entry speed is and always will be number #1 with those sprint segs. if you can increase that you will increase the average speed because at 12 seconds, you need over 3mph in average speed to lose another second.

Nice job! I just got my first KOM today, also right next to my house. Uphill with a 32lb mountain bike, 2:53 came in with three seconds to spare. Felt soooo good. Fists pumping in the air screaming YES I actually got off my bike mid hill because the segment ends just before the top. I could hardly contain my excitement I was screaming for joy

I like your single-minded approach to attempting the KOM on that segment. The dominant trend in my area is long rides, and I see relatively few attempts on the shorter ride segments (sprints, short rides up to 1 km) that were not part of a much longer ride. My favorite segments are the ~25 second sprints, e.g. in the 300 to 400 meter range. That distance/time feels a lot like the track and field sprints that I do (100 meter and 200 meter). Here are some tips that have worked for me in getting fairly decent ride times:
    - as you pointed out, know very precisely where the segment starts and ends. It is so easy to lose fractions of a second near the start and end points if you don't maximize your effort within the segment limits
    - maximize the velocity of your flying start in all ways possible. This may include timing stoplights (if there is a light where the segment starts), entering the segment from a different part of the road if it avoids a sharp turn into the segment start area, etc. Always take advantage of a downhill stretch if one exists prior to the segment start point.
    - intense concentration on pedaling effort during every fractional second of the run. I find that I'm more aware of the use of my calf and shin muscles during a brief hard sprint. I also try to maximize my use of arm strength when accelerating.
    - take advantage of a tailwind whenever possible.
    - make your body more aero as your speed increases, esp. later in the segment, including dropping down and pulling in your elbows
    - *even more* power, regardless of your current power level

I know this is old but just seeing it now. Much respect for not drafting to get that local crown. And a tie is great! Sharing is caring 👑

    1. Cool guest!! 2. Was that your first try? You only showed 1 try so I assumed you were about to do it again. 3. You consistently have a smudge/fingerprint/ blurry spot on your GoPro frame in the very bottom right corner. 4. Congrats on tying the KOM! Seeing as GPS is only accurate to within 7 meters, a tie is fine.

      1. Yeah Thomas is great. He literally wrote the book on racing tactics. 2. Not the first. I did a 80% run prior to open up and I actually came back a few days later to get the chesty footage b/c one camera we used didn’t capture so needed more. 3. Fixed that damn thing a few hours ago after noticing it in the video. I think it’s from my new camera though not the GP. I’ll clean em all anyway - thx Bobby! 4. Thanks! I was happy with the tie. Next summer maybe I’ll try again but that’s enough for now!

Nice effort! And all this just for 12 seconds 🙉 I am currently working for a 55 min segment.. my gap to KOM: 6min! 🤦🏼‍♂️

@@notreally2406 I agree, a 12 second segment is a bit of a joke, compared to longer ones or ones that are really steep...

Gotta consider cadence in pedal strokes right? My ideal sprinting cadence for top speed is about 140-150. Gotta figure out the right gearing to hit top speed at that cadence.

Just wait for a day with a decent tailwind and let it blow.

Lol that always fails me. Just about every time I attempt a segment with a strong tailwind it magically disappears and occasionally turns into a headwind.
