I mentioned Daan Hansen a few shows back, but I want to give him is own episode today.
Daan was an amazing spirit, intense fan of photography, a kind soul and an excellent photographer. I had the pleasure of knowing Daan and he was a fan of this show.
A great deal of Daan's work I did not see until after his death. Part of me is angry with myself for not exploring my friend further because Daan was good. He was intensely good.
Daan fits right into the contribution of well known Dutch photographers from Anton Corbijn and Rineke Dikstra. He's shows a nod to his own heritage, but embraced the communal aspects of the internet over the gallery. Those of us who's lives were touched by Daan are very lucky. I want to share Daan with the world in this podcast episode.
Special thanks to his sister Babet for sending me the book. I wanted to share the book with you all in this video. Its amazing.
I don't comment much, but I've seen every episode of the Art of Photography, and learned a great deal.
This was a most moving video which has inspired me to improve my photography and to spend more time on it.
Your video has shown to us all that there are great unsung photographers out there who deserve a larger audience.
Thanks for sharing it.
You're an incredible speaker. Sorry for the loss of your friend. Beautiful photographs...
I have watched all your shows and I love them. I have learnt so much. Today's episode though was incredibly touching and sweet. I never knew Daan, but boy, that guy could take amazing photos. Thank you for sharing his work with us.
You made me cry. its sweet to see you love your friend. Thanks for sharing.
You have honored Daan very well. You have a great program that has inspired me a great deal. You are honoring the photographic art a great service.
what a beautiful video, thank you for sharing Daan's story and his work. Rest in Peace
I've been watching and truly enjoying some of the shows in here on and off for a few months and this show had a unique feel to it. It felt warm and intimate in a way that was very helpful in understanding more about the photographer and about photography itself.
I particularly appreciated the emphasis on how Daan did not limit himself to one specific photography realm. The result is true to the person in all of his complexities.
Thank you!
this is by far my favourite episode that you've made, not only LOVE the work but the story is just beautiful
I always come back to your channel and this series on The Art of Photography, for grounding and renewing inspiration. Its a huge gift you’ve given us. Thank you! Craig
thank you, Ted, of sharing his work with us. It makes me think, a few months from my 42d birthday... beautiful work and a very nearby feel, since I simply can read the language... And also thanks to you yourself, sharing so much to the world. Thank you so much.
Spectacular video! This is my favorite Art of Photography episode to date. It was so touching, moved me to tears. Not only did it turn me on to another great photographer, it was a wonderful display of the emotional power of art. Thank you Ted!
Much respect to your love for your friend. I just learned about your channel and my life is being enriched through your thoughtful instruction and musings.
Very moving. I myself struggled emotionally to get through your heartfelt tribute. I can only imagine how challenging it was for you.
Thanks for the introduction to Mr Hansen's artistry and genius. He couldn't have asked for a better legacy.
Thank you for posting this Ted. Daan's work is so inspirational.
What a joy to see such excellent work from a contemporary photographer! You certainly did him well with this tribute episode. Thanks for sharing his work with us. Lewis
Before you even start this, I love it. It's a really nice tribute to make this video. He's a really great photographer too, just, all around a great episode.
What a talented man he was ... and what a graceful tribute you've made, Ted.
I'm sure Daan could have become one of the really well known photographers, with his wonderful eye, his sense of play, and that human quality (hard to pin down) that comes through in every image. Maybe that can still happen, posthumously.
Wonderful that you're doing your bit towards that end, Ted.
Chas Rosenthal Thanks Chas
Beautiful. Thank for introducing Daan to the world. And a general thanks for all the videos. By far the most in depth and interesting UA-cam channel around. Genius, and I don't use that word lightly.
Ted, well done! Good for you to use your following as a tribute to Daan, a great photographer / artist and I really enjoyed seeing his work! Sad story, sincere condolences to the family...!
Rest in peace Daan, and thank you Ted for doing this video so that newcomers like me can appreciate his work.
Great episode and tribute Ted!! loved his work and how eclectic he was!! his treat of colours and his point of view at shooting were my favourite!! plus the way the put together his work in this stunning book!!
Moving episode. Incredibly inspiring work by a talented man.
What a wonderfull video Ted. Such a fantastic body of work. I have only been watching your videos for the past month but you have a way with talking about photography that is very inspiring and moving. Thank you
Very touching tribute, Ted. Thanks for sharing on all levels.
Please... no apologies necessary. This is one of your most beautiful episodes, in my opinion. Very touching, and a wonderful tribute to your friend.
Possibly one of the best channels on youtube on photography. I really enjoy the inspiration.
Dear Ted, thank you so much for this moving tribute to the photographer Daan and his works. When you showed Daan's photo on the right at 13:40 at once it reminded me of the beautiful painting 'The Return of the Prodigal Son' by Rembrandt. The dark colour embracing the red, orange and yellow colours. The light. The warmth. The whole feel of Daan's photo feels just like Rembrandt's painting. It feels as a loving tribute to Rembrandt 💛
A beautiful tribute Ted. Thank you for presenting Daan's work to me.
That was such a dignified tribute. Also, what a great range of talent from the guy. Inspires me to step out of my comfort zone.
Really a very poignant episode which really underlines why I love your channel so much. Keep up the good work - I'm sure Daan is very honored to be featured.
Aw Ted. What a difficult show to have had to compose but you did a beautiful job and I'm so pleased to have watched it. Thank you for sharing. Hugs.
Great tribute Ted. What a great photographer, and story. There's something to be learned here. We really should make the most of life and be grateful for the things we have.
Wonderful episode. Thank you for sharing Dan's beautiful images
A gifted photographer. Thank you Ted for introducing this amazing work to me.
Ted Absolutely Beautiful.Very touching Appreciate you sharing this.Awesome tribute Thanks so much Deb.🙏
Great episode. Enjoyed seeing Daan's range of work.
The internet shows us that the world is full of talented people, such as Dan. Artists creating art for all of the right reasons, which will always outshine commercial pandering.
Keep seeing the world through your own special lens. ✌🏻🥳
In addition to the wonderful content, your sincerity is much appreciated.
"Passie voor beelden" actually means: "passion for images" . But you probably figured that out by now... Anyhow, nice story about a nice photographer, thanks for sharing.
Gut means good. Not intestine.
Great show Ted! I really enjoyed Daan's work and your sincerity in presenting it. I think I'll grab my camera and go shoot today. Thanks for all you do!
this episode really moved me. you are a great friend
Never apologize for being passionate about friends or their work and never apologize for lengthy posts. There are many of us who can’t get enough of this content. Have a great day.
yeah you're awesome I've learned a lot too. you know so much about photography history and masters. you´re so appreciative of art. I had lost my account for years and recovered it and im watching your videos again and really enjoying them. I love that youve done Latin American photographers. you're an awesome photography geek, thank you! keep it up please :)
Thank you very much for this video. It gave me inspiration that I have been seeking.
Love your show so inspiring.. I have learned so much about so many incredible photograhers Thank you..
It pains me to see a photographer, especially in my lifetime, to pass. I am glad Daan and his family put together this book. Although we are sometimes our worst critics and refuse to share some photos, I'm glad he ultimately chosen some of these wonderful compositions to make it in this book. Although I have never known this man, I feel a bit of his wonderful personality from these selections and surely he will live on from this stunning book and your tribute. Thanks for sharing your thoughts Ted.
really loved this, touching story and phenomenal work
What a wonderful photographer. This is a very inspirational video. Thank you Ted.
Henry Stampfel
Sensible presentation...superb shots. Thanks for sharing...
Its a shame that artists like Daan are not appreciated until they pass on :-(
I have noticed (through experience) that, if you say that you will 'catch up and go for a coffee' with someone, and you don't! you might (at times) regret not doing so because they are not here anymore!! We live our lives thinking things and people will always be here! but the sad reality is that's just not true! We all love art and the people that make art, what ever that art may be!! BUT why do we wait for them to pass away before we appreciate the work they do and the people they are?? We are all guilty of it! Me included!!
Note to self!...... DO what you say you are going to do AND take note of your friends and loved ones loves and interests!!
Excellent Video Ted :-) Brought a lump to my throat and a couple of tears to my eyes.
Inspiring as always, esp. since I live in Utrecht myself (the cover pic is great for example, but I also know it as a place where I used to date)... Like many others here it also makes me think about putting photos out there on paper in some form. And since your earlier episodes inspired me to finally set up a dark room and use film again, starting to make some prints again of make some nice holiday gifts is a good start. By the way, do post an update on your online gallery some day ;) Anyway: great episode, also because Daan Hansen seems like such a modest person with such a great passion.
As a Dutch Amateur photographer I feel a little ashamed I didn't know Daan. I'm very pleased you did this video and I'll sure check on his book on Blurb.
For being Dutch I was able to read the text in the book. Your description was spot on but with the right translation I think you would understand more of his work. If you want to, I'll be glad to help
Nice to see some Dutch influence on the show even within a very sad context. Passion for Images....
Also, nice homage to Daan this video. Well done Ted!
Thanks Ted for this tribute.
MORE of showing unknown photographers work!!! very inspiring.
Great job Ted, still seems unreal to know Daan is gone. Please let everyone know if they do release a paperback version of the book.
Beautiful. Thanks for this.
Amazing work by a very gifted photographer and a very fitting tribute! :-) Definitely a photographer to be inspired by...and also just a bit envious of the abundance of his talents.
Agreed Tomas
theartofphotography
Seeing that book makes me realize I too need to put a book together...if only for personal use. The layout of that thing was awesome. :)
You should Tomas - and yes, Daan's book is beautiful!
Good job putting your friend out there. RIP.
Really, really great episode (like always)! I'm totally enjoying his work. Oh and "passie voor beelden" means passion for pictures and "gut" is german for well/good :) Keep up your fantastic work!
Thanks Epiqo
I'm sorry for your loss. God bless.
I think it was a german bag with "Gut.", it means "good" ;)
Hi Ted, thank you for this video, one thing that stands out in this one is that it’s fine to have a wide range/type of photos as long as it is true good photography. I recently archived multiple of my photographs on Instagram because they were not consistent with the genre i want to fit myself into, but in my heart i know they are good photos, this episode helped me publish them again and be more truthful to myself and honest about my work. If possible please make an episode on why it’s ok to keep your genre wide open in the beginning, i think many of us starters see the work of established photographers and try to fit ourselves into a genre which we ‘think’ we are meant to be good at, i feel this would be an important message and a great tribute to Daan. Thank you for all that you do . @roshclicks from India.
Beautiful tribute
Wow great work. Loved it thank you.
Hey, nice video. Going by some of the photo's that show showed from Daan book, he is good, and should serve for inspiration for people to go out and take photo's. Even for people like my self that do it as hobby. With respect from Adelaide, Australia.
Great tribute. Rest In Peace
superb images. rest in peace Daan
You were lucky to have had such a wonderful friend.. Not all of us are so lucky..

An amazing artist

Thank you for this video. Inspiring & motivational. Make use of the time, even (especially?) during lockdown.
This video also introduced me to a new poet--Ingmar Heytze! His is the poem in the forward of the book. Lovely poem.
I was able to view Daan's work on the beautiful site daanhansen.nl
What a treat. So glad I discovered your videos.
This guy was great every picture in the book has stopping power

Can't seem to find the book anywhere. I've looked everywhere. Anyone know where I can find it?
How many different pairs of glasses does this guy own? They seem to change from episode to episode . . .
That was beautiful
Thank you...
Awesome pictures. Really love this book.
Just wanted to let you know that the writing on the red shopping bag isnt English, instead it's German and stands for good.

WOW what a True Loss to Art. He was a true artist. God Bless HIM.
It is a RESPECT that we feel .Bless the painters of light. It's just we are faster than those with pigment 😁
Hey Ted the link you provided in your email didn't work ..says "We're sorry but that page could not be found."(theartofphotography.tv/episodes/162-daan-hansen/)
Anyone played the video with no sound? It's kind of addicted 😂
Was that not German for good. Gut?
Yeah, I know a little German and I hadn't thought to pronounce it in English. I just assumed it was taken in Germany.
Ted maybe you could ad the website about Daan to the description of this episode?
