    Hi Jon

That is an interesting pattern, I am always on the look out for new ways to tie flies. My local home stream is a tail water stream and it sees a lot of fisherman and flies, the same old same old dose not work as well as in the past. I took up Czech Nymphing just for this reasoning to add to my bag of tricks. The fishing is tough but it will get tougher from mid to the end of june on. I been fly fishing now for 52 years now, I have to say I have learned more from youtube in the last 4 years or so that I would have though. A valuable tool. So many streams to fish and so little time!

Good stuff! We tie mostly emerging mayfly patterns, but I think the theory would hold true and add a great dimension. I'm going to have to test that out on a poly-wing emerging pattern.

must be nice to have access to small streams with trout rising like that.

Hi- no you are doing nothing wrong! Once you add floatant to the front hackles and tie on tippet material it will sit nicely. No worries if the front soft hackles are "jingling" in the water anyway- Personally I'd be trying to achieve that effect. More on soft hackle dries in a mini feature coming soon- Magic March Browns.
    Cheers Jon

Jonathon Barnes......tell me what dun has about 30 legs?! One turn of only soft hackle should be enough to suggest 6 legs. No need to have a stiff genetic hackle......why do the soft hackle legs need support?! They would be more effective if had no support and allowed to move with freedom. Also, olive duns don't have furry, fat abdomens ........you don't know shit!!

Will the soft hackle dry (size 16) stay afloat when the little black spider is fished on the point or should I use a life jacket for the surface fly?
    Richard.

Have you tried this tied parachute style with a poly wing? Bet it would sting a tone of fish. Thanks for sharing. Gonna tie some up both style and see how the work here in Michigan.

Great looking fly Jon, I like the idea of using game bird hackles on dry flies, have you ever tied it parachute style?

    Hi Jon
I have tied up a couple of flies but when I've done a 'test run' with them i.e. dropped them into a glass of water, they appar to nose dive. By that I mean that they sit in the film hook-eye down. Am I doing something wrong?

Don't understand why you need a genetic hackle to support the soft hackle?!! Surely it would be better if it was just a soft hackle and would allow the legs more freedom to move! Also you say you think a tail is not important yet you include a wing for profile suggesting you think it's an important trigger for trout. How do you know what is important trigger for a trout? Certainly wingless dryflies like hoppers can be lethal! And no olive dun has such a noisy imprint as that.......they have 6 legs not about 30!!
