  • This is a really interesting dry fly that ive tied quite a few times for a customer of mine named Andrew. Very nice fellow, and this is one of his go to patterns that catches him tons of brown trout. The CDC tuff keeps this on top of the water, and im guessing it looks like a struggling spider. However I don't know exactly. It seems to work wonders for him. I did not come up with this pattern, I believe its one commonly used in Europe somewhere. However I had no problem tying it for him when he asked me to. He goes out to Ireland and fishes there regularly, and would stock his box up at a fly shop out there. However since Covid, he has not had a chance to go visit in a while. So I provide him with the flies he has confidence in. Very interesting pattern, one I will have to give a go with next time im out trout fishing. He fishes up in Connecticut and the surrounding area up there.
The www.risenfly.com hooks are excellent hooks. Don't let the low cost throw you, they really are superb hooks, especially their barbless series. Best thing though is they are only $4 for 25 of them. And you even get an additional discount if you use my discount code. McFly at checkout will get you an additional 15% off anything they sell in their shop. They have great prices on beads as well, and even fly gear like rods and reels. So go check them out!

I'm from Connecticut and I can't wait to fish this pattern in the Farmington River. I grew up on this River and fishy flies work well even without being a imitation of a natural.

I’ve tried this fly in size 14 for a Japanese native trout (Amago) who’s heavily spooked by the ordinary parachute pattern- and wow they’ve grabbed the soft hackle dry fly without any hesitation! This fly definitely will be my secret weapon, thanks for sharing this !

Green Caddis Outfitters sells very good hooks for $ 4 for 25 these days they been selling them for $ 2 for 25. I have been tying on their dry fly hooks for a while now. The only downside is they don't seem to go down in size below a 20. Here where I live, in CT we will go down to a 24 or 26 during the season. You have gotten a lot better at fly tying by the away. Interesting fly, kind of like a crippled emerger. # 14 Adams works really well here, along with a # 16. I think that one in a # 16 might be even more effective.

Yes there are some decent hooks for a good price everywhere. I will say, ive used tons of discount hooks in the past and these are by far the best ive used. Not saying others aren't good though. And I think thats as small as Risen hooks go down to also. Its hard to find the 26 and smaller. I really like Gamakatsu hooks for the 26-30 size. They are pricy but, some of the best micro hooks out there.

Looks like a nice all around dry pattern for trout, thanks for sharing this. Having grown up dry fly fishing in northern New Mexico, I know this pattern will work well. Trout don’t have a lot of time to size up a moving fly and this pattern looks like a variety of floating insects.

Cool! I hope the instructions were helpful. When I first tried tying these I couldn’t find anything other than some pictures.

That is a soft hackle dry fly from Jonathan Barmes from on-stream guide in Europe.

Yes it might be. I forgot who it was that came up with it but they were from Europe. A friend and customer of mine fishes in Ireland a lot. But after the pandemic couldn’t get these anymore. So he asked if I could tie them for him. Seem to work great for him.

Two tails would indicate a May fly but one from another planet?

HAHA! For sure! Yeah it can, not really sure honestly what its supposed to mimic but it seems to work wonders for him.

We have wet flies called spiders in Britain. They are an old fly. Basically just like your video but without a wing so not dryfly. They called spiders but certainly not meant to represent spiders, but mayfly or sedge. They are believed to be taken by the fish for being drowned adult duns or possibly emerging nymphs.

For sure, we fish those also, great flies!
