Summary:
Recorded just over a year after Santana played its historic Woodstock Music & Art Fair performance, the band was fast becoming one of the biggest in the world. They were about to release their second album, Abraxas, and were riding high on the heels of three hit songs from their debut album and a new Top 10 hit, a cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Black Magic Woman."
A year earlier - in fact only a few days before the Woodstock Festival - Bill Graham staged the first of several concerts billed as "The Fillmore at Tanglewood." Tanglewood is the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the storied venue had just begun to experiment with staging contemporary concerts on their grounds. Staging a rock concert in a classical venue had yet to be done, so of course the concept of doing so excited Graham. He brought the full-scale Fillmore East production team in, including the Joshua Light Show, and booked a great lineup. This first concert featured B.B King, Jefferson Airplane and The Who, and drew the largest crowd that Tanglewood had ever seen by far.
Buoyed by the event's success, Tanglewood and Graham agreed to stage three similar dates in 1970. The last of these is this show, when Santana headlined after The Voices of East Harlem and the legendary Miles Davis had played (you can hear Mile's set here).
This historic and beautifully recorded performance features a smoking performance by Santana in the last year of their classic lineup, before a young Neal Schon joined the band. We think you'll agree it's an incredible performance by a great band in their prime.
this song is like a good book, first it starts off fast, rock, then the guitar slows down and hits some sad notes then it goes into some nice rythem then slows down again into those sad notes, one of my favorite.
Yes, this song is magic, I think that everytime I watch this video. Nobody had ever done music like this before. Santana was the most unique band I ever heard. What I like about the band is how "diverse" it was, music brings us together, as Santana has proven his whole career.
Same here; the tempo change makes me melt every time. Beautiful song.
I bought the Abraxis album without ever hearing a single song from it. These guys were new, but I could see that they were great. I was not disappointed.
Me too
. A FANTASY Duet with Shakira & Santana ??? To all my SANTANA FANS / HELP GET THIS SONG TO HIM We will all be blessed ua-cam.com/video/elDqbtzVpJc/v-deo.html
@@terrylarrabee3807 The album cover ....
Word
I heard one tune....completely blown away. Bought the Album Abraxas. hooked ever since. Thanks Carlos.
Miles Davis said this was the greatest rock song ever written. Hard to disagree.
paul sandoval just cause you don't agree he stupid, go fuck yourself
Yeah, so many layers to this jam. I can hear some rock, jazz, blues, and samba infusions. Beautiful.
Where did you read or heard that?
Sorry
Though I might argue it isn't really a rock song. Well, it's great whatever it is.
This has always been my favorite Santana song
Spot on man ❤
If I was forced to name my 2 favorite Santana songs, I would say this & "Samba Pa Ti". . .
Jeez, what was in the air back then there was just so much magical music and artists at that time. Amazing,
LSD
it's not was in the air back then/ it's called playing with your soul truly playing from your heart and being true to it having a passion like no other life coming across music and music be coming your life this may never happen again.
People weren't scared to express themselves
@@robertmartinez6544 I agree, it was passion but people can today still create and carry Santana's legacy.
People practiced hard and developed into fine musicians back then.
Abraxas was in constant play in our dorm room back in 1970 along with Bitches Brew. Same artist did the cover art (Abdul Mati Klarwein). According to the article on Wikipedia "Abraxas was deemed "culturally, historically, or artistically significant" by the Library of Congress and was selected for preservation in their National Recording Registry in 2016."
Greg Rolli magical on keyboards.i love his way of playing
G-R-E-G-G R-O-L-L-I-E, aka, "Mr.Free!!"
You are exactly right, Rolli after playing with Carlitos went with Neal Schon and formed JOURNEY oh yeah!
@@MannyGonzalezReyna Journey (early) was good, until Steve Perry ruined the band
Santana without Greg Rolie was not the same. This lineup was the greatest🎸👏👏
You may well believe that but the band was named SANTANA not ROLIE. I love any version that had Chepito and Michael Shrieve... up to and including the Leon Thomas version. Carlos kept growing and I kinda think Rolie was on a different wavelength.
Santana got jazzier and Rolie got Journey.
True.....I'll throw in Doug Rauch on bass too. He could make that bass breathe and gave it a heartbeat. @@FramrodLiggins
@@jimdep6542 ..yep Dougie Rauch was a beast. He was the best bass player Santana ever had.
@@FramrodLiggins Yep....I got to see him play live with Santana in 73. I only knew his name from Caravanarai.....I didn't have Welcome yet, so I didn't know what he looked like. I was blown away by his playing...and still am to this day.
@@FramrodLiggins Along with Doug Rauch, I can't forget about Richard Kermode either. He added a lot of energy and some great Latin grooves on the Rhodes piano. Coster was good too, but once Richard left, a few months later when I saw Santana live again, there was a huge hole missing in the keyboard department.
Once again ,this was the concert of their life, believe me
Post Woodstock, and the audio is excellent...
You are right, the Woodstock audio was not as good, this is just genuinely majestic.
That is why every guitar player needs a guitar with p90’s. Amazing....sound soft at times and just the right amount of dirt when needed.
and fender tube amps

The best Latin rock music ever played in this planet
Latin jazz .
Outstanding.I can't believe there are 11 people on the world who could dislike this.
Best Santana group ever!
Dave Brown was the direct truth!! Nice Bass!!
One of my favourite songs of Santana. Beautifully played from beginning to the end
The incomparable Jose Chepito Areas on Timbales.
This band was incredible and dynamic beyond anything that was happening in rock at that time.
chepito gave me a lifetime love of timbales!!
to this day, there is no band at that level.
I was 3 years of age when this came out, I remember when I first heard this album at the age of 5 - I’ve had this album since I was 7 - it was a Christmas present. This whole album is just perfect and it transcends time.
The original Santana band was the most "powerful " band i ever heard. 3 drummers laid down an energy that was unsurpassed. They played past Atlanta's nightly curfew and the power was cut. The drummers kept playing until the power was turned back on and they could finish. Very impressive!
An enjoyment watching (listening)to the original group performing. These uploads have given us Time Travel into the past of almost 50 years and tells us that good music never ages.
I've seen Carlos and his band live 40 times or so, from 1971 to 2019, and they never play this song the same way twice. Supreme musicianship.
Right on
absolute magic. Incredible piece of music, performed by a group beyond compare.
I bought abraxas when it was first released , I'm still struck by the early recordings that covered maybe 6 albums they are unique and outstanding. Thanks for the memory.
What fine musicians , I bought this vinyl album when it was first released many years ago . Still just as captivating . I think this pioneered rock ,jazz ,and Latin into magical fusion .
This was the sound of growing up in East Los Angeles in the late sixties.
Indeed it was Vicki, ELA, Whittier Blvd, Oye Como VA!
This wonderful instrumental takes me back to my youth and Pacoima Junior High School in 1970!
Us Chicanos were very proud of Carlos and Santana.
Abraxas was released that year and you'd see low riders driving around in their '64 Chevrolet Impalas with "Black Magic Woman" painted on the hoods of cars.
This instrumental takes me back to wonderful days strolling through the outdoor grounds of the school seeing the students going to classes.
That slow part in the song was, I believe, borrowed from Hugh Masekela's "Grazin' In The Grass"!
My boss grew up in Pacoima in the 50's and he actually saw Ritchie Valens playing and singing to a group of people outside some shops!
One of my favorite Santana tunes ! Love the transitions from Afro into a Chacha and then ending with a Bolero. Outstanding composition and arrangement. And I tip my hat to the audio engineer for a superb mastering job...
LOVE this song ! Trivia : Incident at Neshabur was recorded during sessions for the prior album, the debut album, but moved to Abraxas. Great version at Tanglewood, nice groove at the end with Greg Rolle's riff on organ. Goddamn were they good .....
Yes very beautiful music ❤❤
I agree this is a fabulous song, I have been listening to it for 50 years! .Never tire of it, it is a jazz song, but also a rock song, and it has this latin beat that is just so great, I like the way slows down at the end, it's such a beautiful ending, so hopeful. Only God could inspire music this great!
SANTANA’S ORIGINAL LINE - UP SET THE TONE FOR THE FIRST 3 - ALBUMS , WITH ALL DUE RESPECT TO THE MUSICIANS THAT HAVE COME AND GONE THAT GAVE THE WORLD ALOT OF GLORY !!!
I grew up during this time.... I remember many if these concerts and I own much of the vinyl recordings of many live shows, like this one. Still, it's hard not to watch a fabulous piece of musical history like this and smile. I know that I'm on my way out, and that's ok, but I can leave knowing that I lived during one of the greatest times in human history!
When I hear this, I still say the same exact thing I said back in 1970 when I first heard it. WOW!
This is one of my favorite tunes from the Abraxas album. The tune is amazing, from start to finish.
I love this song so much, it gives me goosebumps every time I hear it... In fact sometimes it brings tears to eyes! G O A T
Just to tell that Mexican people may have a little few successful and well recognized Artists around the world,, Carlos Santana is one of those and I'm proud of this gorgeous composer.. Carlitos, thanks...!
San Antonio , Texas , still jammin to Santana , i'm 64 years young 🌱
Brilliant genius.
That “Abraxas “ guitar tone is sublime ……remember buying the album in the early seventies as a teenager.. great times .
I’m so glad I’m old enough now to have been young enough back then….Viva Carlos.
. A FANTASY Duet with Shakira & Santana ??? To all my SANTANA FANS / HELP GET THIS SONG TO HIM We will all be blessed ua-cam.com/video/elDqbtzVpJc/v-deo.html
A masterpiece, when only the great majority of the rock singer, were white American, Santana opened the door to forever.
It's PERFECT.
I was at this concert, stumbling around in the dark. I had a great time, sadly, out on the lawn, I missed a lot of the music. Oh well, I lived to hear a lot of amazing stuff in my life, and it’s not over yet. I’m going to hear the fabulous Marty Stuart in a month. Catch him if you can. Best band in America in 2020, promise.
I've seen Mary Stuart at least a dozen times over the years. He & his Fabulous Superlatives are nothing short of fantastic.
Marty Stuart..a guy that can play like that virtually unknown to most..something not right here.
Yes, I agree, still jamming out to it
vivaaaaa mexicoooo vivaaaaa carlos Santana..simon👏😍😎
Amazing Carlos Santana. Greetings from Brasil.
Majestuoso!!
Thank God for the good fine music and those great musicians!
How I wish I were there. Amazing.
This guitar sound is just insane!
🤩
...2:46-3:39 Carlos literally created magic.
I so agree, how can someone so young play so freakin beautifully. Unreal. So much insanely good music back then.
Great music
I agree magic beyond magic
Absolutely Beautiful ❤️ Carlos is so underrated.
Beautiful-kinda like the moon illuminating over the Ocean-Incredible Tone...
One of the all time best pieces of music
Everyone was awesome! What a band! What a song!
ah such a great performance, as good as the record or better, always takes me away to a Summer's eve at a friends, when I first heard this song, good vibes
One of their greatest creations👍
You awesome my guitar King . Stay strong Keep shining
Much love from Africa 🙏❤❤❤
it is sublime
The last part solo is exceptional, maybe the reason why so many people say it is the best Carlitos song. I think he has many good ones.
Don't know what Carlos considers his country of origin, regardless of what he states we as Mexicans are proud of him.
Yeah, it's amazing stuff. Good comment.
Who’s still watching in January 2021 over 50 yrs later🙂🙂🙂👍👍👍
Me in 2023😊😊😊😊
What a f***ing Masterpiece!
I think the pinnacle of live performances of this song was done on the Japan Lotus tour. Talk about a magical moment in time! A stellar performance!
I'm a santana purist,I would rather listen to these tanglewood concert. Love this lineup and sound. Later band was technically advanced but I prefer this band.
Wow 😳Amazing performance!!
Outstanding master class of music!
Greg Rolie magnificent keyboards!
They are magnificent - excellent musicians

This song is a journey...of which I do not want to return...
Carlos saw Miles live He was blown away! That became Caravanserai!
No kidding?🤗
Great sound quality and the band was tight. My favorite live video of this song.
I love the sound of the Hammond organ
Nobody, and I mean nobody, drives a B3 like Gregg Rollie!
Brings chills down my spine ... Long live la Raza ❗️🖤
mi cancion preferida exelente
We've lost a lot this year. Neil and Eddie got me down. I pray Carlos stays with us forever. He remains an open channel to the godhead here on earth.
Such a beautiful track ❤😊😊
Love and miss you uncle Albert. R.I.P., miss yer piano playing in da casa.
freedom of the soul to fly!
