- Today, I go over my "techniques" for working with grumpy or defensive bearded dragons, and how to eventually get them to a fun, friendly lizard that can get along with just about anyone! What are your tips for getting reptiles that bite, hiss or just run away to actually become a friend of humans?

Hey, good job on the videos. I just wanted to share a thing I tried and that you might have the opportunity to try way more than me. When watching a film or any activity where you don't really move, get a blanket, and put the beardie on you, under the blanket. If it's tired it might work better, but globally the purpose is to make him sleep with your scent, then waking up already on you. They get that if you didn't attack them in their most vulnerable state, why would you now ? Of course there's still the work to make them not scared of those damn moving hands, but it helps kinda fast with handling / being on you. Once again, I've not as many beardies, and not as crazy as this one =)
You should’ve renamed it “How to Tame Your Dragon”

Okay I don't know what his thing with, "It's kinda cute," though, it is kinda off
You have misquoted him and clearly do not understand the defining factors one must possess to be a psychopath. The actual quote is: "Basically they (the bearded dragons) try to act all angry and scary, but in reality you just like look into their eyes and then you just see fear and it's kinda cute, it's like awww and I don't know you just kind of feel bad when it's like they're just so innocent they're just trying to stay safe while they freak out like this." Which demonstrates empathy and compassion in a non violent display, the complete opposite of the characteristics of a psychopath. You do not deserve those likes based on a misquote and a labelling of someone with such an unjustifiable term.

They are a bearded dragon. They don’t understand the concept of gender. Pronouns don’t matter.
I do this with my female dragon every day. I've had her for 3 years. Hes a good boy, she really is.

“Telling them to calm down doesn’t work” no, no it does not 😂☠️ I’m always misled by how “dog-like” my dragon is...until he doesn’t respond to my voice commands 😂😂😂
This is me with my bluey. He loves cuddles, he scratches at the glass for attention, etc. He is the damn golden retriever of herps.
But about every four days something happens where I am like, "oh. Not an actual pupper. Still a reptile. Yup."
My beardie seems to know some words. It's weird she's strangely intelligent. >.>
Oranges' n' Grievers Beardies can learn to associate certain words with certain things. However they don’t really respond to tone of voice the same way as mammals do. Like I can meet a random dog and say “here Buddy, here Buddy” in an inviting tone and even if the dog has never learned that, they will likely rush over to me with their tail wagging. I’m sure reptiles can respond to tone to a certain extant (and loudness for sure) but definitely not as well as non-human mammals.
And yeah it’s a good idea to train your beardie to respond to words! I don’t have a beardie (yet) but if I did I’d probably say “good morning” when I wake up, “hello” when I approach the enclosure, and something dumb like “yum yum” before I bring out the food lol.
Cat Splat that’s so funny, because I actually have the opposite experience with mine! 😂 he doesn’t know words, but he definitely knows when I’m being extra “cutesy” and baby-talking him versus when I’m being regular...or even if I’m not in a great mood (which isn’t directed at him-he will just noticed and he won’t really wanna be touched or handled)
Honestly, reptiles are sooooooooooo individualized that we all could’ve each gotten a dragon from the same hatch and they will all respond to the same things differently. It makes them all so cool! No wonder there are hobbyists haha
Thank you all for your responses (: they were great to read! Love hearing about people’s beardies

back in February i adopted a milk snake that was nearly dead, was only fed every few months, was constantly laying in a tub of stagnant water and HATED people being near her.
i decided she was the one when i first got her out and she just didn't have the energy to really do something about it, so the next day i took her home and ever since ,maybe 2 months after i got her, she has been an absolute sweetheart, only whips her tail about when you make her jump, and to this day has never bit me on purpose (only when she misses her food).
all in all she's lovely to work with and i don't regret getting her for a second. I just wish she was never in the situation she was in before and never had to experience almost dying of starvation.
i also had a similar experience with neglected beardies who are now demanding to come out for a cuddle every day and running around chasing the dog so they can have her toys (i have 2 females and they love each other, they are sisters after all)

So glad I don't follow that guy, I watched two of his videos and his attitude to his reptiles were so obviously unprofessional and harmful to the animals in his care that I immediately unsubscribed. All I can think is he has many kids, teens and adults who simply don't know what decent care of reptiles looks like. Even his behaviour towards his family in videos was stomach-turning. Glad I never have to meet him.
@@MsCherade9 I couldn't agree more. He is massive cringe. I have also heard people say that the animals they got from him were riddled with mites and other health issues. Not surprising given the state of the drawers he shows on camera when he messes with a snake.

I have two rescue dragons, one is so gentle and loving. The other is pretty wild. It's a lot like adopting a dog, they're all unique and their backgrounds are all different.
I’ve been bitten by a Beardie and it’s definitely respectable. It happened during feeding, and certainly was my mistake, but I suspect that the nature of the bite would’ve been different if he was agitated.
Same. Mine was eating a strawberry, and he bit me on two fingers twice. Its like someone pinching you lightly.

Mine has hated me from day 1. He’s a rescue and was in awful shape when I got him. Missing most of his tail and about 5 toes. He bites me constantly. I have tried these techniques and I’ve given up. His enclosure is dope with lots of enrichment but I’m bummed I can’t really take him out. He’s so savage he chases the cat.
Avery Harte sorry to hear that. You seem like a kind person. How is he doing now?
@@analogkid4957 health-wise he is great. He has finally started eating greens. Turns out cactus was the game-changer. He has grown substantially and is a good size. Behaviourally, he still hates my guts. I am able to bathe him pretty well but getting him in and out of the enclosure is almost a guaranteed bite
My dragon is like this, he came from a really neglectful home and my ex roommate who owned him did a horrible job at taking care of him after “rescuing” him, so thank you I needed to watch this cause he is VERY “aggressive”, literally will chase me around my room even tho I’m like 100x his size he also REALLY hates it when I do my makeup 🤣🤣
It's a lot like parenting, if you show your dragon that they can push you around they will. Try showing your hand to them with food in it so they can connect your hand with food and show you are not a threat. Leave the dragon be when you place its food down to show you mean no harm. Soothing words and slow actions when a dragon is angry is the best way to go. Gently pet its head and body until it relaxes a bit more and do that at least once or twice a day presumably after feeding. It will take awhile but your lizard child will come around. Hope this helps a little! Been trying to do research about dragon behavior and this is what I scrounged up😅😅
When you realize this was 2 months ago and is probably useless help😅😅😅😅
@@hunternyx4462 hi, this is helpful! I just bought a baby beardie (maybe 1 month old) and I need help. I can't tell if he like me or not and if I'm handling him right. It's been just over a week so I just started the bonding process so any advice will help!
@@rachelmatthews1157 lol that's funny I just got mine this week! His names hollow and hes very shy and jumpy I've been so freaked out about it because hes also still very weary of me😅 have you tried taking him out of his terrarium and holding him yet? Or have you only been petting him in his home?
@@rachelmatthews1157 it's going to take about a month for your baby to get used to you and stop being so flinchy but he should warm up to you. I usually take my beardie out once a day, twice if hes in a good mood. And I'll let him relax on me for about 15 minutes. I'll pet him consistently and he usually falls asleep and refuses to go back into his tank afterwards lol. I find he tends to back up sometimes when hes scared if he does that keep your hand behind him so he dosent fall. Dont put your hand over top and force him to stay put like the kid in this video did. It will only freak him out more. Keep petting him and quietly talk to him if hes getting a bit upset. Should calm down if he acts up to the point where u cant keep him in your hands put him back into his tank and slowly work your way back up to holding him by petting him. Just show him your love and he will feel it and trust you. Hope this helps a bit.
As someone who chills with wild caught lizards pretty much every time I go outside, I actually do the same thing to help calm them down and be less stressed.

Thank you for specifying angry rather than aggressive 💜
...Exactly my experience with my beardie. After three years he and I have an understanding, but that understanding is mostly 'don't touch me and we're cool'.
I wanna see an update video of what she’s like when she’s tamed
If she’s not sold by then idk
Watching you crawl around after a huffy dragon was literally the best I've seen all day haha,, love your videos
I Love how informative you videos are. you've helped me help my reptile to actually thrive, instead of just survive. for that, I thank you
When my beardie opens his mouth I just pet his beard and then he's completely fine
Great vid. Wrapping them in a blankey also helps.
I picked out my beardie because he was the douche in the group. Love taming animals!
It’s good that you did that, because most won’t buy animals like that. So you may have saved that little beardie and gotten him a home!
do you have any suggestions that weren't included in this video?
I'm happy my boy (seems) to love me. I just recently helped my sister, who rescued an adult bearded, socialize her. She wasn't aggressive by any means, but she certainly wasn't used to being handled. She's the sweetest thing now. Gosh I love beardies!
Bearded Dragons are adorable when they're angry- worked with a bunch of angry ones that were rescued. I helped calm them down... No matter how angry they are, I've found overall, they're one of the easiest ones to calm down, and one of the easiest to avoid being bitten by-
I have been bitten by large adult ones, not as bad as like, getting pinched by a hermit crab that won't let go- lol, it's a pinch- there was a little blood, but the pinch is what I felt more than anything- he bit, and released- he didn't hold on like Tokay Geckos do.
Give me a large beardie bite over a large tokay bite! (Though I'd prefer not to be bitten at all of course!)
I find joy in taming feral cats or animals that have lost trust in humans. It such rewarding work and I recommend for any animal lover to volunteer at your local shelter.
I love calmer animals, but I'm stuck with my lovely Red Ear Slider, so I guess I'm stuck with a wiggly girl forever haha
Waiting til they go to sleep to get them out and cuddle has worked with ours! But as you've said, it might not work for all beardies.
My ball python hatched in April and he’s a little jumpy noodle. He’s false striked at me a few times :(
Did you hatch him? Because if not maybe his breeder didnt handle him
Dont be afraid they bites aren't that bad lol
Ty for your advice but I’ve gotten him to calm down :>
When they're babies, don't even worry about the bites. A papercut would hurt more. My ball python is a little skittish still even after months of having him. So whem I pick him up, I let him know I'm there, and then set him in my lap and allow him to calm down and uncurl before actually picking him up.
Once your little snake pal is slithering all around they're officially in Friendly Mode.
Show him who's the boss! Boop him on the nose and say no firmly lol I used to do this with my bearded dragon when he wouldn't "listen", he turned into a very good boi and smart too
You are a hoot! I really enjoy watching your videos. My grandson, 18 yrs old, took in a young bearded dragon rescue. Poor little thing was so bad off that it lost a right hand and foot. I'm so proud of my grandson cause Miss Lizzie is now thriving and so happy. You provided a lot of excellent info for him. Now I'm hooked too!
Face hugs are the ultimate goal for taming a reptile.
5:04 "But it's also nice to not bleed everywhere." I dunno, but *I* thought it was funny.
As a women I can confirm it is not very fun the bleed everywhere
My dragon bit me twice when I first got her because I reached in without warning and I didn’t even realize she bit me. It was the TINIEST pinch and I looked at my finger and saw the calcium residue in the shape of her bite 😂
also really weird amount 7 months into having her, she was on the floor then just randomly didn’t recognize me when I went to pick her up and puffed her beard out and opened her mouth. Kinda freaked me out cause it was the first time I saw her like that. I just threw a small blanket over her and picked her up. Then she recognized me again. So odd. Kinda cute when they’re mad tho 🥺
My bearded dragon bit me cause he thought I had food in my hand, tore my glove and some skin.
To be fair the gloves were thin, but damn.
Mine did the same thing except i didnt have a glove on
Understandable, those teeth look like a serrated blade.
@@animeaunty Yeah. But a serrated blade cant cut without going back and forth of course. So usually by the time they bite and realize it's not food, you'll just have a sore hand. Of course there are exceptions but they're so small and everything, it's hard for them to get through humans.
*the amount of times my beardie has chewed on my finger is quite awkward*
Cosmoni YT
Dont worry, I grew up n a herp family. Mostly snakes tho.
It's the pull back that gets ya. Either u or the animal pulls back just a little then those tiny serrations cut.
Defensive bites are actually less painful than food-driven bites
What a great thing emerald scales and you do! I got my first bearded recently and pet stores 100% do not prepare people for the level of care these big lizards need. It's amazing someone like you puts in this great work!
I got bitten once because I fed him and he accidently bit my finger, but it didnt really hurt, just for like 2 seconds, cause they have so much power in their jaws, but I didnt bleed or anything, so ... its just a little jumpscare lmao😂 but not more 🙃
I had mine chase a tomato for a bit. Ended up biting on my finger. Drew a lot of blood...

The bio teacher I aid for actually has three beardies and the newest female, Tiana, was super fun for me to work with because she was alot like the female shown in this video. But the sad part was she was not well cared for nor feed and was super dirty. I started by handling her for a couple hours at a time everyday coupled with leafy green feedings and giant mealworms. I did this for about a week before giving her a bath and after the first bath she really started warming up to me and I got to say that was probably the most awesome part. Now, a couple months later, she growing some fat and eating well! Good job with this female!
The cutest moment was when he rested his cheek on the beardie with the sweetest smile, but said, "This is scary." hahahaha!
During all my time researching prior to actually getting a boa, I always heard from people that the babies are fiesty and sometimes nippy and crazy before you work with them. At first I was apprehensive about it, but after reading about taming techniques in reptile forums and other places I started to get on board with the idea. The thought of actually calming down a defensive neonate after patiently working at it sounded pretty rewarding, and I had always thought that energetic babies were cute - just look at little blue tongued skinks, so adorable! Maybe I just got lucky, or it was due to the breeder I got him from (I'm not sure if they interact with the babies before selling them) but my boy came home calm and curious and though he's definitely gotten more comfortable with me over time, he was never frightened enough to attempt to strike me or even hiss. As I'm thoroughly in love with reptiles, I'm sure I'll end up getting another one down the road, and we'll see if I end up with an individual requiring a little extra effort to become tame. Thanks for the tips, another great video!
this was very helpful thank youuu, i’ll be showing him some gentle parenting. i had just been leaving him alone a bit thinking i’d annoyed him. 😅
My beardie is only a few months old, and I've had her for not quite 2 months, but I've been having a hard time trying to get her used to me. She's so jumpy, and I've been letting her tantrums win and leaving her alone more than I should!
I watched this (and more!) videos before I got her, but it's so helpful to come back and rewatch to get reminders. Thanks so much for your guidance!
I thought he said “you walk up to the enclosure and they immediate poop in their mouth” and I was like, ummmmmmmmmm
Another way of taming reptiles (lizards usually) that I've heard of is to get a sweaty sock of your own and put it in one of their hides so they associate your scent with safety and comfort. I'm trying it with my angry Amazon tree boa. It's bites feel like a crackhead improvised their used needles as a shiv.

And now she is a perfect angel.

I adopted a leopard gecko maybe over a year ago (probably 8 months idk I suc at memorizing) She has ALWAYS been super fearful and almost bit me a couple times. She was heavily abused before she was taken to a rescue. She was attacked by a cat and lost her tail, she never had the correct heating, also someone took her from a home in attempt to "rescue" her and ended up making it worse if not just as bad. They put her in a shoe box with play sand and fed her... apples... or tried to. They finally gave her to a LEGIT rescue! Now that I have her, shes been alot more social, still doesn't enjoy being handled but shes been a good girl :) I adore her so much...

HOW HAVE YOU NEVER BEEN BIT?
(My sister's bearded dragon is very, well, ain't the sharpest tool in the shed. He will bite anything that moves especially fingers thinking it's food. Tongue aiming for it and all.)
My beardie is the sweetest thing, until you put her in a bath. Then it's chaos 😩
Great job! I used to raise iguanas as a teen and now I’m looking for a starting lizard for my 4 year old and considering a bearded dragon.
I love learning about reptiles from you. Thank you so much. Love Chicago grandma
I’m “watching” this with my angry beardie
