I didn't even notice, I legitimately thought every human being acted like this...some were just better at hiding it...? I'm mind blown, and now I'm looking at this movie with new respect, it's so cool.
I can see that newt seems autistic but there's so many things wrong with this video: The puzzle piece symbolising autism is made by autism speaks, a very hurtful company that claims to protect autistic people while doing the opposite: dehumanizing autistic people calling them ruined and promoting violent methods to "handle" autistic people. Using the rainbow infinty symbol is better. Autism awareness was also made by autism speaks, and a lot of autistic people prefer autism acceptence or appreciation. Most people already know of autism but dosent accept it which make autism awareness useless. High functioning and low functioning labels are also hurtful and wrong, many prefer high need and low need to be used instead. Still thanks for making this video, ignoring these things it was really good /gen :D
As someone with high functioning Autism working in a special education school specializing in varying degrees of Autism, disability and mental illnesses such as bi-polar disorder, I disagree with these statements.
@@yderga8707 that’s cool that you disagree and all but the general public needs to listen to the majority of autistic culture regarding autism and the majority says that functioning labels are harmful because day time day needs can be different and for all you know, you’re mostly masking most of the time or maybe you’re in an environment that isn’t harmful to you personally but for a lot of autistic people, most environments are harmful in different ways which can have us depicted as “high/low functioning” when were really not and just overwhelmed by sensory input or are really good at masking to the point of they almost never unmask and therefore don’t feel the consequences that can come with masking.

@@nickstheory6610 Hello, autistic person here! :) Eddie Redmayne has said in interviews before that he believes Newt is on the spectrum, thanks to his early conversations with Rowling about the character. However, it would be impossible for him to be diagnosed at the time, as the term was first coined in 1938, almost a decade after these two films are set. It'll be interesting to see if autism will be discussed directly in the Fantastic Beasts sequels as they head into the '40s.

i think the eye contact thing is from the creatures hes dealt with. Hes so used to not being able to have eye contact with the creatures that it stuck with him
Interesting theory. I personally thought he is an introvert. And this funny behavior is, I thought, because of the animals, he wants them to gain trust by behaving like them🤔.
I agree with you. He seems like he approaches humans in the same way that he approaches his creatures. He tends not to make eye contact so as to appear non-threatening. He didn’t really strike me as socially awkward, he made good connections with everyone around him. He just believes that people find him annoying. I’d think he’s just an introverted Hufflepuff. Or an INFP personality type.
He can be an introvert and be autistic. Not all people with autism are low functioning and show that they’re autistic. I’m high functioning and most people don’t know I have autism because I mask. Most of the time you’ll think I’m just an introvert with social anxiety, which I am but I also have autism, I think his obsession with magical creatures is another autistic trait as many people with autism have special interests which is something they really get into and know a lot about.
@@rachelcookie321 How do you know that most people don't know you are autistic? Most people aren't going to ask if you are autistic or have a conversation with you about it, but that doesn't mean that they don't notice. And most people will tell you "really? I had no idea" or "I couldn't tell, you seem normal to me" when you tell them that you're autistic. They're just trying to be nice. I went to a salon the other day and there was a girl there that I'm positive was high functioning autistic but I didn't talk to her about it... Also, most people have special interests. What makes Newt's enthusiasm for creatures different from Hagrid's enthusiasm for creatures or different from a rabid sports fan's enthusiasm for sports or different from any person who has a passion in life?
@@signalfire15 because for most of my life no one knew I had autism. It wasn’t something that had crossed anyone’s mind because I looked and acted normally. When I got older though I started having meltdowns and that was what led to me being diagnosed. My parents has no idea, my friends had no idea before this. Everything I do that is autistic, I do inside my head. I hide these things from the world. If I hadn’t had meltdowns I probably would of never been diagnosed. My school councillor suggested I might have autism so I got tested and during the test I answered with the things I do inside my head and that’s how I got diagnosed. I could of answered not honestly and hid the stuff I did in my head and I wouldn’t of been diagnosed with autism because my actions weren’t obvious. Also not all high functioning autistic people are the same. You don’t just have high functioning and low functioning, it’s a whole spectrum. So the girl you saw was likely lower functioning than me because I’ve honestly never met anyone as high functioning as me. I broke down due to stress in year 9 and if it wasn’t for that, I likely wouldn’t of been diagnosed. You can definitely see a difference between Hagrid and Newt when it comes to their interest in magical animals. Hagrid loves animals, he cares for them and learns about them but they’re just like family members to him, Newt has an obsession with magical creatures, he’s made his whole life about learning about them and caring for them. Hagrid would still be Hagrid without the animals but Newt would be no one without them, he built his whole life around them.
@@rachelcookie321 I disagree about Newt. I don’t think he would be nothing without his creatures. Most creative people’s lives revolve around their careers because their careers are usually their passions. For example, a writer is usually obsessed with their writing. A musician is usually obsessed with their music. But there is nothing about Newt’s obsession with creatures that is different from any other person’s obsessions with their passions / career. I would believe Newt had an unhealthy special interest or obsession if he was unable to form friendships or bonds with other people and only bonds with creatures. But that has not been the case. Newt didn’t fit in and believes people find him annoying but he has managed to do well in human relations despite his special interest. He was able to befriend Jacob quickly, befriend Queenie, fall in love with Tina and Leta, and repair his relationship with Theseus (who does not seem to dislike Newt as much as Newt believes). I don’t view Newt’s special interest in creatures to be much different than Hagrid’s. He’s a magizooligist and his his career depends on him writing textbooks on these creatures that he loves. It makes sense for him to be an tremendous amount of effort into it. But he is still balanced. What do you think?
Okay so two things, many autistic people don't like the terms high and low functioning because it comes with certain expectations, we prefer the rainbow infinity logo over the puzzle piece because many feel as though we are seen as incomplete... apart from that cute video

The fact that his autism is one of the main things that I found so adorable about him❤
I’m autistic and I’ve always heavily identified with Newt, but seeing it laid out like this...... OMG I LOVE IT!
I made a shortfilm about autism, since i’m autistic myself and have a strong dislike for the representation in film. I hope you like it! ua-cam.com/video/dr4bX8qmed0/v-deo.html
I do not have autism but I find myself highly relating to him, I have very bad social anxiety and awkwardness, absolutely love animals of all kinds, etc.
Much love to him
I didn't even notice, I legitimately thought every human being acted like this...some were just better at hiding it...?
I'm mind blown, and now I'm looking at this movie with new respect, it's so cool.
Newt being shy and socially awkward is what makes me love him so much ,, he’s so cute
Same ☝️🥺🙌❤️
I can see that newt seems autistic but there's so many things wrong with this video:
The puzzle piece symbolising autism is made by autism speaks, a very hurtful company that claims to protect autistic people while doing the opposite: dehumanizing autistic people calling them ruined and promoting violent methods to "handle" autistic people.
Still thanks for making this video, ignoring these things it was really good
/gen :D
THANK YOU /gen - an autistic person
YES I AGREE

I just assumed he picked up the no eye contact thing because he works with animals and doesnt want to seem confrontational.
I TOTALLY agree
I saw this video pop up while sitting with my boyfriend, I said 'He's like us!' We're both on the spectrum, and he's been treated pretty badly for not presenting like what the general populace considers to be a 'good, normal person', so whenever I see positive representation I just 'Look!! It was only after I found out more about autism and got diagnosed myself this year that I really really saw these traits in Newt and honestly I adore it. I can relate to him so much and it's so nice to have that.
I'm just like Newt. As I have High Functioning Autism myself.
Newt doesn't have autism
@@nickstheory6610 he does lol
@@random-ft4mf no he doesn't. Where is it canon information that Newt has autism? JK Rowling has said nothing about the subject. It's a cool theory and all, but I just think it's wierd how people are just acting as though it's 100% true information after this video when that's simply not the case.

It’s so cool to know that more kinds of people are being included in these things! :D
This makes my heart melt. When I first watched the movies, I instantly noticed the signs of Autism in Newt. I'm high functioning Autistic as well. I was always ashamed that I was so different cause I would get bullied by other kids & I didn't have many friends.... Plus, some adults tried to blame my parents for my Autism saying they weren't raising me right or the scans effected me in the womb. Even the teachers treated me differently. It always made me upset. Newt really taught me to accept that I'm different & to ignore others who try to teach you to be normal. I'm so thankful that you made this. This helps give me a confidence boost whenever I've had a rough day. Thank you so much....
being autistic myself, I can relate to all the things mentioned in the video. Especially the “Socially Awkward” one.

I love this side of Newt like it just makes him look even more adorable, sweet, kind, and innocent 😇
I absolutely adore Newt. Definitely my new favourite character
One thing: we don't use functioning (high or low functioning) labels anymore, since both are harmful when applied to an individual 🥰
Either way, he's still precious and must be protected
What’s that supposed to mean 😂 .... either way ?
Not sure what that means but that man trained Ukranian Ironbellies for the Eastern front on WWI and the only reason the operation was cancelled by the ministry is because the dragons wouldn't listen to anyone but Newt and tried to est everyone else. This man needs no protection.

Just a quick thing! The puzzle piece logo is an outdated symbol for autism as it tends to imply that autistic people are 'missing a piece.' Also, terms like 'high functioning' and 'low functioning' aren't used anymore.

I have aspergers (which is technically considered ASD) and I relate a little too much to newt xD
i kin newt :D having autism/ADHD, seeing these videos make me really happy
What do you think?
one of the best characters in the entire series :]
