- Stimulators are a classic pattern that just works amazingly. It has been in the boxes of many dry fly fisherman since the 80's, and is still popular today. In fact its one of the most effective patterns for much of the west. It can mimic a stonefly or caddis. According to a few online sources (evergreentrout.org, and flyfishersinternational.org) it was created by Randall Kaufmann who loosely based his design off of the fluttering stonefly made by Jim Slattery, which itself was based off of a pattern called the sofa pillow by Pat Barnes in the 1940's which is very close to the stimulator we have today. So this pattern has been in some ways been developed and improved since the 40's.
Personally I like tying these in all black with red wire ribbing, this orange color, yellow, olive, and brown. They are all great colors to mimic specific forages in different rivers and seasons. I like to flatten the wing a little, as to not have it poof up as much as some you see online. The hackle choices also are important. I really like to down size the hackle for this fly, as it will sit better in the water that way, and in my opinion looks better.

Thank you
That trick you did with the thread when u whip finished is great!
Glad that it helped ya with future flies
Very nice tie. Like that dubbing that you used. Tweezers are my best friend for plucking out those broken tips. Cheers and keep these great videos rolling.
Thanks man
Outstanding as expected! There's a reason you are one of my favorite youtubers.
Thanks Aaron
Fly tying is so cool. I love watching it.
Thanks, yeah it’s a good hobby for sure

Thank you Richard, I appreciate the comment, glad you enjoyed the video.
A well-done, easy to follow presentation of an excellent fly. I add rubber legs in larger sizes for a very productive hopper pattern,
Yes the rubber legs stimulators are great! Thank you and I’m glad you enjoyed it
Nice job on the Stimulator Shawn. Looks perfect! Cheers
Thanks
Excellent video and instruction. Thank you.
Thanks
Helo i sit down and go to work ...beautiful fly🎣
Thanks.
Nice fly, Shawn. I took advantage of Risen’s sale this weekend to order an ITB 6WT rod. The ITB 4WT Deposit Program is still back ordered. 😢 The 6WT should cast further than the Genesis 7’6”’ 3WT while the fish are still
In deeper water in the Everglades (until the temperature stays warm consistently). Tight lines!
Good deal man, it’s a good rod. More moderate action, which I like a lot.
Это Классика. Не чего лучше нет и не будет👍👍👍👍👍
Pure talent!
Thank you
@@McFlyAngler can't wait to tie this it'll be my first dry. Dude I bought my first fly rod based on your review less than 3 years ago, now i tie some of your flies and fish them euronymphing up to 7 days a week... I'd like to return the favor so if you're ever in northern Michigan hit me up. I'm getting several rivers really dialed in and could definitely "guide" you on them, including the "Holy Waters" Au Sable river.
Stimulator is my go to dry fly for all wild trout fishing, especially westslope cutthroats.
Yeah one of my favorite patterns for when I was fishing small creeks and streams in Colorado back country.
Great fly, there may be enough hackle on that to float a VW Bug.
Yeah, haha! That’s the point of the stimulator. Floats high, great for dropping weighted flies.
Just like that but an orange body and sizes 4, 6, and 8 for Salmonflies.
For sure…. Any color combo or size works. These were orange body I tied. For sure can be tied larger
