    Nearly two thousand years ago, Stoic philosophers were also trying to find peace.
    Marcus Aurelius, the Roman emperor, made it a point to spend time alone with his journal every morning before dawn. Epictetus, the former slave turned philosopher, admonished his students to constantly keep in mind that “Men are disturbed not by things, but by the principles and notions which they form concerning things.”
    For the Stoics, practicing philosophy was a necessity. Something they could constantly come back to to remind themselves what was in their control and help them view outside events with more detachment. And this is why the writings of the Stoics have endured for so long and continue to teach people from all walks of life how to be less reactive, more reflective, and more level-headed.

    Being a friend to your self, what a hard lesson to learn after only ever hearing criticism and negativity towards yourself from those you expect to love you. I think this is the hardest for men, as its rare to ever hear something positive said towards you as a man. You cant expect others to make you happy, its up to you to be happy anyway.

    The highest truth is this: The greatest thing we can do in this life is to suffer with joy.. Which is to absorb evil and give love in spite of what happens to us

    • @edmboi

      I partly disagree about absorbing evil. we don't need to be a vessel or endure it. but yes, give love.

    • @joemac84
      @joemac84 2 місяці тому +1

      @@edmboiWhat did Christ did on the cross, is what I meant by “absorb evil.” As was said by him, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” What if love were in fact the greatest force in the universe, even more, the very thing which created it and binds it together this very moment.. It is good to meditate on these things..

    "Being a good person. Doing good work. And focusing on what you can control." Hit home for me. When you're in the thick of life it's so hard to zoom out but for me, I want to remember to do my best to simply be a good person. From that I truly believe comes good work and allows one to take a proactive approach to the All! Thanks man. Honestly, thank you! 🙏

    I’ve followed stoic teachings for many years now and Ryan has been a great guide for me as I’ve faced extreme stress, heartbreak, divorce, loss of career and now the spectre of illness. I push myself to “do my best” in each situation I find myself in (though I don’t always manage it) so that I can live with myself and be a good role model for my sons. I don’t tell anyone about any of this and in the end I cling to two of Marcus’s quotes. “The obstacle is the way” and “I’m not afraid of death, I’m only afraid of not doing my best”.

I am grateful that I found this knowledge the past few months, and have been trying to learn and grasp the principals. I started reading Ryan's book The Obstacle is the Way, and it is so impactful and resonates with me! Peace to all people that want to be a Positive Force for Good in the World!

      Good job dropping a random quote with no added context or insight..... Let me do it for you.
      Maybe being alone and isolated is NECESSARY in seeking what's best for yourself. Maybe chasing that better version of yourself DEMANDS being alone, undistracted, and isolated. Maybe now is when you do your best work. So don't let the supposed loneliness bring you down, USE IT to your advantage! You got this! Just keep going

    Thank you so much Ryan. I have been helped so immensely by this “thought technology” as Merlin Mann would call it.
    Life cannot be appreciated without these practices, and so many of us would be oblivious to what has been figured out for thousands of years if not for your compelling words and passion.
    I burst out laughing when I saw Tom Segura talking about ego.
    I used to love Tom but he has no doubt become intolerably arrogant, ungrateful, and entitled over the past couple years. He is almost the antithesis of what you preach. He’s enormously successful and has a large audience, and that is a powerful siren you must resist Ryan. It’s like having a video about being self-aware and then including a quote from Trump.

I think if one practices these #atomichabits daily one can refine their #sensoryperception, #intuition, #freedom, #creativity, & #intelligence.
