    Thank you for the clear and concise video! I'm going to raise some coturnix quail in my back yard this year after having a ton of fun with chickens. Good video. Lots of good information for a starter like me. I bought a chicken plucker from my friend, sight unseen. He dropped it off today and while it’ll do a chicken at a time, it’s much better suited for quail and pheasant. I’ve started looked for hatcheries and pricing different quail out. Later today I’ll start clearing a space for cages and start building them.
    Keep up the good with y’all.

    Thank you for sharing! As I am adapting to this changed world, I am seriously considering these quail as a major protein source. (As in feed my family). Your video has been very helpful. Here are some info needs that I need serious help with:
    How you built your cage system -as much detail as you can?
    What do you recommend for a low waste feeder? If you made it, how did you make it?
    How much time per day does it take to do quail-related chores? And then how much time on the weekends?
    So far I’m not finding people who consider quail as a cornerstone of their backyard food operation AND they have been doing it for a good while?(Which is evidence that the concept is proven and worth the time/effort/ROI.)
    Also, what part of the world do you live in so I can get an idea of the weather you are dealing with in winter and summer?
    Hope you can do some videos on these sorts of things. Either way, thanks for what you’ve done.
    Thanks again,
    Dave

      Hi Dave, those are all good questions and are ones that we can address in future videos. As to where we live: we live in Virginia. These birds can also withstand sub 0 temps as long as they have shelter from the elements.

      @@homesteadevolution I have the same questions and want some of the same information answered. I got the size of floor of cage 2 ft X 4 ft but I need the height of cage. I am building the cages now so please help. I live outside of Austin, TX. I already have the shelving unit that you have and would like to get started as soon as I can get the cages built. How does the outside feeders work and what are they made of? Is the hardware cloth 1/2 inch X 1/2 inch on the floor and walls and top all the same size? Thank you.

    • @homesteadevolution
      @homesteadevolution  4 роки тому

      @@lynnhowdeshell2641 the height of the cage is 8". The floor wire is 14g ½x1 vinyl coated wire. The front, back, and top are 1x2 and the sides and divider are what never you want to use. We use what ever scrap we have leftover. The feeder is 2" PVC mounted to the front with a section cut out of it using a table saw

    Thanks for the video! My wife and I decided to make the leap and put the money down on 50 chicks to start. We are building up our own battery cage grow out pen and then a battery breeder. Lots of great info for the starter homesteader! We live in an apartment above our business in a commercial building. We are planning on keeping them in our sun room that leads out to the balcony where we have set up some fabric raised beds and grow bags. Could you give me an estimate of the volume of manure that approximately 120 birds will put out per month? We are planning on using barrel composters to process the waste to reuse and sell locally. We have plenty of space to keep them but I want to make sure we have enough barrels to keep up. Thanks for any help you can give us. God Bless!

    • @homesteadevolution

    • @TheShalomstead
      @TheShalomstead 4 роки тому +1

      Homestead Evolution I was planning on using something like dry peat moss. It’s locally available and i like the consistency of the compost it creates. When/if I need to use an alternative, I’ll be using shredded paper. We live above our business and Lord knows we have plenty of scrap paper. I’m also planning on starting a worm farm or two to handle our food wastes. Thanks for the response!

      They will need ventilation. They handle cold better than heat. Anything over 80⁰ inside their area and we use a swamp cooler. We have intake and exhaust fans running 24-7. The only time we had a humidity problem is when it went to 100% as the electric went out and the fans went down.

      That is always the hard spot however if you treat the birds good while raising them knowing that they are being raised to feed you and your family it is still hard but something that needs to be done or you will be feeding g a lot of roos that are only going to be costing you money in feed. You could donate them to a wildlife rehabilitator or sell them to someone else that wants them for their freezer. We raise them knowing that they will only have 1 bad day

      You can buy much nicer ones at local pet stores rather than big companies like petsmart or Petco (at least in mine I find stuff a bit cheaper)

    May I ask, if you have layers for a while, will they get tough? Can you keep layers for a while then butcher? How do you manage having some quail for eggs, and some for meat? Would you have to just use the old ones for soup? Just for our family, not to sell. Thanks 🌷

      We rotate all of our birds out at 12 months. We have had kept layers for 5 years before we started keeping Quail on a larger scale and they laid great for the first 3 years then slowed down. We have not noticed any difference in the meat as we brine for 48 hrs before cooking or freezing. We use our layers that are rotated out for meat and we also use all the extra males for meat. We suggest keeping 1 male to 5-6 hens so when you hatch you will always have extra males. I hope this helps

    So just curious what if we use this for a staff meat source for our family on a small scale? Is inbreeding a thing with quail? if so How do I make sure parents aren't mating with their young? Does this make sense

    • @homesteadevolution
      @homesteadevolution  Рік тому

      We use them as a food source. You can breed within a line for many generations without issues. You can also Spiral breed meaning you keep 3 different copies and when you hatch you pit the roos from one bunch Ober the hens of another. There is a great explanation of spiral breeding on Coturnix Corner UA-cam channel

      No it is not recommended as chickens carry diseases that don't emaffect them but will kill quail

    Lastly l will be sending my own self addressed envelop for you to send me those leaflets in the UK. Thank you

      @@homesteadevolution thanks for responding so quickly... I was just talking to my husband about my quail ideas. Am I right in thinking that because they start laying so young that they stop laying earlier than chickens? I am thinking we can use the eggs or feed them (the eggs) when they’re laying becomes sporadic is when we feed the birds to them. ♥️🙏👍🇺🇸🤓

      These quail will lay up to 300 eggs per year like a chicken. We rotate ours out every 12 months during to the heavy breeding that we do to obtain quality hatching eggs. We have had the produce eggs up to 3 years before production drops when not in a heavy breeding program. The eggs are also higher in protein than a chicken egg

    How do you choose which ones to use for meat and the ones to use for eggs?

    • @homesteadevolution
      @homesteadevolution  3 роки тому

      We have a weight requirement for our breeder stock. We also look at legs, feet and toes for deformity, and the clearness of the eyes. We also check for breast firmness in both males and females. The rest go to meat.

      @@homesteadevolution yes and yes. If possible, I'd rather keep them where their care is the most convenient. They might handle freezing Chicago winters, but I don't want to traipse through x feet of snow to check feed, water, etc.

    • @homesteadevolution
      @homesteadevolution  3 роки тому

      The smell can be horrible. It is dependant on the feed given and the cleaning done. We have eliminated the smell factor by using an all grain certified Non-GMO feed. If you feed commercial feed there will be a bad ammonia smell. As to the weather. They can tolerate sub 0 as long as they can get completely out of the elements an enclosed area with a small opening would suffice. I personally would not keep quail inside the house long term as the dander gets thick quick.

    How much do you have to sell a quail for to cover your cost and make a profit? Are there restrictions for selling butchered birds?

    • @homesteadevolution
      @homesteadevolution  4 роки тому

      That is a broad ranged question. It is completely dependent on several factors. The first is the cost of feed in your area. Another factor is the market. You could have a very low cost feed and no market so you would have to sell low. If you had a high cost feed and a large market you still may not sell due to high costs. Here we are lucky to have a reasonable feed cost as we buy ½ ton at a time and a very good market. We sell day old chicks for $2.00 each and they go up each week from there. A mature laying hen is $10.00. We do most of our sales in egg production. As to Meat regulations, it is different in every state and sometimes different within the state by locality. Check with your local Office of Meat and Poultry.
