Stillness is that quiet moment when inspiration hits you. It’s that ability to step back and reflect. It’s what makes room for gratitude and happiness. It’s one of the most powerful forces on earth.
In this video Ryan Holiday talks about some key Stoic practices that will help you find stillness.

@@marcop.3821 whoops! I’ll correct my list. Thank you.
Ryan Holiday is getting alot of criticism at the moment, but he is publicising the best and most useful parts of Stoicism. It's very impressive and indeed is a step forward in Stoicism (Stoicism isn't just something locked in the past, nor is it a rigoroualy defined creed.)
Epictetus: "We cannot choose our external circumstances, but we can always choose how we respond to them."

You're saving lives ...
Seeing this channel grow to so many Stoic subscribers is amazing. I can remember when there were approx 90k subs, and thinking "Why isn't this channel more popular?" But all that was needed is time and patience.
“Immersion makes the man. This is the shortest path to clarity.” (From Stoic Mosquito by A. A. Socrates)
Many thanks for the info in this video!
One of the best things I've found that helps with both my manic and my anger is going for walks. When my husband and I have a fight, and especially when we're at a point where we need to step away from each other to cool off because we're not getting anywhere and cooler heads prevail. I'll go for a walk. It helps get rid of my pent up 'manic/anger' energy and I can rant and rage and flail all while being outside getting good sunshine and fresh air and there's just something oddly comforting about how that no matter how much of your troubles you throw into the sky, there is still more than enough room for every football field in the world, the mall of america and three disneylands to spare.
Perfect timing: I'm currently reading "Stillness is the Key".
Yes.
Thank you Ryan
Stillness is the way!
Thank you Ryan 🙏🏼
Thank you as always, Ryan.
Ryan is my favourite!
Your videos really help
Always so inspiring.
Boa noite!

Great meditation to start the day! I beleive there was a whole school of philosophy founded by walkers- many label it as flaneurism/flanteurism or the peripatetics.
Awesome
I love the concept of stillness. 'Be still and know that I AM God' - Bible
What verse?

This is a very good video. Is there a one anywhere discussing how events in your environment can influence what you should think, or do, or enjoy from moment to moment? 🤔
Don't know about Ryan's, but listen to Massimo Pigliucci. I guess his Ted talk is a good place to start. Very nice description of what Epictetus said about the 'dichotomy of choice'
A change of ost works wonders.
I’ve been listening to your podcasts and read a lot of your material. Just had an incident that’s going to set me back a lot of money and struggling to accept it. Been back home after I broke up with my ex and living with parents now has just extended. Anyone have anything they can share with me to help?
Perhaps you were in a toxic relationship? You may want to look up Narcissistic Personality Disorder and the site Narc daily - you are not alone.
Your back in stack mode brother put your head down gym/work/gym/work put your head down and grind. Pop out this time next year you’ll have a new outlook. Anything your gonna do right now is going to be to emotional. Stay up 💪🏾
Be Grateful and love yourself, look into the mirror and tell yourself that you are alright and amazing and that you love yourself.Look yourself dead in the eye and say and mean that you're alright.Because you are.Start with gratitude.
Be patient with YOURSELF while your course is correcting. The process of change and refinement isn't always pleasant. If you've been listening and reading Ryan's material, as you've stated, now is the time to use it, and NOT all of it. This is the mistake that most make when they're hit with a challenge. Don't think that you have to work with every principle you've ever learned. This is COUNTER PRODUCTIVE! All you need is ONE WORD, ONE REVELATION of understanding to carry you into Higher Consciousness. Though you walk THROUGH the VALLEY (a low point) and the SHADOW of DEATH (the illusion of separation) fear no evil (that which is contrary to the truth of your Being. "Evil has within its own self the elements of self-destruction."
It's not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters. We cannot choose our external circumstances, but we can always choose how we respond to them.We cannot control the external events around us; we can control ourselves. It is not things that trouble us, but our judgments about things.
Regarding tony gonzalez statement: bill belichick has a losing record without tom brady... by quite a bit also after this year
Never forget the "reward" part of building habits... a lot of people want have insane habits, and disciplines but they forget the small reward of doing the habit...
Or even better, don't forget about celebrating everytime you do a habit and affirm yourself. That way you build an identity and the confidence grows as you practice the habit.
@@TreeEnjoyer yup I totally agree... I ate a cookie as a reward for waking up at 4AM, and since then never had a problem getting out of my bed :)... people rely on force too much, but I like the donkey and carrot approach lol
I’ve struggled to obtain/maintain stillness for the past week while suffering with RSV. I pray and journal but the frustration of not feeling healthy clouds any peace I try to have. Suggestions?
Seek for help. You have already done your part, my brave friend

This makes me so anxious because im exact opposite of these keys. Sad life
Well, you can change that over time :)

While I have embraced and largely practiced stoicism for many decades, I can’t help noting that this has become increasingly the domain of the affluent, or at least the comfortable seeking escape from the stress of modernity. While I know the basic concepts are valuable, it seems these days it often transforms into “naval gazing” amongst the affluent. It might be interesting for Ryan to give a seminar to a group of homeless people, and see how that lands.
You are very wrong my friend. Zeno was a merchant. Epictetus was a slave. And they were no fools, man
It is interesting why in New Testament Judas cared about poors. Seems it sells.
You are making my point. Stoicism now seems to be adopted and dominated by the wealthy and powerful --at variance with its humble origins. Ryan charges between 50 and 100 thousand dollars for a speaking engagement. Unlikely the common man or a group of homeless will be able to come up with that sum.@@josepsoler4124
A lot of similarities with Taoism

Watch local news, folks.
Avoid the national "get ratings" stuff in favor of the local team who is on even when it's slow and doesn't have to make stuff up to get you to tune in.

"great politicians" then shows Obama...eesh lol ... love the channel and Ryan's books tho
Yep, he lost me with that one.
Wrong.... While you're getting up early, I'm still sleeping. And then when you go to bed i'm still working doesn't matter if you get up early...
You are just working, you are going against the laws of nature. The nature has ordered us to wake up with the sun and sleep with the moon. You are just against the nature. No offence
He's such a fast talker and a blabbermouth.
