    Funny thing about capacitors Ivan. They can wear out from several cycles of use and usually it is because they are being slightly over worked (over amped). Lastly they can point you in the direction of the cause of why they blew.

    Remove the cap, clean the juice off the board (it may be conductive which is worse) & repair the traces if they are eaten through. A replacement used ECM might run about $150-300 so worth a try with this older car. Fun to see your approach to this problem - I would probably have latched onto the working, then not working com aspect, which would have still ended up in the ecm. Thanks for the video!

    Nice team work, those kinds of electrical problems can be a nightmare. But i think the fact that the ecu works for a few seconds points to the electrical tracks being ok and its just that capacitor bringing the circuit down, i will guess the internal resistance of that cap is through the roof. I would certainly replace the cap, for what they cost - pennies, it's well worth it.

    electrolytic is probably a filter capacitor between the power rail and ground rail. just cut it out for proof of concept. it may be a little jittery but it should run. there is going to be a time when good cars go to scrap because the electronics are no longer available

    • @davesage9190
      @davesage9190 4 роки тому +1

      I agree 100%. Should have just cut it out and cleaned it up on both sides of the board. It probably would have come back to life. As you say good enough to prove it is the problem.

    • @JD-iu3vi
      @JD-iu3vi 4 роки тому

      Those type caps are usually for filtering noise. Since it would start and run for a minute after removing power it probably would not work without it either. The noise is causing the computer to have a brain freeze.

    • @davesage9190
      @davesage9190 4 роки тому +1

      Yes they are for noise reduction / elimination but usually there are several scattered around the circuit board all in parallel across the supply with not too much thought or serious design. (More is better). If the cap is shorted (like it probably was) or the contents of it's guts was (likely) causing a problem then removing it just for the purposes of seeing if the PCM operates differently is a good approach. If removing it is an obvious fix then a new one should be installed to fix it for the long run.
      BTW all the other similar caps should be changed as well. They are probably not far behind in failing.

    • @JD-iu3vi
      @JD-iu3vi 4 роки тому

      @@davesage9190 Most of what you said is true but not always. Obviously the cap was a filter for the communication part of the circuit. I have seen where one filter cap can affect only part of a total circuit design. I have even seen where replacing a 220uf with a 1000uf caused major problems. Main thing there is a lot of assumption about the cause/effect which we are all doing at this point. Without a schematic or circuit analysis/troubleshooting we don't really know do we?

      A lot of times it's the small caps in switching power supplies that cause them to stop working. The part of the circuit they were in hammered them with high frequencies causing the electrolyte to dry up causing high ESR.

    There is very little that can take down a Toyota...Leave it to an electrolytic capacitor. If this was your own car you could get in there with some jumper wires. I've seen old motor coil winding used since they have that thin insulation coating on it. Scrape each side of the bad spot and solder them on. Then change out the other caps. A used PCM will have the same issue. Maybe buy a used one and hope it's not as bad, change the caps, and then install it.
