I have to say, this thermal pad mod IS necessary. I got my GTX 1070 SC last month. I was getting temps as high as 95c but it mostly leveled out at 85c. Then, I applied the mod I got from eVGA the other day. Now my temps only level out at 75c on load. Mind you, the SC is a reference card with an ACX 3.0 cooler. Applying those pad to the VRMs makes a big difference.
+McKevin Sean I think some people received units that are affected more than others. For whatever reason, I could never push my 1070sc into the mid 70s. Maybe because it's a poor overclocker but this upgrade is definitely a good idea for anyone with a compatible card. It can't hurt. Thanks for watching! Glad your card is working better now.
Thank you for the video, my kit should arrive tomorrow for the 1070FTW. The temperature sensor isn't on the VRM's so may not be a good indicator of improvement. From the other video's I've seen, there is a significant decrease in temperature after the modification. Either way EVGA vouches for their cards and will provide replacement for any defects which is why I prefer EVGA over a few of the competitors.
Actually just found out about this issues with the GTX 1080 FTW today. All in all EVGA might have the best customer service I have ever experienced. Easy and quick on and off the phone, along with adding additional information I didn't know until I was on the phone with them. Will be doing the thermal mod kit this weekend or early next week when it arrives!
+YahBoyLadd they do have great customer service. The install should be pretty straight forward. Glad they got it taken care of for you. Thanks for watching!
I bought the 1070 SC a couple weeks ago and has no issues till about 2 days ago (black screen/crash). Firmware update did not solve it. Once i installed the thermal mod (from EVGA), all is good!.
Stock clock. Yea, a bit inconvenient. My vram was overheating to about 87c. With the mod, i'm at about 65c under load. My GPU now sits ~50-52c under load.
+Nelson E wow, that's crazy....someone else mentioned to me that the stock paste is junk, and recommended swapping out with something else. I didn't have issues before or after with my paste but maybe a potential problem as well. Either way, glad it's resolved!
You're welcome sir! I'd like to ask you something that i didn't in my previous comment: I just purchased a GTX 1070 SC just like yours and my serial number is in the EVGA web site. Should i use the same method that you've used? For me is a little bit complicated because i don't live in the US (from Brazil) and it would cause a lot of troubles for me to send the card to them so they could fix it. What do you think about it? Is it EXTREMELY necessary to put those on the card?
+x W4LK3R x for the 1070 sc, this isn't 100% necessary. It will only help, but doesn't have to be done. It's more of an issue on the 1080s, specifically the 1080 ftw. If it's difficult for you to do the upgrade, or send the card out, you can easily still get great performance out of the card by simply performing their firmware upgrade. Thanks again.
i used that thermal paste in that baggie and it dried up within a day because i had to take apart my card (same as yours) again for reasons. I'd recommend using your own paste man
Thanks, I was worried about doing it, but you compared it to replacing a CPU/cooler, which I can do confidently. Never taken apart GPU's before though.
Just installed mine yesterday, wasnt so hard as I thought it will be, but on the youtube video that i watched he didnt installed the small ones, And I didnt noticed it untill I finished, but on your video I see that EVGA already installed the small one so why did you replaced them? by the way before and after the installation my max heat was 70/71 and after installing the new vbios it droped to 64.
There have been reports that the factory installed Vram thermal pads (the small ones) were not thick enough to make contact with the heat spreader in many cases, so these replacement pads are supposed to be thicker. You can try googling to find the Reddit thread where people complained about this.
+aL Quarter are you overclocking? If so, how high? If you aren't overclocking then no, I would say that is not normal. A couple people have told me they were getting high temps with stock thermal paste, but mine seems to be holding up ok.
JoesTech no overclocks. i still didn't apply any thermal pads or updated the driver. I read on some forums tho that 75 degrees is perfectly fine for the card but your getting around 50 wow
My 1070 FTW sits at about 55-65 under load, I haven't downloaded the BIOS update, apparently all it does is ramp the fans up so you can do that yourself (it's what I've done).
I think 75 degree's IS probably fine, but it should be able to perform at a lower temp. What resolution are you running the card at when under load? Maybe because I'm still running at 1080/60p it's easier to stay cooler? Now that I know how simple it is to disassemble the card, I would maybe order the thermal mod, and also buy some premium thermal paste. Install the mod using a better paste, and you should see cooler temps. I'm just not sure if you will get down to where I am. Let us know which route you take.
+andrewrogers yes, it just adjusts the fan curve. I know it's not necessary being that you already are getting great temps, but any plans to do the mod?
+Gentle Poo yes, new cards are supposed to have the thermal mod applied going forward. You can however check your serial number on the site in the description to see if your card qualifies.
+Muaz Hashmi I don't think the metal shroud makes much of an impact. The backplate definitely helps dissipate heat. The mod is fairly simple and (especially if used with arctic silver or similar paste) can only help temps be more evenly distributed off of the card so I think it's worth it.
that's really odd, I have the black version of the 1070 SC and it didn't come with that guard on the top. It just had the board exposed and everything.
JoesTech yeah I think so. I'm not very computer literate, I just built my first pc a few days ago. And after looking at other people's cards, I think I got kinda screwed. my motherboard doesn't seem to be able to read it and can only boot through the motherboard graphics. I think I need to send it back
JoesTech I'm pretty sure I do. the fans aren't spinning. I have a 6+2 pin going into the gpu and the other is a 8 pin going into the psu. But the logo is lit, however I noticed even with the power cable disconnected, it will still light up when it's connected to the motherboard
+MissMan666 yes, this is where this thermal pad is intended to go. I believe the intention at that part of the install is to get the thermal pad to touch the tip of the heatsink fins allowing a better transfer of heat. Thanks for watching!
+David Zabaleta the newer cards coming out shouldn't require this mod. I believe it should be in the clear, but if you check your serial number on EVGAs thermal mod site it will tell you if the card is eligible or not. To be honest though, that may just be checking if it's an ACX 3.0 card rather than a non updated card. If I find any info I will update this accordingly. Thanks!
+Frank Beaulieu I still do. That's what everything in this case will be moved over to. I was just waiting on one part which I received last week. Should be getting rid of this old case soon!
JoesTech ah ok, cool, i now have the cash for 2 x 1080's but I'm scare buying these evga's cards , did evga have redistributed their rma's one ? who knows... well I wonder, I really like these cards, even if it's a minor issue , I don't want to mess with this... lol Nice vid BTW :)
+Frank Beaulieu from what I've read, they are correcting this on all 1080s going forward so I'd assume you'd be set ordering direct from them, but that's not always the cheapest. I'm guessing they are fixing previous RMA units for swaps, but I think the community would freak out if they were fixing RMAs and branding as new, so I wouldn't stress too much about that. I honestly think the EVGA 1070/1080 are the best out right now in their category, so I don't think you'll be disappointed. Thanks for the video feedback!
Hi . I loved your video. I wanted to know if it's so bad? Yesterday I bought it and it makes a coil whine noise. Now I'm going to send the pads and with that same really changes the temperature and the noise of the coil whine? . I have the option to return the graphics card this but I love aesthetically. What do you advise me Thanks and success with the channel
+TiTiPretzeL love the name first off...now down to the question. This is a great card, whether or not you do the thermal pad mod. Depending on if you purchased the 1070 which I show in this video, or the 1080 which I do not have the luxury of owning at this point, I would say EVGA has a solid selection of cards. They seem to have the weight that some cards lack, the aesthetics you'd associate with the price, and of course in a time of concern, they back the product. I believe I would still repurchase this care given the opportunity. Hopefully this answers your question. Thanks for watching.
+Gabriel Boss I am referring to the "core" temp, not the VRM's. Yes, the VRM's are what is affected when talking about this overheating issue. Oh one more thing amd cards have VRM probes on there cards so you can see what temp they are at, And if it was my card i wouldent run them over 80c infact if i want my card to last i make sure they stay below 60c. So this here 110+c stock is just insane IMHO.
Sadly you didn't realize what the actual issue was/is and that the vrm temp(issue) is not measured by anything at all. I advise to look into the vids from gamers nexus for more information on the topic. Next time maybe before giving misleading information. Not a rant, just a note

What thickness of the new thermal pads??
I don't know whether u remember me or not but, excellent video as always. Keep it up!

nice vid man this was really helpful

Using onboard graphics right now, just about to start the procedure.
it's a pretty nice guide too, you helped me alot :)
Thanks!

What size thermal pad do I need to buy?? Can't order from evga for some reason. Thanks
Im getting 75 degrees max. Is that bad? I thought its normal. How are you getting such low temps. Mine is the gtx 1070 evga sc

Due to my lack of research, I purchased the Evga 1070 SC ACX 3.0. yesterday. Are the thermals pads installed in the newly ordered cards?
+Gentle Poo yes, new cards are supposed to have the thermal mod applied going forward. You can however check your serial number on the site in the description to see if your card qualifies.
JoesTech will do when it arrives tomorrow. thanks!
+Gentle Poo no prob!
Gentle Poo was it installed bro? Mines coming in on Saturday!
does having metallic shroud affects temps in summer.. from Pakistan.. should i apply this mod?
+Muaz Hashmi I don't think the metal shroud makes much of an impact. The backplate definitely helps dissipate heat. The mod is fairly simple and (especially if used with arctic silver or similar paste) can only help temps be more evenly distributed off of the card so I think it's worth it.

the protective board at 2:49

I've been getting 61-62 degrees Celsius on my 1070 superclocked gonna get the evga aio hybrid cooler kit to fix the problem
+Tim J that will definitely keep things cool under pressure! Thanks for watching!
4:58, i imagine putting thermalpad on there is actually gonna give you worse temperatur, did the instructions tell you to place one pad there ?
+MissMan666 yes, this is where this thermal pad is intended to go. I believe the intention at that part of the install is to get the thermal pad to touch the tip of the heatsink fins allowing a better transfer of heat. Thanks for watching!
JoesTech thanks for the answer. To be honest i think EVGA made a mistake about the placement of that thermalpad, the rest i agree with.
Does the black edition have the same problem?
+David Zabaleta the newer cards coming out shouldn't require this mod. I believe it should be in the clear, but if you check your serial number on EVGAs thermal mod site it will tell you if the card is eligible or not. To be honest though, that may just be checking if it's an ACX 3.0 card rather than a non updated card. If I find any info I will update this accordingly. Thanks!

ever find out? the 3 pieces might not even be the same
Hi . I loved your video. I wanted to know if it's so bad? Yesterday I bought it and it makes a coil whine noise. When you say 55c, do you mean on the core or VRMs, the two are very different, the thermal pads are for the VRMs
+Gabriel Boss I am referring to the "core" temp, not the VRM's. Yes, the VRM's are what is affected when talking about this overheating issue. Did u use something to rub the paste from vga?
+Hyoga Cygnus I'm not sure I understand the question. For cleaning I used a "lint free" paper towel, and for placing new paste I just put a dab in the middle and allow pressure of the heat sink to spread the paste. Does that answer your question?
So I dont need to buy that iso alcohol? Is teh paper towel enough?
+Hyoga Cygnus I'm sorry I misspoke. Yes, that is a requirement as well. The thermal paste is thick like a putty almost once it sets, so you do need the alcohol on the lint free paper towel in order to get the surface cleaned.
Oh ok. TYVM!
+Hyoga Cygnus no problem! Thanks for watching!
EVGA sent you a kit to keep your VRAM cool, so you measure the impact it has on the core temp...............
Where I can buy the kit pls
+Level1 Gaming if you go to the link in the description and have a valid serial number you can get it for free from EVGA. Thanks for watching!
JoesTech for free?
+LEVEL1 GAMING for freeeeeee! It should actually tell you if the card came with the mod from the factory.
JoesTech yooo TNx for the information buddy
+LEVEL1 GAMING no prob!
Nice video. Like
+Андрей Курятников thank you!
It doesn't cost anything because it doesn't DO ANYTHING. If anything adding a thermal pad to your chokes will only hurt your temps as air flow can not cool them or the area around them. that being said the VRM already have a thermal pad (noticed this in your video so kudo's to that) so basically the only thing you could have done is added thermal paste to the pads that were all ready installed for the vrm the rest of that junk is just that placebo crap. If you want your vrm to run cooler speed up the fan. This is why i dont recommend nvidia cards any more the hard ware is sub par to amd. Aka built cheap for no reason other to be cheap and hope these cards die prematurely. That way they can sell you a new one. i have seen more nvidia cards dead over ati/amd in the past 5 years infact i have only seen 1 amd card that "died" and it still works just not performing like it should. i have seen lots of nvidia cards DIE. after they are few years old(and a few new ones as well). So for anyone owning a nvidia card i recommend not overclocking it. and if you own a super clock restore it to defaults or run the fans faster. just not worth having it die on you after only a few years or less.

Sadly you didn't realize what the actual issue was/is and that the vrm temp(issue) is not measured by anything at all. I advise to look into the vids from gamers nexus for more information on the topic. Next time maybe before giving misleading information. Not a rant, just a note
+TheSickness1234 take a look at the link I added from the EVGA website in the description. The information I provided regarding my EVGA card was related to that post, not something gamers nexus posted. But thanks for watching.
JoesTech the thing is the temps stated have nothing to do with the mod and the issue they are supposed to resolve. Tbh, you could have stesstested the card and then have measured your own body temperature before and after, same information. GPU temp is not vrm or vram temp, just saying. As a tech tuber these details got to matter. Like your content and am interested on how it will thrive. Really just trying to help.
+TheSickness1234 I appreciate the feedback, and will keep it in mind for the next time. I definitely could have went into more detail about where the increased temps were and how the pads would help resolve those issues so I'll try to be more detailed about hints next time. Thanks again!
