bit of this band so I will have to add it to my list. ☺️😇❤️
@@Salena905 Try the single "Cancer" imo it's the saddest one.
@@astienv3824 oh ok I'll check that out in a minute or two then get back to you. 👍
My dudes, I refuse to believe you've never heard this song lol. This shit is like an anthem for a whole generation!
Nope never heard it till today
I think these guys are just a bit too old to have been in the right age that MCR appealed to in their hay-day.
Its not that rare, im part of the generation who was crazy about MCR and i didnt listen any song till last year
@@cinnabonbons Dunno dude, I'm in my late 30's and my little sister is mid 30's and she was playing this sort of stuff while I was running Muse.
I was a goth at the time, but I didn't like emo, so while I even knew the lyrics from people quoting them all the time, even I hadn't actually heard it until a few months ago.
'I feel like I'm going through an emo phase now with the music we're covering' 🤣🤣🤣
To the people that grew up with this magnificent band, this truly isn't just a song, this is an entire Anthem ❤
Emo is originally short for "emotionally driven punk rock". So yes, emo is an offshoot of punk.
Emotional hardcore.
It was emocore. It was a derogatory term in the dc hardcore scene in the late 80s when bands started singing about feelings and emotions and stuff. Brian Baker supposedly started it poking fun at some band (I can’t remember who). But then rites of spring and fugazi and stuff and eventually mcr was the huge band.
@@captaincrespo3327 fugazi weren’t emocore.
“Helena” is an iconic song by them, an absolute banger. Definitely that should be your next MCR song. HOWEVER, I need you to know that there is an absolutely phenomenal live acoustic version that I think not a lot of people know about. Certainly I’ve never seen a reactor react to it. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
“Ghost Of You” is another amazing song with a very different vibe. It’s slower and feels more intimate.
I love ghost of you it's one of my all time favourite songs because depending on my mood it can make me feel a lot of different emotions. For example if I'm having a really bad day with my depression and I hear it usually it'll make me cry but if I'm in a really good mood it makes me feel nostalgic and think back to amazing memories with people and animals that are unfortunately no longer here. I usually find it quite hard to show/express my emotions and I never ever cry so it's crazy to me how one song can make me feel all different days depending on where I am, who I'm around, what I'm doing, if I'm just singing or actually taking the lyrics in properly and as I said before my mood as well
Sorry about the lack of grammar and possible spelling mistakes but I'm dyslexic and tend to rely on auto correct and predictive text but even sometimes they don't help fingers crossed what I've typed makes sense and you understand what I mean but if there's any part that makes no sense just let me know what part and I'll try to explain or retype that bit
Ghost of You is my second favorite to Headfirst for Halos…one is great vocals and the other is RAW Af.
Agreed loved the song so much as a teenager…named my pupper after Helena💕
Ashamed to admit: I completely avoided MyChem their entire career because I heard some other bands labeled "emo" at the time and wrote them off. Cut to now, and I kick myself daily for being unfairly judgmental and never getting to see them live when they were together.
We’ll Im happy to tell you they are back and shows are on sale now. I’m seeing them 2 times this tour. I hope you get to see them as it’s not too late.
They are touring right now in the USA; I'm going in September to see them! I did the same thing, ignored probably the best band of the 21st century so far bc of the emo rep.
Love “Helena” and “Famous Last Words” and “I’m not okay”.
This is also making me think of other bands from around that time like Fall Out Boy, The Killers, Taking Back Sunday, Panic at the Disco!, Good Charlotte, All American Rejects…man so many I kinda forgot about til now.
When I’m having a rough time I still think to myself “I’m not ok, I’m not o-fuckin-kay” 😆
@@ShanLH5 I love when he says “Trust me” it’s so perfect. But I always have a laugh at that song cause when I sing along I always sing it like “I’m not woke-hey!”😂such a dumb little thing but it helps snap me out of any heavy feels. At least for a moment. Take care!💕
@@AmberPearcy exactly! Saying “I’m not o-fuckin-kay” to myself kind of gives me a chuckle and helps me lighten up a bit in a weird way. Stuff happens, we work through it the best we can 😊💕
This album came out in the mid 2000s. The lyrics are from the perspective of a guy who is dying and reflecting on a memory from his childhood (his father taking him to see a marching band). It’s a concept album… watch the official video and it will make more sense, it shows the main character laying in a hospital bed…
I have a hard time listening to them, although I’ve heard this album front to back a million times it brings up some bittersweet memories. My ex best friend LOVED My Chem and we listened to this on many road trips. We had a falling out several years ago and things ended badly after 33 years of friendship. I haven’t listened to them since cuz it reminds me of her 😔 She hurt me pretty deeply and it’s been really difficult to get over. I’m trying 😊 But just so you guys know, if she stumbles across this video and shows up in your comments, IT’S ON! 😆😩
Other MCR songs: Famous Last Words, The Sharpest Lives, Helena, The Ghost of You
Oh btw MCR broke up in 2013… they got back together a few years ago but I don’t think they’ve put out any new music yet
🤗
@@AmberPearcy thank you Amber ☺️
Daam girl, sorry to hear abou you and yur friend but if that friendship was real it can be fixed both parties wanting equally. Good luck
@@dsanchez9703 she let a very controlling man come between us and he basically pushed me out of her life. I don’t think she has his permission to be friends with me anymore 🙄😩 Whatever, it’s her life. She has to deal with the consequences of her own actions. It’s sad and hurtful how it ended but I have to move on for my own inner peace. Thank you 😊
@@ShanLH5 alright Girl, i hear u.🥺
Welcome to the Black parade gentlemen 😁 You've opened up one hell of a can of worms. You should check a lot of their stuff out 😉
The thing I love about this song and album overall was it feels like it's saying "hey, I feel bad, sad, etc, but I'm also gonna fight through it and i'll be fine."
And this probably doesn't feel like emo because a lot of emo bands like Fallout Boy and Panic! At the Disco seemed to wallow in misery, MCR tried to encourage rising above it. Gerrard Way (MCR's lead singer) also doesn't like the emo label his band has gotten called the emo genre "fucking garbage."
Also side note: Gerard Way has written some comics, including The Umbrella Academy which was made into a show on Netflix.
Listen… I’m not a huge MCR fanatic, but I had heard so many of their songs, when I got to see these guys live, it changed my entire mindset about them. GREAT ENERGY LIVE, incredible sound and just pure madness
I don’t think Green Day started the EMO, they sure continued the PUNK ROCK & ALTERNATIVE ROCK movement, but I wouldn’t say EMO, that was more other bands
Agreed. It's only recently that I've heard Green Day referred to as emo.
Unfortunately I fall into the same category and didn't find them till they broke up.
So I didn't get to see them live.
But, silver lining, I scored tickets to one of the comeback shows!!
That is unless it keeps getting canceled/rescheduled till I'm dead .... 😀😐
Green Day & MCR (among many others) are pop punk; listen to either band's early recordings before they were on major labels & they were more on the hardcore side.
I agree I wouldnt call green day emo, but I would say they laid the ground for emo bands
I appreciate them more now that I’m a bit older. My wife was into them around the time they were popular and now my daughters listen to MCR. My favorite song and video by them is “The Ghost of You.” It’s pretty amazing.
FLW for the win.
also my fav song by them
This song is an anthem, an absolute epic banger of a track. The album it came of of, as others have said, was a concept album and it is filled with excellent tracks by this band. As far as Green Day starting the emo phase, I feel like through the pop/punk aesthetic they may have been adjacent to it, but not immediately responsible. You could almost lump the emo phase with the pop punk phase and never see a true difference between the styles- the bands and songs are so interchangeable and accepted within each community. MCR, Fall Out Boy, Dashboard Confessional, AFI, A Panic! at the Disco, Paramore, FiR, Yellowcard... A lot of these bands dabbled in the emo phase but ultimately became something bigger, or better over the whole.
What's your opinion on where All Time Low belong? Because you could argue that they're emo and you can also argue that they're pop punk. One of the main ones that bugs me though is Evanescence because I really don't think that they fit in one specific place now thinking about it there's You Me At Six, Simple Plan, Blink-182, Good Charlotte, The All-American Rejects, Thirty Seconds To Mars, Pierce The Veil, Sleeping With Sirens ....
They're just the main ones off the top of my head that can be classed as emo and pop punk and but I'd really struggle to just put them in one specific group because they fit in to a few of them
Sorry about the bad grammar and possible spelling mistakes but I'm dyslexic and tend to rely on auto correct and predictive text but unfortunately sometimes even they can't help me at all
@@georginawatson9057 I think all those bands you mentioned, (excluding Evanescence), fit into the pop/punk/emo trifecta. Evanescence I think fit more into the gothic rock genre, alongside Lacuna Coil, Leave's Eyes, Bella Morte, Epica and Within Temptation.
One of the best music videos of all time… big part of the experience IMO
True, I wondered why they "only" watched the lyrics-video and not the official one.
Great song, album and band imo. The album “The Black Parade” has sold over 4 million copies and made these guys the biggest band in the mid 00s, not just the biggest emo band. This album catapulted MCR into the mainstream. I still prefer the album before this called Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge, but this album and song still holds a special place in my old emo heart lol
This album came out in 2006. I listened to it then, and 16 years later I'm still listening to it now. It is an incredible album and I highly recommend listening to the whole thing.
You guys have got to check more MCR out, this album is beautiful the whole way through, but you wanted to know who plays what and all so here goes
Gerard Way - vocals
Frank Iero - guitar
Mikey Way - bass
Ray Toro - guitar
Bob Bryar - drums
Emo music to check out. My chemical Romance: Thank you for the venom, Helena, The ghost of you, I'm not okay. The Used: Blue and Yellow, Take it away, I'm a fake, Box of sharp objects. AFI: Miss Murder, Silver and cold, The leaving song part 2, Girls not grey. Taking Back Sunday: A decade under the influence, makedamnsure, and Cute without the e.
The first reference I recall of a band being called “emo” was Dashboard Confessional in 2002.
Also, The Black Parade reminds me of Green Day’s American Idiot. Both were produced by Rob Cavallo.
Jawbreaker, Shudder to Think, Sunny Day Real Estate, and DCFC was where it was at for late 80s all through the 90s and early 00s emo that I enjoyed immensely.
I was at college in the 80s and emo was definitely a thing then.
Such a powerful song and message ♥️ you gotta watch the actual music video!
Great reaction, my chemical romance was part of my life soundtrack years ago. Hello from Nicaragua guys!
I wasn't and am still not a huge emo fan but this band and this album are the echelon of 2000 rock. I love this album every song is awesome and the whole story overall told is awesome
I 100% agree with you and the marching band uniform that they wear is and always will be iconic. I listened to this album so much that I can still remember roughly the exact order all the songs go in. Eventhough I can confidentially say that it's been at least 4/5 years since I've actually played the album. The only reason I haven't listened to it for so long is because I can't find my cd anywhere.
I even remember the order of all the songs on these albums as well
1. You Me At Six Sinners Never Sleep
2. Pink Funhouse
3. Pink M!sunderstood
4.James Blunt Back To Bedlam
5. All Time Low Nothing Personal
6. All Time Low So Wrong, It's Right
7. Bring Me Horizon Sempiternal
8. Bring Me Horizon That's The Spirit
9. Yungblud 21st Century Liability
10. Yungblud Weird
I'm quite surprised how many albums I know from front to back and from back to front. All of them were just straight off the top of my head and there's still a few more I could name before having to think about it properly.
Sorry I just realised the length of this comment also sorry about the bad grammar and possible spelling mistakes but I'm dyslexic and tend to rely on autocorrect and predictive text but even sometimes they can't help me haha sorry again about the length of this comment
You know when I was younger I concern myself about labels not anymore if you like the music you like the music but yes My Chemical Romance was definitely an emo band from back in the day I never really listened to him so here we go
im 19 and i agree. if u like it u like it!!!
Disenchanted is a great song to react from My Chemical Romance!
It blows my mind that it was 16 years ago when I bought this CD. Time goes so fast.
I discovered MCR back in middle school and now I'm 29 and I'm still a huge fan! MCR for life!
Btw, this song is considered the Bohemian Rhapsody of the modern Generation.
Dude the MEMORIES! I love MCR to death lol u guys rock:)
I've always loved this song ever since the day came it out. This is an amazing band to get into.
I vote next: A.F.I - Miss Murder. This band is the epitome of Emo Rock. If you wanna listen to more My Chemical Romance:
Helena
I’m Not Okay(I Promise)
Mama
Cancer
Teenagers
Famous Last Words
You forgot ghost of you. Fantastic song and a brilliant video aswell
My bad! Yes, awesome ring indeed.
My bad! Yes, awesome ring indeed.
My bad! Yes, awesome ring indeed.
My bad! Yes, awesome ring indeed.
2 years late, but I’m so glad I got to see y’all react to this!
Guy on the left had me smiling the entire video, loved his energy. Also mcr is my all time favourite band, they have a huge place in my heart, I'm going to see them in September I'm beyond excited lol
Loved your reaction, boys. This is still my favourite band since 2006, I was late. They themselves didn't think they were emo, but the stamp will forever be there. Hugs from Sweden.
I love the sharpest lives from this album, never seen anyone react to it
I was waiting for the bands to start at an All Time Low in Chicago and the dj played this while a couple thousand of us were just standing there. Probably the closest to a choir singing along when it started. One third of the ultimate Emo Anthem’s (panic at the disco, sins not tragedies and fob, sugar were going down as the other 2 of course).
And also the tattoo on my left ankle is a heart with a globe landscape inside along with the words “the world will ever take my heart”. As a social worker who sees bad shit a lot and hears about even more, it’s a good reminder to myself.
I could say so much. Gerard Way (lead singer) is a genius. He writes comics, including one that has been turned into an awesome show on Netflix (The Umbrella Academy). I wish so greatly that you would do a first reaction to the official music video to this song (a masterful art piece), and also to their song called Mama. Keep in mind when listening to Mama that the first sounds you hear are of bombs during a war. I'll stay tuned hoping you do more MCR reactions soon!
I’m geeking lmfaoooo “why would he ask you that?” I ALWAYS WONDERED THE SAME THING!!
MCR was my daughter's favorite band through middle & high school (she's 20). She's now in the Navy & I'm missing her like crazy. Thank you for the smiles to start my day. 💙 from Texas!
Hey guys. Couldn't catch up with your latest reactions recently. So I did it today. In case it went unnoticed: we love you for what you do. Thank you. So much.
Wow, thank you for this Ralf
Phenomenal album. I grew up with these guys in Jersey. Their story is incredible. Talented dudes who have gotten back together to tour. Great reaction! And I’m gonna ask again, react to Volbeat, Shotgun Blues! You’ll dig it!
Great song
Great reaction. This whole album is a masterpiece. A lot of people consider this song the “bohemian rhapsody of this generation” you should listen to Helena by them. As well as famous last words
I love some MCR.
Helena, I'm Not OK, Teenagers, Na, Na, Na, I don't love you, Famous Last Words.
If you didn't think you would like EMO,
Would love your thoughts on 00's modern British Glam Rock -
The Darkness - I Believe in a Thing Called Love.
a true anthem , this will live on through the ages
This song and album was MASSIVE when it came out! their biggest selling!
Love this guys!!! They´re so creative and so talented!
months late on this, watching this the day after the black parade's 16th birthday :) im glad you guys enjoyed it! just now, they finished up their north american tour, and seeing them live was incredible
Early 2000's to 08 was peak of Emo/Punk. We had the best bands growing up in HS.
they went on hiatus in 2013 and then they announced their reunion in 2019 and just exploded again, sold out all their shows on the first part of the return tour in minutes but when they first announced it they only announced one show, then a week later announced it was a tour. They made over a million dollars from their first concert and there was only a little over 5k seats, they then went on to sell out a 30k stadium three concerts in a row since they played 3 shows in six days at a stadium in the UK. They are on their north american leg of the reunion tour right now.
To this day, this is still a song that hits me. Mainly after so many cancer deaths so close. I love it and I still cry each time. This came out after my grandpa died from cancer and I have had 4 after. Crazy how music can bring so many memories back
I freaking love seeing peoples first reaction to this song!
The music video makes more sense to the "parade" part of it but just a movement a.k.a. party.. I think? Lol
It hits different when you watch the video! My favorite song!
Also, gerard way, the lead singer is the creator of "the umbrella academy".
Don't forget about "Thank you for the venom" or "Famous last words"... Both great songs with amazing sound and lyrics.
I would have loved to see your reaction to the music video of "Welcome to the black parade" though. Ps. This song was released September 12th, 2006
These guys are the pride of Jersey baby!🤘
Black Parade was released in 2006 and the band is touring this year, so, yeah, still going 👻
My introduction to emo was AFI during their Decemberunderground days, and The Used's album In Love and Death
This song ALWAYS gives me the chills! One of the 10 songs to take to a lonely island! I simply LOVE it! Greetz from Germany, guys! Keep up the good work!! :D
Got tickets Friday for the show in Cincinnati this August
I love this one and another one of theirs
called " Teenagers" my daughter liked them for a short while but then got hooked on Green Day instead. So only heard a small number of their songs. Emo was way after my time, there was a part of me that wanted to rebel and be a punk, but never dared do it and besides I loved too much different kinds of music. Did go through a metal faze, but even that didn't last long as loved everything else in the charts. I just love all music instead. 😂☺️
"Do they still put out new stuff?"
Your timing is impeccable xD
The difference between Emo and regular Punk/Pop Punk is the attitude and tone. The former is much more inward-focusing on emotions, usually negative emotions like grief, sorrow, depression, et cetera. This can be expressed in the lyrics, vocal performance, and chord progressions. The latter is much more lively and less depressive pretty much, often being more focused on energy and excitement than emotion, and when it does have emotion, it's usually either about passionate emotions like Love, Hate, Anguish, Angst, et cetera.
I am seeing them in Boston in 4 days. So excited.
Many people called it the Bohemian Rhapsody of that generation and for a good reason. It deals with a heavy subject, but it's not depressing as you may expect "emo" to be.
Also, you should look up some drum cover of this, it's super intense.
Whole album is a masterpiece
The official video is really hype too!
I'm a fan since 2007 - it obviously wasn't just a phase for me 😀 I can't wait to finally see them live this summer and be part of the black parade.
If I may suggest something you could react to it's Alesana - The Third Temptation Of Paris. I think this song is so beautifully written and composed that everyone should hear it.
"Bro that is fire."
Fuck yes.
Their album the black parade was released in 2006 October 23
His father passed away and the parade his dad took him to us the biggest memeoory he has of his father . It’s all about rememberinrb his dad positively
Pertaining to the mixing on this album, I can confirm that it's some of the best I've ever heard. And I'm a Yes fan.
Oh Yeah!!!!! Definitely here for this!!! 😁✌
The hole album is really good. It is one of the best albums ever made. It is seamless song to song and just great
Oh man... bringing me back to my teenage years... and I gotta suggest another key player from my teenage years, As I Lay Dying with their song Nothing Left... there is actually a Saga of those songs to listen to that connect together.
Emo started in the mid-80s as an offshoot of hardcore punk. Sounded a lot harsher and dissonant than what MCR is doing here. In the 90s indie rock took on some emo elements, and in the 2000s bands like MCR, Fallout Boy, Taking Back Sunday combined it with pop-punk. If you want to hear emo in it’s rawest form check out the song Sometimes by the Cali emotive-hardcore band Still Life. If that song is black coffee, than bands like MCR is coffee flavored ice cream - if you get my gist.
They broke up in 2013 I believe, and reunited and returned in 2019. No new music, but finally their return tour is happening this year.
I would check out Helena and I'm Not Okay.
I was listening to my chemical romance and fall out boy then I meet my boyfriend in high school, well nin tool queens soundgarden etc came into my life and I never looked back.. well until now haha
Yeah, check out Helena and Ghost of You, make sure it's the music video one though, it's pretty awesome.
They screwed the pooch not watching the video to THIS one.
My man said, "Why would he ask you that?!?" I laughed for 10 minutes
I don’t know shit about “Emo”…….They’re just an awesome rock & roll band imo
Green Day was definitely pop punk, but they did not start or ever become emo. Emo started back in the 80s but became mainstream in the early 2000s. MCR just ended up being the poster boys for the movement.
React to "Helena". Official video. Still makes me cry till this day. This song was about a cancer diagnosis. Helena is about the death of his and his brother's grandma (also a band member). "Ghost of you" quite amazing. Have to watch official video. Cried. Exactly why they call it emo. Makes you EMOTIONAL! Lol
Sigur Ros sings in a language they made up and they're coming to ATL in May. They're fantastic live Hollywood.
Omg, yes please
There are 3 kinds of emo music:
1) The kind you stop listening to before senior year of high school and never listen to again.
2) The kind that is iconic and becomes generationally universal.
3) The kind that becomes iconic to the degree that people older than the generation who it's universal to enjoy it.
MCR is undeniably the third of those types. The Black Parade album is what new emo bands aspire to.
Grew up straight metal….loved MCR as soon as they came out. Good shit is just good shit. 🤘
The black parade is the parade of souls crossing into the afterlife. “Someday I’ll leave you, a phantom, to lead you in the summer, to join the black parade”
If they had watched the actual damn video they might have figured the meaning out.
I heard Thursday and Taking Back Sunday first and then came Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance, and a local band Park was doing emo in the late 90’s before it blew up
"Son, when you grow up
Would you be the savior of the broken
The beaten and the damned?"
..........."Why would he ask you that?" Hahaha solid question right there.
Now that you’ve listened to MCR check out their frequent touring mates The Used. A few good songs from the used to check out is taste of ink, box full of sharp objects, poetic tragedy, or really any song from the first album.
Never listened to them, but this is better then I thought it would have been.
When it comes to MCR seeing the actual music videos brings the lyrics to life much more.
As someone who was agnostic on these guys and this album at the time - irony poisoning is a serious disease - this song has stuck with me into my mid 30s. That's gotta count for something.
If u guys liked My Chemical Romance u may want to check out my band.
It is called Hysteria Machine. we have a song called "Life is a Second" that has some similar aspects to "Welcome to the black parade".
Keep rocking guys!
Epic song. Epic writing.
Emo is a music genre that started in the 80's in Washington DC, it comes directly from hardcore punk, labeled emotional hardcore (emocore, emo) by Thrasher Magazine to describe the sound of the bands Rites of Spring and Embrace, which where formed by some hardcore pioneers. This bands played a Little more slower than og HC bands, they didn't talk about politics, they where talking about personal struggle, depression, etc. And the way they performed was often described as very "emotional". There have been 4 waves of emo untill now. The one where MCR took part (the 3th one) is the "emo pop" or "fake emo" wave, when the term was adopted by mainstream and everything was considered emo (even if it was pop punk, pop rock or alternative) it became a fashion and a clothing trend. Unfortunately when someonere reffers to emo, everyone instantly thinkd of this era.
Guys, black eyeliner goes back to people like Ozzy and Queen. Check out very early Queen and imagine it having modern sound. Won't some of it get emo? Like some of the Sheer Heart Attack stuff, or 1972 demos, like "Great Kind Rat" (first live versions in particular)
Could tou please do Famous last words by them too? Banger! The end always touches me in a different way👍🏼
While MCR outfits here are "just" (i.e. a take on) The Beatles' "Sgt Peppers' Lonely Heart" ones, a monochromatic black version of those.
Ghost Of You and I'm Not Okay ( I Promise ) are two other fantastic songs by them too
Cheers on Sigur Ros. They're incredible, and we're huge to me at the same time as my "emo phase."
