- Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. The world of Harry Potter is full of magical mysteries and hidden connections, but one particular enigma has left fans puzzled for years. In the third installment of the series, "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban," an unexpected name appears on the infamous Marauder's Map: Newt Scamander.
This surprising revelation has sparked countless theories and speculations among fans, all attempting to unravel the mystery behind Newt's appearance on the map. Today we’re going to dive into the most intriguing theories that attempt to explain why the renowned Magizoologist, known for his adventures in the Fantastic Beasts series, would find himself on the map of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry during Harry’s time there.
I’ve done a video on this in the past, but it was significantly less developed with fewer theories. It was also 4 years ago, so I’m excited to take a look at this topic again.

You missed a really big one....a certain event happened in year two of Harry's time at Hogwarts. He killed a basilisk. I imagine, at any age, Newt would have been more than happy to see such a creature before it fully decayed.
Since breeding one would be immensely risky.
There is also the fact that he could have been there to consult on dementors.

I also think he would consult on how to deal with dementors, similarly in reason to consult on how to deal with a werewolf.
Interestingly enough, Eddie Redmayne actually auditioned for Tom Riddle in chamber of secrets :-)
I don't think Dumbledore was the type to consult anyone in the ministry regarding Remis in anyway even to an old friend who works there. Dumbledore liked to keep his cards close to his chest. It's far more likely that Newt was there for two reasons, to help Professor Snape develop the Wolfsbane potion for Remis' condition at Dumbledore's behest, and to take Buckbeak away safely.
I think it would be cool if he did a one minute video on this, and added in his favorite theory of the 7
The most reasonable theory is that Newt Scamander( I'm sure I'm spelling his last name incorrectly) was there to see what he can do to defend or hide away Buckbeak from being murdered by the ministry of magic through the influence and threats of Lucius Malfoy
Yea because in the books dumbledore knew about Remus situation since he was a kid there wit the marauders he practically gave him a spot to transform with the passage under the womping willow to the shrieking shack !
What about the possibility of newt doing studies on the body of the basilisk. After all when was the last time 1 was known to exist nor 1 to be killed

I thought he was working with Hagrid. It was the first time Hagrid was taking on the role of Professor of Care of Magical Creatures so he could probably use some pointers.
Also around this time, Hagrid was probably hatching his idea for crossing fire crabs with manticore, which we saw Scamander had experience with. Maybe Hagrid decided to name his new breed after his mentor, sort of Screwy Newts, aka Blast-Ended "Skrewts".

Sometimes watching the movies I am shocked when a scene I've imagined while reading fails to play on screen LOL! Because I watched the movies first, the book characters look exactly like the movie characters in my head. So my first thought was "the map never lies" also. LOL! Thanks for the clarification.
While i think defending buckbeak would be a prime reason for being there, i cant help but feel trial result or not, he'd just be like "this is going south fast, put the thing in my bag and we'll get the hell out of here, no one need know who did it"
I think they couldn't do that for the same reason that Harry and Hermione have to wait hiding at Hagrids shack before setting buckbeak free. If no one saw who set buckbeak free they'd assume it was Hagrid.
The TriWizard Tournament would have been in late planning stages, and he could have been there as part of a preparatory comittee.
The buckbeak trial was going on so he was probably there to help save the hippogryph after Dumbledore probably ask him for help

Too bad it is not a real thing. Just a prop in a movie. So the Director was just like: Let's put some names from rowlings' work in there, as a little extra thing to notice, for her fans. And that is it.

Imagine just how far the Marauders could have gone if it hadn't been for Voldemort's uprising. If they hadn't died young, gone into hiding, sent to prison, or been held back by extreme prejudice, they probably could have made a map like that for the whole wizarding world, and who knows what else the four of them could have achieved.
I have a theory.
It was just a cameo.
Perhaps to remind the audience of a character that was an author of one of the school books, or foreshadowing another character that will be in the franchise.
It was most likely just that he was there to just visit Dumbledore, they were close and just got together for some tea. Often times the mundane is the answer.

Or maybe the book "Fantstic Beasts" was published in 2001, while filming of The Prisoner of Azkaban took place in 2003, it made for good way to throw in a reference.
Many people come and go for various reasons to a school, so as to what agenda might behind his presence on the school can be infinite

He mentioned 'filming' so i don't think he's talking about lore reasons at all here. He's basically saying it's like a small advertisement for the physical copy of the prop book that was printed in real life 2 years prior to the movie.

If it is a reference/easter egg, it's terribly implemented. I can't imagine someone made this decision and didn't once think "why would Newt Scamander be at Hogwarts?" There HAS to be a better place to make the reference than on a map that shows people's current location. Maybe a banner or trophy or something.

I believe the buckpeek theory bc in a way it makes sense bc newt loved magical creatures so it makes sense kinda
My theories:
1. A prank left by one of the Marauders for the others, showing random famous people on the map.
2. Ghost? Newt might be dead at this time, it's been a long time. I can see Newt staying behind, wandering the Forbidden Forest and watching over the beasts. And I think the map shows ghosts.
3. Or maybe Rolf was actually named Newt Rolf, after his famous grandfather, but (as some people do) preferred to use his second name? The map may be set to display the official name of the person.
4. I'm a fan of "Marauders can hide their presence on the map theory, except from other Marauders", but maybe instead of dissapearing, they are replaced by a random name form Chockolate Frogs. So, maybe it's Peter?
5. Glitch, but caused by the timeturner. It's a second copy of Hermione, but the map can't parse two copies of one person, so it desplays a random name it knows.
Came here to say that he might be a ghost. Do the ghosts of hogwarts show up on the map too is my question.
Definitely isn’t dead at that point, as Dumbledore was older than him in the FB movies and Dumbles was still alive and kicking until his incident many, many years later.
Edit: There’s lore for him from 2017 too, way past Harry’s stint at Hogwart’s.
I so dearly hope that Warner Bros. can still finish the Fantastic Beasts franchise. The story and the characters absolutely deserve a proper conclusion, whether people still think it does or not. Despite the countless plights this series has undergone over the last several years, and with work having officially begun on the upcoming Harry Potter TV show, I know it's not a popular opinion, nor is it a likely one. However, given that Warner Bros. has yet to officially confirm either the cancellation, or continuation of this franchise, my hopes remain alive that this story, and the characters therein, will be given the conclusion it deserves.
I like your first theory about Newt informing Dumbledore about what Lupin's actions might be as a werewolf.
I doubt that is a thing. Because Dumbeldore knew he was a werewolf when he was in school. Dumbeldore set up the shrieking shack for him to change when he was in school.

I don't like the implication that a werewolf is a creature and not a person. That doesn't seem like it fits dumbledore or Scamander.
@@Harry-mf6rq It is not their choice. That was explained. Some where categorized by wizards of the ministry while only the very sentient ones were asked what they prefer for themselves

I don't think the map theory holds up. It was showing Peter Pettigrew when he was believed to be dead. And if it was "glitching" due to age, the Weasley twins would have been caught at least once before they were able to pass the map on to Harry. In the books, Remus was absent from classes more times than in the movie, and became more ragged as the school year advanced. I think it far more likely Newt really was in the castle, advising or just visiting his old friend Dumbledor, or possibly attending to a wounded Remus after a full moon.
Also, Wormtail would have been caught much sooner if the Weasley twins had common sense and looked at the map while Ron was sleeping. It would have shown Ron sleeping with Pettigrew. The twins are old enough to have a vague recollection of the name Peter Pettigrew and shown Dumbledore.
Not necessarily while Harry was famous they didn't actually know the family none of the Wesley's were in the original order of the Phoenix group so they probably didn't know all the details or who snitched them out and everything they didn't really get close and know Harry and everything till Ron and Harry meet but if they were to look at the map they would see Ron in a door room with a room full of names with whoever sleeps in his bunk beds name right on top so they wouldn't pay too much attention to one name if they didnt know it plus it was one of their rats before ron got it so if they didnt notice it then they wouldnt now
Maybe it was multiple things: He was there to drop off books, and see the remains of a basilisk (without risk of dying), and to see his grandson.
Could Newt also have been dropping off various creatures for the DADA class to Lupin? Or for CMC for Hagrid?
That was always my assumption, that he was there visiting to help somehow with some of the different classes & lessons, or legit just to say hi to Dumbledore and shoot the sh*t 😂
He was dropping off a shipment of Nifflers for Hagrids care of magical creatures class 😁 thats how Hagrid procured a whole pack of nifflers out of no where lol

Could Newts briefcase be a portal to a room in Hogwarts, and so showed him on the grounds, because he was holding or even in said briefcase.
The only room that it *could* be would be the room of requirement. But the room only has one corridor that the door for the RoR. And the RoR also predates the suitcase.
I like the idea of this theory though, due to his friendship with Dumbledore, it would be cool if he created his beast sanctuary (or needed it rather) in the room of requirement, then he placed the other end of his brief case. Although I imagine other theories are more likely as he had several motives to be in the school at that time.@@dartimes6048

Many things about magical creatures occurred that year, from Hagrid beginning teaching, to Remus teaching defense against “dark creatures.” Remus and Hagrid would have needed a supplier. Plus, they sealed off the Chamber of Secrets, and I'm sure Newt would have been brought aboard to make sure there were no more basilisks or other dark creatures hiding in the chamber.
Only right explanation is that Cuarón thought it would be a cool easter egg and indeed it was.
Could it have been a combination of reasons? The basilisk, Buckbeak, drop off his most recent book to the school while visiting Dumbledore and Rolf.
Out of these, I’d say he was there for Buckbeak.
The most probable reason he was mentioned on the map is to have a reference to him, so that the Harry Potter movies can refer to one another and make fans exited about other films
Honestly, there do3snt have to be a reason. The createra just did it for fun. It is so interesting when people try to make it out to be more than what it actually is.
Exploring the lore possibilities isn't about identifying a conclusion, it's about getting enjoyment from sharing ideas.

The basilisk remains, Lupin, Buck Beak, Hagrid taking on Care of Magical Creatures, his textbook, relationship with Dumbledore, visiting his grandson, prep on the dragons for the triwizard tournament… reasons for Newt to be at Hogwarts, especially year 3, are endless… the map is never wrong
He could have been there due to the Demontors, think about it, Newt'd have to either be in Azakaban, or under trial at the MoM to seee them otherwise.
from my understanding and advancement on research for "heps, lycanthropcanopy, and werewolves" there are huge difference.
pure-werewolves are pure and their bite is infectious(newt has over 80 years studying this,moving..)
half werewolves are individuals born from one werewolf parent/muggle or werewolf parent/wizard..
magical inflictions are caused by: bites,cuts,scratches..
Has it occurred to anyone that none of these are exclusive, he could have literally been there doing all of these things. He could have been dropping off books (maybe an updated version) whilst there trying to save buckbeat, whilst also visiting dumbledor as an old friend - where remus and dementors may or may not be a topics of conversation, I imagine dumbledor was probably cryptic in regards to the identity of remus - as well as checking in on his grandson. He could have been there for other academic reasons like giving a talk or lecture.
I have heard that Rolf (Luna's future husband) was a werewolf & that's why their sons were named what they were... could it be possible Newt was there to give his grandson the same potion that Snape was making for Lupin? Also a good video idea to expand on (if there's more info about Rolf & Luna & his brother)❤

Could be a Barty Crouch situation. Rolf's real first name could be Newt. He could be Newt Scamander Junior or the 3rd. Perhaps full name being Newt Rolf Scamander.
If Muggle technology were allowed, I'd have written it off to the Map still working on Windows 95.
I was wondering if Newt might not have transfigured himself into a Hippogriff at some point, and so appeared on the map, but not as a character in the movie.
A very mundane/muggle theory, but it's likely that the SFX people trolled the books for Potter-ish names with which to fill the map, and didn't know that this particular wizard would get his own spin-off series.
I wouldn’t say that hippogriffs aren’t dangerous entirely.
Say a Muggleborn student who hadn’t yet had their first lesson in Beasts class came across Hippogriff (considering most people HL cannon a student could literately come across this creature in the wild) tried to pet one they get immediately attacked.
I think the most logical explanation for this is that they needed to put a bunch of people with names on the map to fill it out for the movie and they decided to throw his name in there as a cheeky reference since at that time he was an unseen background character that they had only referenced until long after the third movie came out when they released Newt’s book as part of the series and years after the final movie came out we finally saw him for the first time when the first Fantastic Beasts movie came out.

Two additional far more mundane possibilities
1. Newt had more than one grandchild and one was named after him.
2. As part of its security or just for the humour of it the map has a some of "dud" names that appear on the map occasionally and move around, the makers of the map know who they are and know to ignore them. The names of famous people come to mind when trying to come up with dud names a "Oh that's Newt Scamander the famous author well clearly that's not real, we can ignore that" type of security, or again the humour in the idea that someone might see a famous name on the map and go running off to meet them only to never actually find them.
We got to consider time dilations, not a rare occurrence, since its the same book where Hermione is using the Time-turner. Maybe Scamander was there on a timeskip adventure far more interesting than just "visiting" or curious about the Basilik.
i guess it may be multiple cause that drive Newt to come back to hogwart's. Basilic, BuckBeak, a sneacky hello to Luna, and discuss about hiring a werewolf with Dumbledore. With him at the head of a department in ministery of magic, he should be quite busy, so it can be all of thoses multiples and various reasons combined that made him doing the trip at his old age of 97 years old.
I fancy this theory: Newt was staying at Hogwarts at Dumbledore's discretion (aka "the Trelawny treatment") just because Dumbledore fancied Newt important to the master plan. I suspect he was originally intended to show up later (perhaps as a proxy Dumbledore in book 7) but was replaced by Aberforth when she got the idea of Fantastic Beasts.
Really think it was just an oversight by the filmmakers but it's fun to speculate

I don't think it's not a theory, but foreshadowing in the future. Or this cast the past.
Hogwarts knows who is at Hogwarts , that in part is what is needed for the room of requirement to work, it can not be a glitch.
Newt could have possibly been invisible as well. we know that movies had extra details in them so it could be that more is known later so impossible to discern with what is known

The Map never lies!! This was established in Prisoner of Azkaban where they question this possibility but Sirius and Remus both stood on the maps legitimacy. Only time the map "Failed" is when it almost completely unexposed Barty Crouch jr and what he had going on in goblet of fire much in the same way as Peter the year before.
An oversight from the animation team
Let's not forget, Dumbledore already knew about Lupin's condition, when he was still a student. That's when the shrieking shacks and the tree were set up.
I think with the vast amount of valid reasons in PoA that warranted Newt's presence, the idea that the Marauder's Map was faulty is weak. Especially considering that Lupin said the map never lies. I think the werewolf/buckbeak theories have the most credibility.
Perhaps he was doing all the things…
So, in Prisoner of Azkaban it would make sense for Dumbledore to most likely get his expertise and reputation to help defend Buckbeak's case and to properly educate the court in response to the accusations being thrown at Buckbeak for being "violent" and "dangerous". That would make sense for him to be at Hogwarts to meet with Dumbledore. Because remember, Dumbledore had a unique relationship and worked with Newt many times during the Fantastic Beasts moments.
I think he was likely checking out the situation at Hogwarts, plus paying a friendly visit to Dumbledoor. Then again, knowing Newt, he'd probably want to take a few notes on that Basilisk corpse in the Chamber of Secrets... but it's just a theory. A FILM THEORY. AAAAAAAAAND CUT!

Its because rowling did very little planning and just threw all the names around whenever she wanted. Thats why mafalda hopkirk seems to work in every department of the ministry.

We know that Luna marrys a Scamander after school, so I think it is possible :)
The one theory I find imposable would be Newt delivering books. Newt's book is on the list of books first years are required to buy. By the time the school year has started, all students would already have a copy and therefore there would not be any reason for more copies.
Also, it keeps being mentioned that Newt would be very old (estimated age mid 90s-100 during the series), some have even suggested that he is dead (and a ghost) due to his age. I believe Pottermore says he is retired. Regardless, his age should have no baring on anything. It's cannon that individuals in the wizarding world live longer than muggles and it's common for wizards and witches to live well pass 100. Dumbledore was Newt's teacher and was about 116 years before he was killed. Dumbledore isn't the only active +100 year old mentioned in the books, so you can't say that Dumbledore is a special case. Mathilda Bagshot was older than Dumbledore when she was killed by Nagini, she was the great-aunt of Gellert Grindelwald. Gellert Grindelwald, although defeated by Dumbledore, was not killed by Dumbledore (read the books) He was the same age as Dumbledore but was killed by Voldemort after Dumbledore's death. Dumbledore's brother, Aberforth, was only a few years younger than Dumbledore and he is still well and active at the end of the series. In book 7, the Deathly Hollows, Harry meets Elphias Doge, a friend of Dumbledore, who graduated with Dumbledore and he is alive and well. Ron's great aunt Muriel (estimated DOB 1889-1890), went to school with Dumbledore and Doge as well and she attends Bills wedding. This is just a list off the top of my head and just names mentioned through the series.
my thoughts on this is just he was bringing other creatures for hagrids care classes so visited albus while doing so and nothing more exciting then that
IMO from listening to this and reading comments, I'd wager Newt came to try to save Buckbeak, study the basilisk, and maybe give Albus info on werewolves, also probably share a drink or something with his old Professor/friend. At last that's what I'm believing in my head 😊
Okay, I just realized this. Harris was expelled and his wand was broken. Bret was expelled but what about his wand? Why was Hagrid’s wand taken away? Are you not allowed to have one if you’re expelled? What about Azkaban? How did Lucius get his wand back? Was there another wand maker who made wands for criminals and expelled students? Just curious.
Haggrids wand was snapped into pieces and he kept the pieces in a folded up umbrella 🌂 bc something killed moaning Myrtle and the young Voldemort blamed it on Hagrids giant spider friend who did it . So hagrid found a place in the forest for the spider and they snapped his wand bc of young Voldemort ( Tom riddle ) blamed it on hagrid .
Who is Bret?
This only happened in the movie...not the book. PLUS....it only happened in the closing credits...almost just as an afterthought of the screenwriters. As it did not come from Rowling, I do not see it as canon.
I believe Newt was doing it all, from advising on werewolves to seeing his grandson
Why Newt Scamander Was on the Marauder's Map ?

So I think its safe to rule some of these theories out, as being clearly nonsense:
1. warewolf advice - Lupin had been, with James , sirius and peter a part of the first order of the Pheonix, (Not to mention a student there) Dumbledore wouldnt have waited 15+ years to do his homework on warewolves. Newt's much more likely to have been there to advise on Dementors or the recently discovered Basilisk. (or, as you say, Buckbeak)
4. Glitch - Remus (Who made the map) was so sure that it couldnt have an error that when Harry told him it did (Peter pettigrew), remus decide to help a known criminal, Sirius , who until that point he belived to have murdered James. You dont put that kind of faith in an object without being damn sure that it doesnt just throw out random names.
Obviously, he was visiting his dear friend and protégé Hagrid, who was having difficulties teaching his Cars of Magical Creatures class and needed help.
He had only recently heard about the events at the chamber of secrets, and went looking for basilisk eggs

okay, i'm not the best at HP lore but here are two possible theories that may have been disproven somewhere else before:
What if Newt was a teacher at hogwarts and was just patrolling the grounds as any teacher would?
OR
What if Newt is dead, and his ghost now haunts hogwarts castle?
personally, I think it's most likely he visited to advise lupin and dumbledore on ideal containment measures for the werewolf transition, if I recall lupin would be locked up in a cage chained to a wall during his transformations, I imagine they would have consulted with Newt to ensure the construction of the cage and chains were up to standard and could hold up to the strength of a werewolf
Teachers can be seen in their table in the dining hall, and Newt its never seen there.
Isn't it fair to assume there are more teachers then sit at the table? I'm probably wrong but I though that department heads or significant figures (like hagrid the grounds keeper) sat at the table, due to the limited room and likely large amount of teachers at the school. @@MiljaHahto
Why would he deliver his books? Students buy their own books and spare cooks naturally come together by older students leaving behind theirs if they do not wanna take them or losing them and them being found but having no name on it, thus, going to the pile. And the student purchases a new one or borrows from said pile
I have the explanation. Newt Scamander was not at Hogwarts. He was not mentioned to be on the map at all in the book. Some Special Effects artist just liked the name and added it to the map.
In my opinion, just like adding McGonagall as a professor in the Fantastic Beast movies (set before her birth and attending Hogwarts), Newt being on the map in the movies is pointless and again trying to fan please or just simply added him for the hell of it.
