MORE of this! Please. This was great. I want to see you guys running some crazy scrap burnout cars on straight nitromethane. And I hope you guys learn how to add and use nitromethane reliably in some of your builds.
For anyone who doesn't already know: nitro contains both the fuel component and the oxygen component. So the more you add to the mixture, the more power it makes because it's largely bringing the oxygen with it. I really love seeing you actually test this out on the dyno though. VERY interesting stuff!
In the 1960s, the Ramchargers drag racing team made up of Chrysler engineers started adding hydrazine to their fuel. The tech inspectors wondered why the tops of their pistons were turning green, and they made up some nonsense about dye and combustion analysis or some such. Eventually their supplier got curious and asked what sort of military aerospace project Chrysler were working on with the ultra-toxic hypergolic rocket fuel. When they explained that they were using it as an automotive racing fuel additive, the guy flipped his lid and said they were all lucky to be alive.
From Australia Nitro is a different beast. My best mate builds top fuel motors, has done for 20+ years, I still can't go near them. Can't see, can't breath. But they run 2" fuel lines, twin 400 amp magnetos. That's adding a fire hose of fuel and lightning for ignition, literally.
Yeah, nitro is super dangerous, you're supposed to turn the engine over with plugs out to clear the cylinders, start it on regular gas, and then switch over to nitro. Engine's can and will explode in a spectacular fashion from the stuff, just ask any old timer at a dragstrip.
Congrats! You are the only person I've seen who commented on how dangerous this could potentially be. If I were there, the minute I saw that they were running fuel from a bucket I would have left. Crazy.
@@poncoolride You're forgetting the first rule of redneck shitfuckery, it ain't no fun if it don't blow up! I don't think longevity of the engine was really a concern here.

They really do, I have a stock LM7 in my 01 GMC. From the research I've done the old iron block ls based engines in the old Silverados and GMCs handle a lot of boost and power on just the stock block
@@CGT80It's NOTHING like trying to run a gasoline engine on diesel. The reason a diesel makes so much torque is because it has a HUGE compression ratio compared to a gas engine.
@@davelowets Diesel does not burn easily and the OP says nitro burns slow......... Hence the "like." I assume it does not burn easily, but maybe nitro does and is just slow. Yes, the compression makes sense. Diesel and gas/alcohols both run stupid amounts of boost for turbo race engines, and at first thought it seemed like it would even them out, but that is just pressure, not the combustion volumes the CR describes.
@Shawn Sanders anyone know of any videos of someone pushing one of these stock 5.3 blocks to their absolute limit? Seems like with more fuel this baby could have done even more.. much more really. The limit these guys hit was fuel. Thing was still running mint.

Love drag racing and worked in chem labs for years doing testing on various fuels. Years ago I had a Methanol 4 stroke racing kart. Was a very quick kart on Methanol. I ran it one time on 50/50 Nitromethane and Methanol. Was the most fun I ever had for 10 min. Kart hooked pretty good in turns on alcohol. On Nitro it blew the tires away in every corner and pulled like crazy...... Until the motor stopped. When I took it apart it bent the crank something like .150" on the rod journals. Like in Top Fuel, nitro is cool as hell but hard on parts.
From the intro till the end, this was one of my favorite vids in the last couple years. You have an amazing team and loved seeing Dr get all giddy and having the time of his life! Keep on keeping on.
Look up Fran Hernandez. He was head guy at Holman and Moody and challenged a guy to 1/4 mile race. It was the 1st sanctioned NHRA race. He didn't even have a car built at the time. Hernandez was the 1st guy to import Nitro Methane. He built a car in 1 week and blew the doors off the other guy. Hernandez went on to run the NASCAR racing program for Ford and ended up head of Advance Vehicles for Ford. He was a genius when it came to engineering. And I'm happy to say he was a friend of mine. He past a few years ago and still miss him. He was one of the most interesting and humorous people you could ever have met.
@@onefastboi14 Mullet will make 5k hp and top fuel makes 10+khp, double just like in this experiment. I would say you would double the power if you feed enough fuel and it would run.........for a little while, before your engine says "your done!"

Great content! Maybe 25 yrs. ago a rodding mag. had an article about something the racers in the early 50's were doing that would double the power of a stock flathead Ford...for one race. Hydrozine! Blown rods were worth a big prize win. And while they could, they used actual ROCKETFUEL!!! Outlawed long ago. Maybe you could try some of that, but do your testing outside.
Most definitely. I'm not sure what block this specific engine has but late 90's, early 2000's GMCs and Silverados came with the iron block LM7 and they handle boost really damn well
What an amazing boost in HP and Torque! Holy Crap! I get it, that it's a short lived gain, with problems coming down the road for long term use, but it really illustrates the potential it has for something properly built to handle it. Thanks Doc!
Fun! A-lot of these guys when they play around with nitromethane forget or don't know when when this stuff is refined/created it's bonded to an oxygen molecule. So, as a fuel it brings it's own oxygen to the party; it's the reason it delivers so much power when injected, compressed and ignited. Had these guys known or remembered this and used much higher fuel pressure and a whole lot more volume they could have seen some much bigger nunbers. Of course doing so might have caused that engine to scatter itself all over that shop... yard sale! LMAO!
I love science . Just goes to show how much potential an LS truly has . So detuned and leaned out for daily use . And hell ya to the Canadian winner 👌😊.

SOOO DAMN SMART WITH THE LITTLE TWEEKING ......RE-ADJUSTING THE TRANNY & SLOWLY ADJUSTING THE FUEL MIXTURE.....PRETTY DAMN AMAZING WHAT $400 FUEL CAN DO
it's called tuning, anyone who knows how to do it can do the same thing. problem is, there's lots of kids out there who have no concept of timing, AFR and duty cycle. i could hear the spark knock on that thing from the first time they added nitro and it never really went away. that engine is a couple pullsl away from the junker. id bet opening up the exhaust would help alleviate it some, as well as cranking fuel pressure.
We need some retired Leroy/Mullet/Ruby fuel system stuff on the truck. I'm genuinely curious what a 5.3L will do stock on fuel. This is one of the coolest videos you guys have ever put out. Awesome.

I'm guessing white trash will be running nitro race gas / methanol soon instead of the current setup with mass nos use. Really, i'm hoping it's a whole new vehicle, something odd to add to the fleet. I'd be mildly interested in seeing an old rwd volvo wagon burnout car running it's 5 cylinder on this until it blows it up. 😂
Finally!!! :D but now, small warning.... starting up or cranking engine with nitro in it may really make nasty explosion, even my small lawnmower engine got exploded so violently that there was pieces that gone trough plywood ceiling... so BE really cautious and safe with it... Greetings from fueller harley owner and mechanic...
I love the smell of Nitro in the morning...It smells like VICTORY!! The next thing to do, is change the oil and filter, run the engine on gasoline for a few minutes, then change it again! Burning CH3NO2 (Nitromethane) produces water and nitrogen, which becomes nitric acid in the engine oil. Once oil goes from being dielectric (insulator) to electrolytic (conductive), it begins to cause corrosion and worse, galvanization between dissimilar metals within the engine. That attacks bearings and piston rings and their landings. Letting the engine sit with contaminated oil does more damage, than actually running the engine! When going back to gasoline, you might check the fuel map... Maybe a little less duty cycle on the injectors.😀😀
I used to put r.c. car 80/20 nitro in my 87 mr2 mk11. Also, a homemade brown gas generator can give decent gains. It's super easy to make and adds alot of umph when the reostat is tuned in properly. Throttle body injection works best for tuning the hho generator. Easy to build hard to get proper ratios tho.
I mean, the amount of fuel being dumped into the engine to achieve this madness is incredible. No wonder why top fuel dragsters are so expensive to run (besides all the other variables)
Have you ever seen a video of how much Nitro is being just blasted into a top fuel engine? It's almost enough to hydro lock the engine. It only works because Nitro Methane has it's own Oxygen, so the air/fuel ratio doesn't have to be regulated anything at all like a gasoline engine.
Nitrogen is cheap Besides, everything used on the Cleetus channel is ad revenue. Which means nothing comes out of his pocket bc youtube is technically a "business".
I'm glad to see Dr tune them all keeping Cletus in check with the tunes lmao he knows Cletus wants all the beans of the rip and u can't always do it that way 😂
On the last good pull you could see the tire start to distort from the torque when he first punches the loud pedal! Impressive guys! I was belly laughing when I saw that tire begging for mercy. 🤣
Yeah, something to do with the shutter speed of the camera creates an illusion of the stokes spinning backwards. the effect is possible with the naked eye, but it's different.
With the SMX things for Mullet are about to seriously change considering what Tom Bailey and Steve Morris are going through trying to that much power from tearing up everything it's sending to the limit. However as far as this truck, it needs to be a Leroy type of creation so bend some pipe and send it.
Yeah they were, I have stock 2001 GMC that's 314 hp with just an intake and exhaust, this made me realize the power the old iron block v8's can make. Although I can't afford nitro methane anytime soon it's still cool to see the capabilities of these old engines
I doubt the engine would last a full trip down the track with that high of a mixture of nitromethane. If it did the plugs would probably be melted and the rings would probably be vaporized lol it would be cool to see a SM nitro small block thrown in!!
@@johnathanromero3944 at this hp level, that's not an issue. Plugs will be fine. It's the heat generated from 11,000 hp that melts parts in a TF engine.

Stoichiometric for gasoline is 14.7:1. Stoichiometric for nitromethane is 1.7:1. It literally takes injectors ten times the size as the stock injectors, ten times the fuel pump, and massive fuel lines/rail/fittings to support them.

Nitro is a different beast.
Crazy.
Yes this was incredibly dangerous.
@@poncoolride You're forgetting the first rule of redneck shitfuckery, it ain't no fun if it don't blow up! I don't think longevity of the engine was really a concern here.
yea, i was yelling at my screen telling Nate to duck behind the firewall during those pulls...especially considering the whole shop must have been filled with fumes already
Incorrect sir, nitro has less explosive power than gasoline. The compression in the motor isn't to the point where the motor would just explode
Shoutout to GM for making one hell of an engine to be able to take, and excel in a McFarland Racing Science session! Although I imagine every O-ring in that poor 5.3 has turned to jelly. I still wanna see bigger injectors and Dr. Spray E'm All Hit It with his best shot!!!
I mean they made close to 1000 hp a couple times with ruby if they had it at like 700 it would have lasted
I have an 11 gmc with that motor. They’re great engines but don’t have as much power stock as a 5.0 coyote or hemi.
@Service dogo joke guys get a camshaft
Id expect any engine to have similar power gains relative to its size. Not going to last long though lol.
They really do, I have a stock LM7 in my 01 GMC. From the research I've done the old iron block ls based engines in the old Silverados and GMCs handle a lot of boost and power on just the stock block
The starting point for timing on a top fuel motor is around 55-60 deg. BTDC. Nitro burns extremely slow so it likes a LOT of timing.
Nitro likes a lot of compression too. Which that engine probably doesn’t have, especially after that bout. 😂
Nitro HATES igniting
It sounds a bit like trying to run a gas engine on diesel fuel. It is interesting that diesel and nitro both make tons of torque compared to gas.
This was one of the most mind blowing things ive seen - and shows how strong the 5.3 is
would love to see what the 4.8 could do
That was 2nd gear. In 3rd gear, which is the true dyno gear for that trans, it would have made even more.
@Shawn Sanders anyone know of any videos of someone pushing one of these stock 5.3 blocks to their absolute limit? Seems like with more fuel this baby could have done even more.. much more really. The limit these guys hit was fuel. Thing was still running mint.
Cleet, make a sub section of videos with shit like this. Testing their stuff to the absolute limit. Will got tons of hits. Get 2,3 guys from the shop taking charge of it even. Freedom Factory Test Ground

Ive done this same test on a 5.3 ,you need bigger injectors and bump the fuel up 30% on 50% nitro we made 517whp and 589 torque
How do you figure out how much more injector u need
Just run the biggest that will idle. 2000-2500cc

One of the best episodes of Engine Masters, ever!
That Silverado was LOVING that fuel 😂
Started to sound like Neighbor before they added timing
Nitro can also schedule a rapid engine disassembly for you(Regardless if you want it or not) All around great fuel
There is a saying in the Top Fuel world. "If you NEVER want it to blow up, don't ever start it." Sooner or later every Nitro team in NHRA blows up.
@Glide1992 they blow up damn near every pass lmao
Yup seen that happen. Literally blowing the head off entirely 🙄
@@christopherleubner6633 Along with the blower.
ANY fuel can blow an engine up if the engine is making tons of power.
Now this is entertainment!! That answered so many questions that people wanted to ask. Thank you and the crew for this. Great show!!
That one 88 sent to Canada is more freedom than they’ve had for years lol
Ya definitely going to turbo our sled dogs... maybe even a moose....

Between this, the engine life plate testing, and other things ... we NEED a McFarland Labs channel!
Thanks for sharing 🇨🇦
I have ALWAYS wondered what the results would be with nitro in a stock N/A vehicle. Thank you for the entertainment and science!!!
I want to see what sort of gains I’d see in my boosted car 😂
@@onefastboi14 Mullet will make 5k hp and top fuel makes 10+khp, double just like in this experiment. I would say you would double the power if you feed enough fuel and it would run.........for a little while, before your engine says "your done!"

Noggin 😭
That’s unbelievable man. Those LS engines are a beast. So easy to gain a lot of power
Cleetus is about to run nitro on everything after this
So the lesson to be learned from this is that should be used as the fuel for Mullet to move you into the five second range.
Yep, that is why mullet only makes 5000 hp and top fuel cars make 10000+ hp......it's funny how it matches their doubled number on this experiment.
Mullet has the engine and turbo to go 5s it’s just the tuning and suspension they’re gonna have to dial as they’re already pretty freaking close
@@clankyexpert8998 Mullet is also heavier than Tom Bailey's car, from what they have said, so it will be harder than it is for Tom to run 5 seconds.
That is absolutely stunning, almost 200hp from just a fuel change
Great content! Maybe 25 yrs. ago a rodding mag. had an article about something the racers in the early 50's were doing that would double the power of a stock flathead Ford...for one race. Hydrozine! Blown rods were worth a big prize win. And while they could, they used actual ROCKETFUEL!!! Outlawed long ago. Maybe you could try some of that, but do your testing outside.
that stuff is incredibly toxic. that's why they don't use it.
The hp and torque gains are actually ridiculous
That sure said a lot for the 5.3 chevy. Horse power is one thing, torque is another. But to have a rock solid platform to work with is gold.
Yes none

it's called tuning, anyone who knows how to do it can do the same thing. problem is, there's lots of kids out there who have no concept of timing, AFR and duty cycle. i could hear the spark knock on that thing from the first time they added nitro and it never really went away. that engine is a couple pullsl away from the junker. id bet opening up the exhaust would help alleviate it some, as well as cranking fuel pressure.

That episode was a blast. This is the way science should be
I thought for sure James was going to come in with a nitrous bottle and blow the house down😂
Maybe at the end of its life when they are done testing
Now you know how a nitro injected A/FD can run straight up with a blown alcohol dragster. They make torque almost like a EV. Right off the hit.
You know that was over 500 horsepower to the flywheel on a stock motor. Now see how much more horsepower a stock 5.0 will make.
Nitrogen is cheap
Besides, everything used on the Cleetus channel is ad revenue. Which means nothing comes out of his pocket bc youtube is technically a "business".

Yeah, something to do with the shutter speed of the camera creates an illusion of the stokes spinning backwards. the effect is possible with the naked eye, but it's different.
I think Mullet needs to do a 1/4 mile run on nitro
pretty expensive motor to play fuel games with. I wonder what Steve would say if they asked him if it can go on nitro?
With the SMX things for Mullet are about to seriously change considering what Tom Bailey and Steve Morris are going through trying to that much power from tearing up everything it's sending to the limit. However as far as this truck, it needs to be a Leroy type of creation so bend some pipe and send it.
Mullet already makes too much power for small tire setup.
Cleetus isn't anywhere near the 5000HP max, so no need to blow it up on nitro.
@@warrenmichael918 nitro engines don't normally live a long life, Top Fuel dragsters do a burnout and a 1000 ft pass, then it's time for a rebuild.
Probably not realistic.

Stock 5.3 nitro tune, with some parts thrown at it having a pure nitro tune for the track would be killer. Those were huge gains!!!
But it would cost you a thousand bucks a run just for fuel!

Stoichiometric for gasoline is 14.7:1. Stoichiometric for nitromethane is 1.7:1. It literally takes injectors ten times the size as the stock injectors, ten times the fuel pump, and massive fuel lines/rail/fittings to support them.
