  • For those of us who live our lives in the real world, there is one branch of philosophy created just for us: Stoicism. It’s a philosophy designed to make us more resilient, happier, more virtuous and more wise-and as a result, better people, better parents and better professionals.
    Stoicism has been a common thread through some of history’s great leaders. It has been practiced by Kings, presidents, artists, writers and entrepreneurs. Marcus Aurelius. Frederick the Great, Montaigne, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Adam Smith, John Stuart Mill, Theodore Roosevelt, General James Mattis, -just to name a few-were all influenced by Stoic philosophy.
    So what is Stoicism? Who were the Stoics? How can you be a Stoic? Bestselling author Ryan Holiday answers all your questions and more in this video.

      Stoicism has a unique way of grounding us and providing clarity in the chaos. It’s wonderful that it has brought such positive changes to your life, fostering both peace and success. Keep holding onto those principles; your journey is a powerful testament to the strength and tranquility that Stoicism can offer.

    After graduating, I faced a huge fear of unemployment, letting it cast a shadow over my achievements. Discovering Stoicism changed my outlook. I learned to flow with life’s currents, embracing challenges as part of my journey. This philosophy didn’t just help me navigate the job market with more peace; it transformed how I view life’s ups and downs. Now, I see each challenge not as a setback but as an opportunity to grow. Stoicism taught me the power of perspective and the strength we gain from facing our fears head-on.

    I see the need for journaling and handwrite, it really clears your mind. But I have a twist to it: once evaluated, analyzed etc. I ditch the page of the day. The following morning I will handwrite a new day, on a clean state. No need to keep the notes. This mentally removes clutter for me, my dailly agenda is only one page. To allocate activities in the future, I put them on Google calendar for months ahead, and computer notes app for week ahead, that can be consulted when required. But this way, it helps me really focusing on the day.

      It's such a powerful reminder, isn't it? That quote beautifully captures the essence of how our perceptions shape our reality. By taking control of our thoughts and actions, we indeed have the power to manifest our vision and transcend beyond the immediate circumstances. Shakespeare’s words, much like the teachings of Stoicism, encourage us to look within and realize our potential to create meaningful change in our lives. It’s all about embracing that power to craft our own narrative.

    Thank you Ryan, great job and awesome work. You have gotten me on the path of reading and Stoicism. Stoicism is the 12 steps of recovery but on steroids. And that is what I needed. I am currently reading Gates of Fire by Steven Pressfield and am loving every minute of us. It puts into perspective just how easy our lives are, and how we have no excuse but to pursue Arete/Excellence/Virtue. I am just a blue collar local class A delivery driver for a major beverage company but practice excellence and virtue day in and day out. It is certainly working for me and enhancing my life experience. I have read Discipline is Destiny, Courage is Calling and Stillness is the Key. I just ordered Lives of the Stoics today and Mastery by Greene. Keep up the awesome work Ryan, you are a great teacher/mentor. -Grant in San Diego

    What are the criticisms of Stoicism? That’s important to learn as well.

    • @LionStoic
      @LionStoic 5 місяців тому +1

      Stoicism has been criticized for its potential to foster emotional suppression, leading to a disconnect from authentic human experiences. Additionally, some argue that its emphasis on accepting external events as predetermined may promote passivity, hindering efforts to enact positive change in the world. Critics also point out a perceived lack of emphasis on empathy and social connection, suggesting that Stoicism's focus on individual virtue may overshadow the importance of understanding and engaging with the perspectives of others.

    • @LycorisThe
      @LycorisThe 5 місяців тому

      I’ll put it this way, a person that practices stoicism is probably not who you turn to when you want to feel better in a bad situation.
      They’re not able to look at things from that emotional perspective. Very Vulcan.

    • @X3000Chan
      @X3000Chan 2 місяці тому

      The main criticisms seem to come from the types of people who think that we shouldn’t help others at al, or do “what’s best for the hive” but that we should be selfish and only do what’s best for ourselves. This way of thinking goes against some core ways of thinking in Stoicism, as Marcus Aurelius said “What’s good for you the hive, is good for the bee.” The people who think that’s what’s good for me, is good for me, and no one else is necessary to consider; those people don’t seems to really like Stoicsm at sll.

    • @X3000Chan
      @X3000Chan 2 місяці тому

      @@LycorisThe Lol. Vulcan? Lol. C’mon. I can see that you don’t understand Stoicism. You should watch Ryan’s video on dealing with anxiety. He talks a lot about how the Stoics processed their emotions, and about how the Stoics did NOT stuff down their emotions but “put them to the test”, observed then, mulled over them, journaled about them. Stoicism is about being rational, practical, courageous, resilient, and accepting what you can’t control as simply something you can’t control, and grabbing the reigns and taking control of the things you can.

    My therapist keyed me into this page, and I'm liking some of it, but other things are a bit harder to take. I've always been impressed by those who are unruffled by life's speed bumps and wished I could be more like that, but never could be for long when I tried. The one thing that sticks out to me from this is a question I imagine a lot of folks looking into stoicism face, which is if from the 10,000 foot view, from the 10,000,000 foot view, from the 10 light year view, nothing is as significant as it seems, then how can anything have any significance at all? My problems don't matter, my successes don't matter, my actions don't matter, so why do anything? How can you find the motivation to act if there is no impact or import of those actions?
