  • Santana - Soul Sacrifice
Recorded Live: 8/18/1970 - Tanglewood - Lenox, MA

Subscribe to Music Vault on UA-cam: goo.gl/DUzpUF
    Personnel:
    Carlos Santana - guitar, vocals
Gregg Rolie - keyboards, piano, lead vocals
    David Brown - bass
    Michael Shrieve - drums
Jose "Chepito" Areas - percussion, conga, timbales
Mike Carabello - percussion, conga, vocals
    Summary:
Recorded just over a year after Santana played its historic Woodstock Music & Art Fair performance, the band was fast becoming one of the biggest in the world. They were about to release their second album, Abraxas, and were riding high on the heels of three hit songs from their debut album and a new Top 10 hit, a cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Black Magic Woman."
A year earlier - in fact only a few days before the Woodstock Festival - Bill Graham staged the first of several concerts billed as "The Fillmore at Tanglewood." Tanglewood is the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the storied venue had just begun to experiment with staging contemporary concerts on their grounds. Staging a rock concert in a classical venue had yet to be done, so of course the concept of doing so excited Graham. He brought the full-scale Fillmore East production team in, including the Joshua Light Show, and booked a great lineup. This first concert featured B.B King, Jefferson Airplane and The Who, and drew the largest crowd that Tanglewood had ever seen by far.
Buoyed by the event's success, Tanglewood and Graham agreed to stage three similar dates in 1970. The last of these is this show, when Santana headlined after The Voices of East Harlem and the legendary Miles Davis had played (you can hear Mile's set here).
This historic and beautifully recorded performance features a smoking performance by Santana in the last year of their classic lineup, before a young Neal Schon joined the band. We think you'll agree it's an incredible performance by a great band in their prime.

When I am confined to my rocking chair, old and feeble, and compelled to watch my days dwindle down to a precious few, if nothing else, I will be able to say with pride that we rocked out loud in the Sixties and Seventies.
Nothing since has equaled what we had.
No Autotune, no pitch correction... They did not need it.
Just boatloads of raw, pure, unadulterated talent.
I wish I had a time machine so I could take you young folks back to witness those days live, real, in person. Then you would know what a real band sounds like.
Thank goodness these videos remain to give you some sense---a taste, a feeling---of what it was like.

And just think…today there’s a boatload of auto tuned hip hopsters to entertain the masses. There’s no musical component to it, just look at me ain’t I somethin’ celebrities. Somebody turn the clock back 53 years.

I used to jam with members and family of the band - actually it’s not unusual to get cuts and even have your fingers split along the fingerprint .
Trap drummers can glance the cymbals - I have one cymbal that’s splattered with my blood and it’s still there after decades .
We used to play for 8 hours - and if you’re in a band , you should be able to play at least 4 hours straight - don’t want to crap out after a measly couple of hours

Michael Shrieve remains, to this day, the best drummer I've ever enjoyed listening to. A rhythm god. There may be more technically skilled drummers, but they tend to lose the groove (a.k.a. the whole point) of a tune. Shrieve NEVER lost it. EVER. Stunningly in the pocket all the time. And that's just one guy- this was a whole band so in the pocket and so full of talent- Santana, Rolie making magic on the keys, Brown holding it down, and- of course- Chepito and Carabello never get enough credit for being an integral part of the rhythm band. Damn this is a great listen. :)

Tight playing, crazy intensity and a real crowd igniter, you cannot fail to find the groove and start dancing. The drum solo never fails to excite, the instrumental breaks are nearly a side show. The drummer is something else making more sound out of a relatively small kit than others do with much bigger and more complex sets. However the tune just becomes a musical incendiary when Carlos and Gregg start interplaying in the second half. Why can't modern day players match the skills these guys show?
