Summary:
Recorded just over a year after Santana played its historic Woodstock Music & Art Fair performance, the band was fast becoming one of the biggest in the world. They were about to release their second album, Abraxas, and were riding high on the heels of three hit songs from their debut album and a new Top 10 hit, a cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Black Magic Woman."
A year earlier - in fact only a few days before the Woodstock Festival - Bill Graham staged the first of several concerts billed as "The Fillmore at Tanglewood." Tanglewood is the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the storied venue had just begun to experiment with staging contemporary concerts on their grounds. Staging a rock concert in a classical venue had yet to be done, so of course the concept of doing so excited Graham. He brought the full-scale Fillmore East production team in, including the Joshua Light Show, and booked a great lineup. This first concert featured B.B King, Jefferson Airplane and The Who, and drew the largest crowd that Tanglewood had ever seen by far.
Buoyed by the event's success, Tanglewood and Graham agreed to stage three similar dates in 1970. The last of these is this show, when Santana headlined after The Voices of East Harlem and the legendary Miles Davis had played (you can hear Mile's set here).
This historic and beautifully recorded performance features a smoking performance by Santana in the last year of their classic lineup, before a young Neal Schon joined the band. We think you'll agree it's an incredible performance by a great band in their prime.
I was there! Rode my bike from Southington CT. to see this concert.
Wow
Tanglewood is a great place to see a concert, especially that one. It was worth your peddling.
Awesome
Lucky you are.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
The greatest Santana lineup.
A percussion master class was rendered in this performance
Chepito Areas.... always a professional
Amen - many youtube videos of his amazing performances until he passed. In God's hands now and playing - every night!!!@@samisamsam4104
the most 'underrated?' David Brown. Bassist that held the ensemble together - each was so independent - but he held it together. God bless him -
The best Santana band in my opinion.wish they were still together.
They did get back together and made one album. Also did a few concerts. Soul Sacrifice and Samba Pa Ti, live one youtube I think the concert is in Las Vegas. A couple of years ago
Watch "Journey through time" videos on youtube. Gregg Rolie and Neil Schon doing Santana songs...excellent
check out Abraxas Pool ...... original Santana line up without Carlos.. great CD. ua-cam.com/video/iqv67d7MKOs/v-deo.htmlsi=v-kTwWI2dssxUQqF
My favourite guitar player, drummer and keyboard player, all in the one band !!!
Couldn't agree more, Greg, Carlos and Michael Shrieve among the greatest trio in rock history.. Carabello and other percussionists are unbelievable too...
That's how we played in the seventies just plain skill n feel
Santana had an OP band there is just too much talent here, it's amazing.
Epic! The best Santana band in my opinion.
Mine too!
Real Santana. None of that silly pop stuff with different pop singers.
😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂✌✌✌👍
yes yes!
Not just your opinion, FACT!
Even though Santana himself is a mediocre guitar player, he sure knew how to put a group together and put on a show!
And let me express this PROFUNDITY to you," IMPROVISATION" is THE KEY TO LIFE !!! JAM ON BROTHER CARLOS FROM ANOTHER MISSION DISTRICT SON.
Please someone fly me back to the seventies please. i'm getting sick of these times today !
. . Es facil sr. Jhoan . . . Solo fumese un churro. . .de esa hierba alta y escondida . . .y de seguro regresa a los 70's . .ya es legal . . .Buen viaje ! !
And here we are a year later in late 2020 the year where "sick of these times" takes a turn for the real. Yeah, I want back too, reserve a seat for me on that flight to the sunnier days of that fabulous decade.
Me too
I remember seeing this group at the Fillmore West S.F & Winterland S.F. They never disappoint on their LIVE shows.
Absolutely superb for something almost 50 years old.
Time doesn't matter in music. I mean, age :)
I bet some people still don't realize how tight this band was.
50 years old now and it's still some of the finest jammin' to date!
@@moussetache1815 Tightest band I ever saw.

Santana at it´s best. No words.
Vintage Santana with the original line-up. I still have the first 3 albums from that time and it's good to hear them again. Fond memories from halcyon days.
These guys had it going and they knew it. Awesome.
Man who make guitar cry.....God!
No made his guitar dance.
Santana's original band...the best in the history
Chepito was awesome!!!
Isn't he always!
Yeah, this is the original Santana band as far as I'm concerned, Abraxas was the first Santana album I ever heard and it just blew me a way, something totally new and different, but hot,,passionate stuff, tight, the live show is really tight, so close to the feel of that album, but come to life , live and rockin. Got to credit the genius use of percussion, and the players, man they strike up some rhythms and hold em down, the bass just keeping that solid bottom, wild musical transformations. Wonder how Carlos has all those, I think Fender Twin reverbs, like 6 of em, wonder how they're set up, he gets that signature sound ya know
😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌👍👍👍👍👍🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂
Just missing Neal Schon in this set.
It's the original Santana band as far as anyone is concerned.
@@2680jbrinks I don't miss him.
Man that makes you wonder where that tiny percussionist draws his indefatigable energy from, not to mention his impressive talent.
Goddamn Chepito was killin' that solo. The whole band was on fire but yeeeesh Areas went IN!!!
LOVE This Line Up of The Old SANTANA , So much Happy Memories Happy Times in The Bay👍

Incredible energy, phenomenal playing by the band and Carlos...
Michael Srieves here!!!!THE DRUMMER.SI YOUNG!!!!
I wish I could hear the whole fantastic band play, but just spotlight Michael Shrieve the whole time.
Il periodo migliore di questa fantastica band!
Now THAT'S music!Love the amazing percussion that is always a Santana.feature.
Chepito, in 1970!!!, crushing it, killing it, opening the brains to a fantastic sound from the people of Nicaragua. Should've been there but I was in High School, no internet, so I didn't even know this concert was happening. What a joy, too bad he and Santana could not resolve their differences. Just tragic.
Good Sound Quality !!!! Santana The Woodstocks Best Band .
This is so, so good.
This is absolutely fantastic
Extraordinary musicians!
La mejor banda de Santana
Not many bands did this and not ever ... this is what bands should aspire to do
One of Santana's all time best songs!
😎😎😎😎😎😎😃😎😎😎🙂🙂🙂👍✌✌✌✌✌👍👍👍
Classic Tanglewood performance!
INCREDIBLE AS ALWAYS ............ UNIQUE BAND & STYLE .... HAIL SANTANA THE KING
Grandioso concierto ,por los grandes...yo aún no había nacido cuando se celebró éste concierto
my Lord, Chepito & Greg Rollie wow!
The way Carlos describes Chepito's timbales playing in his book sounded so right: he said something like.. it's tall steel reinforcement pillars that hold up sky scrapers and that's what his perfect spot on tempo and whatever the other technical terms is!
GREG ROLLIE, THE BASSIST SANATANA AND DRUMMER HERE WHO PLAYED AT WOODSTOCK SOUL SACRIFICE IS ULTIMATE.
Long Live Toussaint L’ouverture
C'est de la haute voltige musicale, des athlètes de haut niveau
First Band Very Powerfull! Good!

For raw power and energy, yes. For musicality and creative exploration, I have to go with Caravanserai and peaking out with Welcome.

Wow didn’t think they played this live before Neal was on board, this came from the third Santana album, called the new Santana album, this is the original band playing here
All together, they are working some 'black majik' with those instruments!🥳
Y llegó al 2020 la máquina del tiempo 😀

Chepito was my teacher, here in LA
In the words of Miles Davis what a motherfuker CHEPITO is here soloing .... I've always been a firm believer that it doesn't matter how technically brilliant you are or how will you can compose music play within or between the notes and you are an absolute genius makes no difference when your sewing it is got to do with your heart and how you feel in your soul and express it with animalistic Style to me he expresses that style in this solo that's not taking away he's Integrity as a musician but I think it takes a great musician to be able to put money and bit his soul will take him to his destination and rely on it and trust it enough to do so he is with the spirit there brother is with the spirit there there ain't no doubt about that from the very first hit you can tell he means business beautiful absolutely beautiful add powerful
Brilliant title,,,

Chepito,a one man show
@Peter Miller José Octavio "Chepito" Areas Dávila was not able to deal with fame and money accordingly ... Today he's paying the price. Even though he was a great musician.
Peter, yes I heard about it while in Nicaragua last year.
