    Great video Josh! I'm a clinical data analyst at a local hospital in San Antonio. This is my first data analyst role and I've been at for about 3 months now and I'm really enjoying. I actually started as a computer engineering major and then switched to kinesiology to pursue Physical Therapy school. I got my DPT in 2021 and quickly realized that being a physical therapist was not a good fit for my personality. I had a friend who was an epic analyst at a hospital in town and he suggested I look into data analytics. I took the Google Data Analytics Career certificate course(p.s. the course itself is not in depth enough to prepare you for a job) and then also practiced SQL through various projects and Maven Analytics. I started seriously working on learning SQL in December 2022, and got my first (and only) job offer in February of 2023. I got extremely lucky that an opening at this hospital opened up at the right time. I sent out hundreds of applications and it was the only interview I got. They wanted someone with a healthcare degree and data analytics skills. I was vastly under qualified based on the job posting, but I interviewed well and was offered the position. I'm loving it so far. The position started off as in person only, but I asked my boss about moving to a hybrid schedule and he approved. So I'll be working from home 3 days a week within the next few weeks. Making the decision to move to this career is one of the best decisions I've ever made.

      Awesome! Congrats. The first job is always the hardest, but now that you're in, it gets easier.
      With enough experience, it will be easier for you to secure fully remote jobs in the future, move up to sr analyst positions etc.

      @J Harris I have a few recommendations:
      1. You could try seeing if there are any people in your hospital analytics department willing to mentor you.
      2. Learn SQL, and Tableau/PowerBi, try to develop some healthcare specific portfolio entries
      3. Once you're done with step #2, (and ideally step #1), try applying internally to analytics positions within your hospital. Talk to the supervisors, and managers of the analytics positions. Get to know them, and let them know you're interested in a career in analytics.
      I find that the easiest way to get a job in analytics is already working at the company and applying/networking internally. So try that angle first.

      It's awesome to hear someone with a similar experience and starting point to mine that has come out on the other end! I got my DPT in 2020 but also quickly discovered it was not for me. I enjoyed the documentation, electronic health record we worked with (Epic), and general healthcare aspects of the job far more than being a PT. I (thankfully) discovered healthcare data analytics and have been taking the Google Certificate course (I agree, it's pretty surface level). I plan on taking another course to get some projects under my belt for a portfolio and build my knowledge and confidence in SQL and Tableau. Thank you for sharing your story, it reminds me I CAN do it!

    This video came at a very interesting time. I am currently working the equivalent of your first job for another EMR company. I have hit the six month mark but truthfully speaking I can’t see myself doing this much longer as I feel like I am a “deer in headlights” for every client I am assigned to. Hence why I am looking to branch into data analytics. Learning about your journey was definitely helpful in seeking next steps on how to potentially transition into the field, thank you!

    Thank you for sharing, it gives me hope. I too stumbled into data after years of being a hca with the goal to be a nurse (got contact dermatitis so bad from all the handwashing I had to rethink my career) I stuck my head in the data office and begged them to try me. I worked for stroke data for 6 years and absolutely loved it, I worked closely with the Data Analyst who taught me everything he knew. I then went on maternity leave and whilst I was gone he left, so convinced I could fill his role with my extensive knowledge I applied. Unfortunately as managers had also changed whilst I was away they gave the job to my maternity cover 😭. So needless to say I left and now I am desperately trying to get back into healthcare analytics as a Data Analyst. I am fairly early into my journey but it's difficult not to feel disheartened. I am getting interviews but then getting rejected.

    • @DataWizardry
      @DataWizardry  8 місяців тому

      Thanks for sharing your story.
      It's a good sign that you're getting interviews. Keep at it, and eventually someone will give you an offer.
      You might be already doing this but keep brushing up your portfolio with Data viz projects, SQL projects, and when you have the next interview, practice practice practice! Prepare a response for all the questions you think they'll ask. The more you do this, the more confidence you build in yourself, and confidence is key.
      Asking good questions about the organization helps too, like "what did the analytics department look like 5 years ago, how does that compare to what it looks like now, and where will it be going in the future?"

    I work as a clinical healthcare professional in the Cardiac Cath Lab and am pursuing my MBA specializing in Healthcare Management. I plan to complete this degree by the end of the year. Additionally, I am starting a Master in Data Analytics at WGU and aim to finish it within a year. I decided to pursue these degrees because my hospital pays for them, minus taxes, as it falls within the maximum tax-free educational assistance contribution. The cost of each Masters degree at WGU is approximately $1200 annually. I hope this path will lead me to success and enable me to achieve my goals. I am currently in the last stretch of Respiratory Therapy school (B.S. Program). I've worked as a medical assistant since 2017 and worked with different EMR systems, especially EPIC. Upon graduation in May of 2024, I am considering enrolling in a MHA program. Quality care is something that I have grown to love, due to many mishaps that have came about while working in different healthcare settings (medical dept. in a corrections facility, primary care, and OBGYN). I would love to improve and strengthen the quality of care by becoming a healthcare administrator and invest into becoming a data analyst as well. Advocating for patients on the front end and back end is the ultimate goal. Not sure which steps I should take after graduating, but I will definitely continue to use you as a reference to help me along the way!

    This is an interesting perspective to look at, and serendipitous because I'm frankly feeling a little overwhelmed. My BS was in Software Engineering with some Data Science on the side. It has been a slog getting work in Tech since graduating, and I managed two days ago to land a good position that lets my wife finish her education where we are and isn't a dead-end for my career: Clinical Informatics Specialist at a hospital. I'm technically under qualified because I don't have the formal training/background in Healthcare Administration. The Team Lead was impressed with the other end in Data Analytics and Software Design though, and I'm doing my best to be prepared for the role in the next three weeks. This channel was a great find, my Team Lead said your channel has very relevant information for the role I'm doing! I'm considering the Data Wizardry course, but I don't know if I have the income to invest in it yet. Looking forward to learning!

Might be worth looking into if you're eager to hit the ground running in your career.

    Hi Josh,I stumbled upon your channel while searching for ways to transition into a data analytics role, and your story resonates deeply with my own career aspirations. Currently working as a quality management specialist with a background in mental health as an LCSW, I'm determined to make a shift into data analytics.Coincidentally, our team is facing a similar situation where our only data analyst recently announced his departure. I see this as an once-in-a blue moon opportunity to step up, but I acknowledge that I still have much to learn to take on the full responsibility in the role.I'm fully committed to acquiring the necessary skills and have already laid a foundation with basic knowledge in SQL and Power BI. Drawing from my experience as a behavioral health clinician, I believe I bring a unique perspective to the data analytics field, especially in understanding the business aspects.However, I'm feeling nervous about my technical proficiency and would greatly appreciate any advice you can offer to ace the interview and convince my manager to support my transition into the data analytics role.Thank you for sharing your insights and expertise, and I look forward to hearing from you.

    • @DataWizardry
      @DataWizardry  Рік тому

      Thanks!
      One thing that can be really tricky is finding publically available healthcare data to use for a project. Especially down to the zip code level in the video. Oftentimes, the coolest data is only on a need-to-use basis limited to internal employees working at an organization, or hospital. This is for a couple reasons:
      1. The data is proprietary, and owned by a company that only allows its customers to view it
      2. The data is patient-sensitive info, meaning, divulging the data could be considered a breach of HIPAA.
      Thus, I had to make up some arbitrary numbers for the video, just to have a proof of concept dashboard.
      That being said, there are some good sources of data out there that I'll be covering in a future video. You could try this source, which doesn't go as far as zip code, but gets down to county level: chronicdata.cdc.gov/500-Cities-Places/PLACES-Local-Data-for-Better-Health-County-Data-20/swc5-untb

      @DataWizardry  Рік тому +1

      I would say, first check this video out if you haven't already! : ua-cam.com/video/ime7OBlERiM/v-deo.html
      But, in general, my advice would be:
      1. Learn Excel
      2. Learn SQL
      3. Learn a data viz program like Tableau
      4. Build a portfolio of at least 3 data viz pieces
      5. Network as much as you can, or see if you can apply internally to analytics positions if you work currently at a healthcare organization.
      #5 will be super important. Right now it's tough to get a job through applications alone. But since you have already worked in healthcare for 20+ years, you probably know a few colleagues that either works in the analytics space, or they know someone that works in the analytics space.
      The more you network with these folks (like on LinkedIn for example), the more you increase your chances of landing a job in analytics.
      You could request an informational interview where you ask them about their day to day work. And also ask for guidance in landing a career in data analytics. These informational interviews are a great way to subtly hint to them that you are looking for an analytics job without being too direct about it (which can be offputting for some).
      I have found that these informational interviews and networking are the best way to secure a job interview.

      Health informatics is a solid choice. One of the smartest data analysts I know has a Masters in Health Informatics.
      That said, Masters degrees are expensive, and there are ways you can get experience instead of enrolling in a program. You could try landing a data-adjacent job like: program coordinator, research coordinator, etc. where they use things like Excel and SQL. You could work in a position like that for maybe 6 months, then start applying for data analyst positions.

I cannot afford the expensive tuition, but I cannot fold my hands and let my dreams die either. I am hoping to get a scholarship for my studies and I know God won’t let me down.
      With that out of the way, if you think there is a cheaper or easier-to-finance degree that facilitates the same purpose, I'm happy to hear it.

    Question: Firstly, thank you for spending your time in answering my questions. I want to ask that basically, I'm going to 1st year College and just finished High School. I want to be a Data Analyst because I'm really interested in interpreting data, and presenting and organising data. I've learnt how to create bar charts, radar graphs, etc. and create a dashboard (by the way, just simple ones) for my School as part of my Geography curriculum but I've never heard of anything like data cleaning and stuff, but I definetly enjoy Maths, and love creating dashboards, and doing research. Is data analytics for me? Because I've researched more onto data cleaning and it's perhaps something that I dislike, and perhaps presenting my data too, but other than that, I'm very interested!

    • @DataWizardry

      Data cleaning can mean a lot of different things. It might involve writing statements to handle missing values, dealing with various different ways something is spelled or referred to in a database. Among other things.
      For me personally, I work at a hospital that does a pretty good job of maintaining clean databases, so I find that I don't have to do a lot of data cleaning when writing code in SQL.
      But I've worked at smaller hospitals where the databses weren't so clean and I had to do a ton of cleaning. It really depends on where you work.
      But in general, yes, you'll be expecteded to clean and present data if you want to be a data analyst, or any role involving the visualization of data. But once you do it enough times, it gets easier.

    Hi Josh, thank you so much for your sharing! I also want to become a healthcare data analyst. I have a B.S. in Public Health and graduating this June, but I do not have any experience with SQL and data stuff. I am thinking of doing a data analytics boot camp. Do you recommend it if I want to become a healthcare data analyst in the future? Thank you!

      Hello! I would say if you're looking to expedite your entry into analytics, a bootcamp can be great for that given the level of immersion that they provide. They can be pricey, though, and I'm unaware of any that are healthcare analytics focused. That said, I am in the early stages of building out one, so stay tuned! In the meantime though, there are a lot of free resources out there like SQLZoo.Net, and I'll have some content on my channel soon on building tableau portfolios that might be helpful!

    Hey Josh,
    I have a question: I am a PT who has been in multiple settings and has a good knowledge of payer systems and their driving factors, EMRs (on the user end), and day to day processes of rehab staff (outside doctors, even though I am familiar with their role in the overall healthcare system, especially on the PAC end). Unfortunately the provider wall cap is approaching me fast, and so it's either into healthcare OP and Finance/management OR pivot into IT. I'm much more a problem solver than a corporate line pusher so I figured this is the natural transition. Any thoughts on where to get started to begin a entry level job/certs that could make me more appealing for higher level positions?
    Thanks man

      Hello,
      If you're interested in data analytics, I'd recommend starting here:
      ua-cam.com/video/ime7OBlERiM/v-deo.html
      ua-cam.com/video/ef4CAu-OwvM/v-deo.html
      But the easiest way to break into data analytics if you have the technical skills (SQL, Excel, Tableau/PowerBI) is to try to either apply internally to positions where you currently work (if that's an option), or leveraging your network of people you know, to see if they know of openings, do informational interviews etc.
      The only certs that I have found really matter in clinical analytics are Epic certs like Cogito, Clarity, and Caboodle. If you have access to Epic where you work, you might be able to self-study, and earn "proficiency", which you can obtain if you take the exam. (Otherwise you get accredited/certified if you have been trained by an Epic professional and pass the exam).
      Other certs like Tableau/PowerBI wouldn't hurt, but are more valuable for the knowledge that you gain, rather than the cert on its own.

      I think finance is a great subject to pursue for data analytics, because money is the life and blood of any organization.
      It's especially useful in helathcare because you can help with things like revenue cycle management, business development, cost drivers, analyzing a physician Relative Value Units (RVUs) which is a component of how they get paid, etc.
      I'm not as familiar with the finance side of healthcare, but there's definitely lots of opportunities out there to work in that field, and it seems like you have the right exprience for it.
      If you're passion is for clinical analytics, though, which focuses more on patient outcomes (this is what I do), check out this video: ua-cam.com/video/ime7OBlERiM/v-deo.html

    • @DataWizardry
      @DataWizardry  Рік тому

      Jae beat me to it! Epic tends to be very protective of their intellectual property. So, to learn it, you have to work with an organization that has Epic, and ask that organization to sponsor your Epic training in a class setting conducted by Epic. You can do three things:
      1. Take the class in person (wisconsin), pass exam, get certified
      2. Take the class online, pass exam, get accredited
      3. Take the exam (no class), get proficient
      There is some debate over whether path #1 is better than path #2, I think they're equivalent, as I have had offers from Epic consulting firms with just #2.
      #3 is still a good path, but not as prestigious as #1/#2.
      In order to learn it, what I would recommend is working for a big hospital. Usually they have plenty of resources to have their analysts do Epic training.

    Hi, thanks for the informative video, I'm a medical doctor currently doing my Master's in public health and also about to be certified as a quality improvement specialist. Thanks

    • @DataWizardry
      @DataWizardry  Рік тому

      Hi @arowosafepromise2188
      In general: analytics encompasses both data analysts, and data scientists.
      Data Analysts, in my opinion are more focused on taking data and creating reports that are focused on how an organization is doing historically.
      For example: how many brain surgeries have we been doing every year for the past 5 years, or what is the median patient wait time in the ER. How many left without being seen etc.
      Data Scientists, on the other hand, get into predictive and prescriptive analytics. In my opinion, it is really fun, but also more challenging. In data science, you are often using historical data to make forecasts about the future.
      For Example: Given that we have seasonality and trend components in our intake of patients with new diabetes onset, how many might we expect in the next 3 months, and how many staff members should we supply to give those patients diabetes self-management education.
      To be good at data science, you should be good at math: think statistics, calculus, and linear algebra. And you should know how to program in SQL, and an OOP like Python, or R.
      To be a data analyst, I feel like it is more accesible, because while stats is nice to know, you don't necessarily need advacned math like calculus, linear algebra, etc. And it should suffice to know SQL, and a data viz tool like Tableau.
      So whether you want to become a data analyst or data scientist really boils down to how rigorous you want to be in your analytical abilities. (And also, how much additional time are you willing to spend to acquire the math and programming skills if you don't already have them)
      That said, sometimes people who are data analysts (like me) will crossover into doing data science work, and vice-versa.

    Hi Josh,
    I currently work as a Business intelligence engineer at a local health system. I have 1 year of experience. How do i go about getting epic certifications and which ones should i get? Only if your applying for roles that require them is when you get sponsored for them. Am i wrong? Thanks!

    • @DataWizardry
      @DataWizardry  Рік тому

      Hi @sagarpatel7771, if your hospital uses epic, you could ask your manager if they could sponsor you for epic training. The sponsorship doesn't even need to be a trip to epic hq, your hospital might allow you to do online trainings which are cheaper, and just as good.
      Or you could work at places that use epic, (I always ask what ehr the hospital uses during an interview, and if they sponsor training.).
      You don't necessarily have to apply to the positions that require epic experience to get sponsored. The past few jobs I've worked at, for example, didn't even list epic as a requirement, but still paid for my training. So it's good to inquire during the interview, or screenings.
      The certs I would aim for are:
      Cogito fundamentals
      Caboodle fundamentals
      Clarity fundamentals
      And the Clinical Data Model

    • @DataWizardry
      @DataWizardry  Рік тому +1

      Hello! Welcome to the channel! One thing I would caution is that, as I'm sure you know, Masters degrees can be really expensive. And since you already have a Masters in data science, I think you're more than qualified to get a job now as a data analyst in healthcare.
      So what I would recommend, instead, would be to build the best resume and portfolio that you can. Then network like crazy. I find networking to be way more effective than mass applying to jobs.
      Make a LInkedin Profile if you don't already have one, connect with as many people as you know. Then figure out if any of them either work in healthcare, or know somone that works in healthcare (those people will have a '2nd' next to their name). See if you can setup a informational interview with anyone in your LinkedIn circle. The more you network, the more likely you are to land a job in healthcare.
      Beyond that, I'm also working on setting up an online course completely dedicated to healthcare analytics. As well as an upcoming Healthcare Data Analyst roadmap video on UA-cam. So stay tuned for that! :)

      I like to think of this from the perspective of probability. If you send out tons of applications online, maybe it takes 300 before you finally land a job. Those applications are very easy to filter out in the absence of networking.
      If you network, however, my experience (even recently) has been that the probability becomes more favorable, because you are putting a face to someones application, and you now stick in the person's mind as a tangible person capable of taking on the role, or at least someone eager to grow into the role.
      At the end of the day, its always a numbers game. But the more you network, and more people you meet in the industry, eventually someone will want to help you.
