  • Clyde Butcher, a photographer best known for his monumental, black-and-white, Florida landscapes, speaks at TEDxSarasota. Clyde is a self-educated photographer who works with antique cameras to create work with an emphasis on conservation. He explains how creativity and persistence allowed him to design processes to shoot, develop, and print his photographs, which often measure 5'x7'. The beauty and importance of Clyde's photography has generated widespread recognition resulting in many museum exhibits and high honors. Clyde has also completed six Public Broadcasting programs on the environment of Florida, with three of them being award-winning documentaries. This talk is part of TEDxSarasota's inaugural conference held on 12/12/12 with the theme "Creativity Matters" at the Historic Asolo Theatre in Sarasota, Florida.
ABOUT TEDx: In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Clyde is my absolute favorite photographer. I will never even closely approach his artful creativity and knowledge of nature. But he has been an inspiration to me to learn a little more about both. Without his influence , I would never have tried either. Thanks, Clyde.

I love this man and his mission. Even after his stroke, still going strong. An inspiration for so many reasons.

If you ever get to see his large photos in person, it will change you. They open a wall into a beautiful, peaceful world. You feel like you could take a step into it and leave this world of distracting color and noise. The large print he shows is only medium sized. Nice to hear about the emotional and technical journey that lead him to creating such beauty.

It is very clearly not a question of color or B&W it is a question if your technique works for you and the subject. Not forgetting the audience, of course.
If it is done 100% good and it talks, that's it. You done it 110% good.

I don't know how in US, but here in Europe color papers for silverprints are no longer available, so B&W is the only option.
