  • Gallery guests will enjoy stunning images of Dali’s homeland on an epic scale and explore Dali’s surroundings through the eyes of Florida’s greatest nature photographer, Clyde Butcher. Known as the “Ansel Adams of the Florida landscape,” Butcher’s photographs are technically brilliant and their large format creates a euphoric, immersive experience for viewers. His works have become an influential part of Florida’s cultural landscape, showcasing the true beauty of Floridian swamp and marsh environments.
For Salvador Dalí, the landscape of his homeland was always an essential feature of his work and outlook on life. The Dalí Museum sought Butcher’s talents to capture the spirit of Dali’s Mediterranean home, located in one of the world’s most dramatic landscapes. With a discerning and selective eye, Butcher traveled to the village of Cadaques, Dalí’s house in Port Lligat and the rugged region of Cap de Creus - all areas that are prominently featured in Dali’s works - and provided a glimpse into his psyche. The thoughtfully curated collection features 41 photos that take viewers on a journey through the Catalonian region. The exhibit is Butcher’s first photographic exhibition of Spain, as well as the first time he has been commissioned to photograph an area that influenced another artist.

I used to talk to Clyde when he presented his work at art shows years ago. I've known about his work for a long time because I've been a photographer for over 50. Clyde is an inspiration!!!

Mr Butcher: your work is magical and moving. It’s a real privilege to see it. If any one can save the Everglades, it’s you. A great contribution. Up there with Teddy Roosevelt, John Muir and Ansel Adams. Very very few photographers are able to photograph the heart of a place. You have done that. Thanks!

Clyde is the true and only inheritor of the spirit of Ansel Adams.

I have been shooting black and white photography since I was 10 years old after purchasing a brownie hawkeye camera for 12 cents at a yard sale in my neighborhood so many years ago. Moving on to large format cameras I have over the years used it on and off passionately. Watching Clyde patiently work with his camera I can appreciate his methodical approach to the photograph and the effort and energy placed into every print. I have known about Clyde's work for years and only this week am I able to finally see his work up close. As luck would have it I will be able to meet the man in person in Sarasota at his opening. I am truly inspired and I am excited to meet Clyde and see his work in person.

Some people do feel that way about Dali. He was a different sort.
