Great music for this video and others in my channel can be found at player.epidemi... check them out!
In this third video about the Landscape and Light, I cover reflected light, show some examples and give a couple of tips on how I use reflective light to create compelling images.
This is very intelligent. Very educational. So refreshing on UA-cam thank you 😁 (great pics obvs btw 😉)
Thanks, Runninblue!
Thanks for the mention Adam!! I enjoyed this video as much as I enjoy shooting subjects in reflected light. :-)
Haha cheers, Ben! I couldn't talk about reflected light without giving you a mention, lol.
Adam. As I life-long photographer in all formats, including film 4x5, I want to say, at least this.
I love Gavin and Thomas. Love them both,
They are absolutely “gorgeous”, and it’s great you are all friends and in this game.
You, sir, however, are truly a master.
You all create utterly unique art. Really.
You capture magic.
People speak of being a doctor’s doctor.
You are a photographer’s photographer.
Love you all.
It’s clear to me who is the gray-beard of your wizard’s high council.
You.
Stunning work that leads the way uniformly.
Btw, hello, from Tacoma. You and your students are welcome here en route to natural wonders anytime,
You want a challenge, Adam, come to Australia. There may be hundreds of waterfalls in Vancouver Island, but right now, in a prolonged drought here, there wouldn't be a functioning waterfall within 100 miles of my joint. One pleasure in watching your videos is the wondrous scenery you get to - the Faroe Islands, Iceland and so forth. At the moment, with the exception of Tasmania, most of my country looks like an ashtray.
Excellent video. Great explanations and examples of reflected light.
This has been a great series Adam, as usual spectacular exposures. Thank you for the lessons.
Awesome photos. I really dig the flowers you did.
Adam, I love that trick with using the Lee filter box as a mini reflector! Thanx for another sweet lesson! Saying hello from St Louis, MO
Thanks for the hints and the links. Specially the music one, your videos are quite meditating, the combination of images and music have a calming effect 😊 (can I say that so? Non native English speaker...)
Great, thank you, Roland!
Thank you Alan for the insights. Useful even to experienced photographers. The photos you‘ve shown in this series of videos are truly inspirational!
Glad you enjoyed it
You’re extraordinary talent, which you have spent many years honing, is only matched by your wonderful humility. I hope to meet you somehow next year.
Thank you, Mark!
What a fantastic series of Light, Adam
Much appreciated so educational.
Many thanks
Finally a more mature approach into landscape photography
Adam love your channel and how you explain things you really are a master of your craft
I love being in and around the woodland myself and have a strong connection with it for time to reflect on stuff in life
Coming from Dorset in the UK i spend a fair time on the Jurassic coast but more and more each time i go out i find myself driving to the forest than the sea if interested is one of many woodland shots i took on instagram instagram.com/p/Be2a6TrnJop/?taken-by=capturing.the.elements i also have a page on flickr linked on my IG
hope you like it
Once again many thanks for making such awesome content and sharing your experiences
Thanks, Phill! Love the Instagram image, super light!
Thanks a lot. Really enjoyed it.
That my friend was a very informative and well put together video!! love your images also! im very guilty of assuming the polariser is needed for every shot! maybe not fully engaged but your vid was a great reminder that its not always the case and in some cases can take away important elements of an image!! fantastic vid mate! top images as always too! i really would love to visit your part of the world.. looks incredible!!! one day!! :-)
Hey, Gareth thanks for watching and the great feedback, much appreciated.
Nice and interesting insight Adam on how you work with the light...thanks!
Thanks!
Thanks for the great info. Your photography is amazing.
Thank you, Stephen!
Very interesting,love it
Stupendously impressive. The best photos I've ever seen
Thank you!
Thanks for the video :-) very inspiring!
Good to hear, thank you!
I watched all three videos. Thanks for the education.
Thanks for watching!
What do one say Adam? It's just a darn good video of Reflected light, which we all try to search for. And those Images of yours, really blows me away, 👍so now I'm far away LOL 😉
Great! thanks, Leffe!
These three light videos were so amazing,,,best light ones out..a big thank you,,,learnt a lot from them
Excellent video Adam, I really like the point you made about using polarizing filters, I've felt for a long time that in some situations a polarized can do more damage than good to a scene if dialed in to much. Sometime you just need that sparkle that reflected light brings to a scene.
For sure! That sparkle can also open up the dark areas as well, filling in black voids. Thanks for the feedback.
Thank you Adam...great video.
Thanks, Sharon!
Awesome images. Quite the portfolio. Love your channel. Great content.
Thank you for sharing Adam. I love your photoes and teaching me a lot of thing. Even if I am not like you. I hopely I can be like you. What kind of the camera do you have ?
Very interesting video and some superb images
Thanks, Phil!
Thankyou
Love your work and this series in particular. Has given me some insights and things to watch for. I'm a big fan of polarizers and now I can see (pun intended) that I need to watch out for them. Nice work.
Thank you so very much, Adam, for all that you give! Amazingly useful tutorials! At least for me. I even saw a dream tonight in which I was saying this to you. 😁
Love the blue sky reflections in the dessert scenes... I love snow light... almost like the beauty of sand dunes... only colder
Love that trick with the Lee filter box. Always learning. Nice video.
Beautiful shots Adam
Thanks, Tom!
Those opening images !!! Freakin hell, Adam .... damn those are awesome ... so glad you won the award last year
Thanks Adam...this is very instructional for us. Light is amazing
Another nice video, Adam.
Thanks, Ivo!
Another very informative video Adam you have given me a new way to look I will firs look for light then composition
I really enjoy your videos. You’re a great landscape photographer as well. You truly inspire.
Man, Adam, you are a master...love all your videos but especially enjoying this series on light...making me look at my subjects in an entirely different light...LOL....But seriously love your work.
No pun intended, lol. Thanks!
A tour de force in photography! Image after image, I don’t think my chin can go any further to the floor! Loved this series and this was a belting way to finish it! Saved, liked and loved...
haha, thanks, buddy!
Another EXCELLENT vlog!!! Fantastic idea to use Lee box to reflect the light!!! Adam thank you so much for showing / sharing your photography knowledge!!! It's a pleasure to watch your videos 👌🙏
Always a pleasure, thanks, Victor!
Astonishing and inspiring .
Thank you!
Very informative. Thanks Adam
this is extremely nice 😘
Thank you, Gohdwinez!
Thanks Adam... Your insights on the importance of light is once again spot on the money... The opening images on this thought provoking video is a visual feast... The subject of reflective light as your images clearly illustrate moving through the video demonstrate this... I once again feel inspired by your audio & video on the subject of light. When to use a cpl or no not use it. Nothing not to like here...
Bill Farr, Vermont, USA... :-)
Thanks for the feedback Bill, glad to hear that the video was inspiring.
I think "subject matter" and "composition" should get equal billing with the "quality of light".
I guess it really depends on the context and what the image is being used for. For my purposes, Thanks, Franz!
I have watched your videos for some time, enjoying each immensely. Today the photos literally took my breath away momentarily. Outstanding.
Good to hear, thanks, Linde!
Brilliant. I’ve just watched all three in this series and understand more about the different types of light and how to make the best of different conditions. Now to go out and put this into practice. Thank you. Monica.
Adam, your videos are a breath of fresh air among the clutter of photography videos on youtube. It's true you never stop learning, but I had turned away from watching videos as a tool to keep my photography moving forward. That is until a friend suggested I check out your photography and I stumbled upon these in the process. Your insight into your process is a wonderfully refreshing to watch and I feel like I learn something about myself as a photographer from the way you approach locations. I am moving to Vancouver Island this summer and wish I could join you on your fall workshop, but alas, it's sold out. I'll keep an eye open for something in 2019 and look forward to hopefully meeting you someday. In the meantime, I look forward to watching more of your explorations!
Thanks, Michael! 2019 I should have a few new workshops, I'll announce them soon, hopefully. Thanks for the great feedback, much appreciated.
Another excellent video. You are an excellent teacher and a most awesome photographer. Here in NE Ohio, we rarely get good light; instead lots of grey skies. It definitely has made me more focused on composition but I yearn for the beauty of light that you seem to find everywhere!
Thanks! on the west coast we do get a lot of rain and grey days so I do feel your pain.
Great video Adam, always learn something from your videos, thank you for sharing. Cheers, Paul.
Great, thanks, Paul!
Fantastic lighting, your vlog is the most educational one by a huge margin. What amazed me was, how much effort went into e.g. the flower shot, ingenious to use the filter case as a reflector! The detail in the cave picture was stunning, too. I do get why you are called the "master of soft light" by some. Keep it up please, Adam!
Thank you, Thorsten!
Greetings from Sweden. Just discovered your vlog and have moved you up to the very top of my list of favorites that I subscribe to. I'm slowly trying to catch up on your back postings. Very sophisticated and artistic approach you have! Great drone work, nice transitions between the images, the music, the still images placed on top of a slightly blurred moving image. Very subtle nuances that I suspect other vloggers will start to copy when they discover you. You've definitely raised the bar for them.
Thanks, Deborah!
Excellent insight Adam! I’ve really enjoyed and learned from your videos on light. Amazing photos! Thanks Adam!
Excellent! Thank you!
Ive missed seeing you incredible vids Adam, Learning a thing or 2 from you. Have quite a few vids to catch up from you ,
I have been busy with the foster children I have. I need to get out with my camera !!
Well, that's a good thing to be busy with. Thanks. Nathan!
Thanks. Loved this video. Beautiful images! Loved the advice on polarizers.
Cheers, Greg!
Excellent video Adam! Probably not an original comment of mine, but I often say to people the 3 L's are as important in photography as they are in real estate except that instead of them being Location, location, location, they are Light, light, light!!
Very true! Light, light, light and then composition and then light again, haha. Thanks, Dale!
Brilliant video from start to finish Adam. I always come away from your videos feeling inspired to be more mindful the next time I press the shutter. Thanks for that. Cheers!
Thanks, John!
Thank you Adam! Very informative beyond the obvious. I love the reflection you created on the flowers and your snow shots are among my favourites!
Thank you, Charlene!
Adam, I discovered your channel a little while back. Always look forward to your videos and love they way you structure them. I am travelling to Vancouver in September so your videos are giving me a great insight into the area too. Keep the content coming - it's great!
Cheers, Ian!
Thank you for this series. Brilliant info!
Great video Adam, I especially enjoyed this series on light. Since watching your videos I have paid more attention to the light when out photographing. I really like the point you made about polarizer filters. Again really enjoyed it. Thanks
Thanks, Bruce!
I've so enjoyed your series Adam. I think this part was my favorite, particularly your thoughts on polarizers. I echo runningblue's comments below - always intelligent AND educational. Cheers.
Great to hear Miguel! thanks for the feedback
Another great video, Adam. I really enjoy your way of explaining your point, and I love the images you use to illustrate it. Thank you for making the effort and for sharing your knowledge and experience.
You're welcome, thanks for watching!
Much to think about and use, especially about the polarizing filter. That had never occurred to me. Duh! lol!
Thanks, CathyAnn!
Great content here Adam. I have to admit, I spend a lot of time trying to eliminate reflected light in my images (with a polarizer and other things) because I'm thinking about saturating colours. It wasn't until I started hearing about harnessing this reflected light and using it to the advantage go the image from you and Ben Horne, that I even really thought about it as a good thing. You've got my brain working again. Thanks for that... and welcome back home!
Great, thanks for the feedback, Wade!
Brilliant and instructive. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge.
Thanks, William!
Adam, thank you so much for putting together such a thoughtful discussion on reflected light. So many times I find myself in the field stumbling upon things as I'm working and appreciate it at that time, but maybe not quite getting what the landscape is telling me. Having someone else put to words their experiences is such a great help. Thank you for being that voice. So looking forward to returning to these places with a different set of eyes for the quality of light. Best to you and thanks.
Thanks, Adam! Fantastic photos of reflected light. Keep ‘em coming!
Thanks, Linda!
Stunning work. Just wow! Thanks for sharing your photos and experience.
Thanks, Dan!
Hello Adam, a very thought provoking tutorial on when and not to use a polarizer. Thank you as always....
Thank you, Allan!
Great series of light! Just suffering a bit in Austria with good light 😀. Reflected light was very well explained and probably in the best way I saw so far.
Cheers
Jürgen
Thanks, Jürgen! We seem to be having a bit of a heat wave here as well, blue skies and crappy light. Oh well, looking forward to the fall ;-)
Last weekend I made a trip to a forest, not so beautiful like on Vancouver Island ;-) blue sky without a cloud but the results were not so bad. Looking forward to the Talon!
Great series. I am often surprised how many outdoor photographers don't understand how the given light is either working for or against them. Knowing in advance what light you have, allows you to have a better idea of what to look for in compositions. Over time you develop the eye to see what potential a scene has for other times of the day and light changing. Good stuff Adam.
You've got it, most definitely the key to good photography.
This one is awesome Adam! I like the mood, the quality of your work and the information you are sharing. You are a great inspiration and always looking forward to the next vlog. Keep on going, thank you!
Fantastic! thanks, Guy!
Great video Adam. I enjoyed seeing the great photographs you used to demonstrate different types of light. I think we photographers appreciate the landscape so much more than others by seeing how the light affects it.
Most definitely, photography certainly does nurture observation, thanks, Andy!
Informative and enjoyable. Thanks and cheers, G
Great! Thanks!
Great video Adam, some really great insight into how light works, and even more useful about polarisers, I think many of us are too quick to throw on a polariser to saturate greens and blues and forgetting what they do to the reflections. Great images as well by the way!!
Thank you, Tim!
These are the best!
cheers, Peter!
Great episode Adam, your descriptive narration coupled with stunning images really do make it easy to watch and enjoy - Inspirational for sure.
Great!! thanks, Alan!
Another great video Adam! I think we take light for granted and don't always discern all the types and qualities that are presented to us.
I see that you are now into the 8k subs. Once more landscape and other photographers are exposed to your content perhaps they'll understand the value of watching
this channel as opposed to some of the empty content but popular photography channels.
Thanks for the support Drew, very much appreciated.
Some very nice images Adam.
Thanks, Ray!
Great work & amazing light well illustrated, lovely stuff.
Cheers, Michael!
Great stuff Adam. These videos help me a lot with how to take my photography up another level. Thanks.
Great, good to hear. Thanks, Paul!
you are so right its all about the majic of the light...
OMG! This is awesome. So many great images and tips. Thank you for sharing!
Good to hear, thanks!
A great tip on using polarizers. I almost always go immediately to polarizers for anything wet regardless of light. It simply hadn't occurred to me that with the softer reflected light, the polarizer may actually decrease the interest. I will give that a try. I really enjoy the Recognizing light series. Thanks for doing it.
My pleasure, thanks, Philip!
Would love to see the set up with the reflective light and the lee filters canister on those flowers. I have to shoot flowers all the time and that'd be helpful
Great vlog and tutorial on reflected light, just love thise photos you included in this vlog, very beautiful 😉. One thing I can say for sure is, you have a great eye for seeing the light!
Thanks, Richard!
Another grade A video. You tubers are very fortunate to have you sharing the knowledge that you have with us. thanks
Good to hear, thank you!
Loving this series Adam!
Good topic - well presented! Thanks!
Great video Adam! I really enjoy your channel and feel like I also learn quite a bit :-)
Great, thanks for the feedback.
Wonderful images Adam. They reflect your talent for seeing beauty.
Thanks, Kevin!
Absolutely stunning images and an inspiring video. Thank you. Leslie
Thanks, Leslie!
Really interesting insights into how to recognise and control reflected light. May I ask you about white balance on your snow shots? I was really struck by the beautiful colours reflected off the snow in the first snow shots in the video. You seem to have captured these colours while avoiding the typical overall blue cast that often comes with snow photography. When avoiding the blue cast myself I often use the eye dropper tool in Lightroom to “correct” the whites in the snow, but if I tried this with your shot I would lose those wonderful colours. So, my question is; how do you achieve a natural look to your snow shots, without overall colour casts, yet maintain the reflected colours that you want? Hope this makes sense and sorry for rambling! Greetings from the far north of Scotland by the way.
Depends, for most snow shots I just colour correct by what looks good, using any of the colour correcting tools in LR or PS. Occasionally I'll desaturate blues and work on the warm colours, saturation, tone and so on.
OK, thanks Adam.
Love your intros to your UA-cam videos.Great productions too .
Thanks, Mark!
Very informative as always. Also very enjoyable at the same time 👍
Thanks, Kevin!
