    Thank you so much for making this video. If you can imagine, I am going back to school at an older age in my life. I went to a technical high school. English was not what they really focused on. Writing essay’s was never something we did. Thank you again for your calming voice, and easy explanation of how to finish my essay. Have a blessed day, and thank you for sharing this with all of us. 💜

    A paragraph must have 3 parts:
    1. Topic Sentence - It gives the main idea of the paragraph.
    2. Supporting Sentences - It develops the main idea by giving examples and explanations.
    3. Concluding Sentences - It gives closure to the paragraph.
    Example of a good topic sentence: Taking too many university courses at once can have serious consequences.
    - The topic sentence has a clear topic and a main idea.
    Traits of a good topic sentence:
    1. It must not be too specific (e.g. a fact or evidence).
    2. It must not be too broad. The sentence must have a main idea.
    3. Topic must not be annouced. Instead, state your opinion or the main idea.

    When you say "every paragraph" has three basic components, you mean a "typical" paragraph, correct? Paragraphs can have an implied main idea (i.e., no topic sentence) and, if it has a main idea sentence, it can be anywhere in the paragraph. I'm a reading instructor, and it's often a struggle to help students understand these concepts because they learn in their writing courses that they must "always start a paragraph with a topic sentence."

    • @shaunmacleod2371
      @shaunmacleod2371 9 років тому +9

      Snap Language That's correct, yes; there will always be exceptions to the typical format. And I tell my students the same thing; while a paragraph's main idea is often found in the first couple sentences, it is not an absolute. When looking for the main idea of a paragraph you are reading, it is important to keep in mind that experienced/professional writers can place a topic sentence anywhere they like and are not restricted by the conventions of essay writing. When teaching language learners how to write a paragraph, however, I strongly encourage them to include a clear topic sentence to help them focus their ideas. Thanks.
