Generally speaking, English words of latin origin are more formal than words of Germanic/Anglo Saxon origin, though that really only helps if you speak a latin-based language. For example: comprehend is more formal than understand, depart is more formal than leave, etc.

I can only speak english and I have lived in english-spoken countries my whole life but I suck at it! I feel so dumb. I just started my first week of university by the way so now I'm practicing academic writing and preparing for my 2 hour english diagnosis test. Thanks for the help
Same! I recently moved to Asia, and I read one of my classmates' writing and I realized that their writing was better despite me growing up in an English-speaking country.
what an illuminated opinion. Tell us more, caveman. How should we write scientific papers? Like this maybe? "Yo bros! Yes, YOU reading this shit. I don't wanna bore ya too much so I'll make it quick, easy peasy lemon squeezy, alright? So, we put a bunch a bunch of people on this cool new drug for a month to see what would happen and maan the results were bad! I mean, look, me and my science buddies we had no idea it could fuck up a person and stuff. I think someone should try to do it again and see what happens. Science, biatch"
@@giovanbattistafichera8439 Your example is a massive hyperbole. Of course rationality and objectivity are requiered to write an essay, however, it should be not *necessary* to use specific vocabulary or the passive ways instead of a lot easier variant like writing with normal vocabulary (to get instead of to obtain) or simply using the active, due to the fact that it does not affect any comprehension.
Muy buenas recomendaciones, sé cómo redactar en español de manera académica, pero jamás había investigado cómo hacerlo de manera adecuada en inglés. ¡Muchas gracias!
The whole purpose of writing or speaking or using language is to communicate effectively. If the word help is more appropriate for my style of communication, I will use it irrespective of the word being formal or not, because it satisfies the sole purpose of communicating effectively. We should focus on understanding the message of the sender rather than focusing on formal/informal type of communication.
This is not a contraction. The apostrophe that is used for "one's" makes it possessive, which is not a shortened version of a group of words (contraction).
I can't understand why spoken and written language is different. Why can't i just write what is on my mind? This is so weird. I wonder if there is a language where you write just like you speak.
I really don’t see how a person can avoid using I, me, or my. Sure it works in the example he gave but how would I say something like, she gave me a hat or I went to class? I can’t simply remove me or I like he did in the example.

How so? They are the basic rules, and is taught in uni? Sure this may be broad, but if you know nothing about academic writing, this advice will likely make your writing just a bit better than before. And better is more suitable than not better lol. If you have more advice to say, say it, don't place unnecessary doubt in the viewers' minds.
@@josephhorgan6543 Four key principles 1. Write the way you speak-the prime directive-then polish the draft message. 2. Write for specific, busy readers-make sure the story interests them. 3. Think, write, and edit separately-they involve different parts of the brain and don’t mix well. Work with biology, not against it. Write a first draft with no edits. 4. Get to the point at the start-in sentences, paragraphs, and documents. Append secondary information to avoid clutter. Two key tools 1. Be concise at macro and micro levels-restate essential points and cut the rest. Use fewer words, shorter sentences, and shorter paragraphs. 2. Use active voice-does your document say who must do what? If not, it may use passive voice and hide the responsible party. Plus several supporting tools that I won't list here. One example: 1. Use pronouns, contractions, short transition words (still, also, so, but, thus, yet) and conversational style to improve and humanize the tone and reduce formality. We disagree on many writing concepts. For example, formal writing does not convey meaning well. It's sludge. Good writers avoid it: Darwin, Einstein, Adam Smith, Lincoln. Contractions are useful. Big words not so much. Maybe you use utilize and assist. I just use and help. The goal is to convey meaning clearly, so readers focus on that, without getting lost in confusing language.

Be formal = use formal language
Things to avoid :
----------------
1) no contractions
- cant wont didn't
- cannot , will not , did not
2) No slangs or informal expressions
-stuff , Awsome, ...etc.
3) Avoid the use of the first person
- I , me, my
- So how to express yourself ?
- I think cellphones should be banned from classrooms ❌
- cellphones should be banned from classrooms ✔️
How -->The reader already know that you express your opinion "more objectivity"
Why -->The reader should focus on your idea more than you
4) No personal examples
- experiences from your life
- things and situations happend to your friends
5) Avoid Addressing the reader directly
- Dont use the word "you" too much
Ex/ if you want to succeed , you should follow this process
-too causal
Ex/ following this process will increase one's chances for success
6) No overly emotional language
- If the reader think you are emotional then you are being irrational ,therefore your argument is not valid
7) No over generalizations
-the use of words like (every, none, All)
Ex/ everybody knows that smartphones are useful
*Not fully true even if there is only one person who dont agree with that
8) No statistics without proper reference
- Dont put a percentage in your essay unless you know where it came from "reference"
Things to do instead :
-------------------------------
1) use the passive voice
- impersonal , objective
- it removes you from your ideas
- quiet successful
Ex/ It is believed by some that the wide spread use of technology in daily life is affecting the way people interact with one another
2) Use Academic vocabulary
- Bad --> Harmful , determintal
- Help --> facilitate

Perfect and useful! I also would add the simple rule "to avoid abbreviations". Btw instead of by the way, asap (as soon as possible) and so on. :)
2018 and still relevant. Being an academic is detrimental instead of bad look what I just used.
This is great, definitely something to use. However, pathos can still be used in formal writing. You just have to be good at it.
