We held my sister's baby dragon from the night she got it, ignored all the advice to allow her to settle in, she is now a cuddle bug 3 years later.

I rescued a bearded dragon that was abandoned on the streets in my neighborhood. I know for a fact she was out on her own in Texas heat and storms for the minimum of 2 weeks but no one technically knows how long. She was pretty much wild and extremely defensive. When I bought her home I made sure she had everything she needed. I have 20+ years of experience with snakes and lizards. I agree with you 100% on the steps. I just want to add be confident. I had to let her calm down before I even tried to handle her (first 24 hours) but that whole time I talked to her, I did everything you talked about. Once she showed signs of acceptance I would take her out around bed time and let her lay on me while I relaxed on the couch. That was within 3 days. I've had her 9 months and she is the sweetest and I trust her with everyone that comes over to my house. My next steps are walking around outside with her. That's going to be interesting this spring/summer. Can't wait but those steps are important.

So I have a question, I have a baby bearded dragon she's a month old, but is it normal for baby beardies to be more skiddish and aggressive about handing? My baby beardie just runs from me when I try to pick her up and when she's done running she'll turn around and open her mouth like she's about to bite me. Though when I pick her up she's perfectly fine and doesn't do anything skiddish or aggressive. So is that normal or am I doing something wrong?

I got my beardie in feb, he was tiny. I handled him every day multiple times for the first couple months, I started work & couldn't handle him as much, he then hated me! For months I've been working on getting him to let me hold him, he used to get really mad, today was the first time I was able to semi hold him (I had a washcloth over my hand) & he climbed right on me. I didn't take him out but held him inside his house.. we're slowly getting there. But it does take a while. I've managed to get him out before but he freaked out & I was scared of him biting me.

Perfect timing. I’ve had my girl Bumpy for a month now and she’s still unsure about me. She’s 5 months old now. It seems I’m still earning her respect. She seems curious while looking at me from her enclosure but quickly runs when I try to hold her. But, she’s eating from tongs regularly, and basks most of the day so she seems healthy and happy so I guess I just have to be patient. A question I have though is that when she runs from me, should I try to be more aggressive and go after her so she gets used to me holding her? Or should I keep doing what I’ve been doing and just stick to small head pat wins until she trusts me more? I want to be patient but I also want to be able to handle her so I can clean her enclosure more often and give her baths to help with shedding.

I would start handling your dragon around bedtime. It's normal for bearded dragons to be skiddish at that age. Just make sure if she decides to run that there is no big fall. My girl loves to jump from the couch to the floor so I'll lay a few pillows down.

Good tip thanks! I’ll try when she’s sleepy. I’ve had success when she’s just waking up but Ive been missing that window recently. Her bedtime is just before my 2 year olds bedtime so it’s tricky timing but I’ll give it a go!

Our little boy Elliott came home three and a half weeks ago. On the first day when we met him he came straight to us and my gf and I took this as a sign of both curiosity and friendliness. Apparently it was just curiosity, lol. Three weeks later he has started hissing at me when I go to remove him from his canopy for feeding time. Most times during morning feeding he does not come down for his food, unless he missed dinner, so I carefully grab him to bring him to his enclosures substrate. He then starts hunting his dubias and mealworms. Anyway, the first week I did leave him alone and then gradually started working with him. Last week I started bringing him out and onto the couch with us. He is now almost 12" and was 9" three weeks ago (wow) and has gone from 0.8 oz to 2.5 oz in 21 days. He will lay on our chest on the couch with his eyes closed, but not for very long before he wants to dart away. It is easy to see that they are not very naturally tame creatures, but can get there with time. I just hope the recent hissing at me doesn't mean I am doing something wrong. My GF and I really love him and we have gone a long way to making his home the best it can be. Anyway thanks for the amazing amount of information you have been providing us.

hold it in a room by your self and once you get comfortable with your dragon. you can then eventually bring in your car and let your cat get close with your handling

So these steps would work for a bearded dragon who is about 6 months old according to the shop and who was never really handled ? Long story short , I got him from a local shop for free , he was returned for whatever reason , is highly skiddish and you can tell he was never really handled. Only had him going on two weeks now, every time I get close I get the flared out beard and hissing. (I’m basically new at this) I’ve had a dragon about 16 years ago , a baby one who sadly didn’t do well and never got any bigger then 5” but I was also young, had no money to provide the proper equipment. This time around I’m completely set up for success lol. Just need to break this guys anger issues!
