  • Transmission oil change on 1968 Volkswagen Beetle - VW - VW bug - amateur mechanic video. This is a highly restored vehicle that sees 400+ miles per year. I purchased it a few years back and should have flushed fluids right away - ended up waiting - should have dont it sooner.

Great tutorial! I choose to remove the heater hose and that opened up “some much room for activities”. My 18” long neck funnel reached the fill hole from the wheel well. It kept a good angle for the oil to flow straight from the bottle. Side note, proper amount of oil is paramount seeing it is two fold. One, it obviously lubricates the gears but secondly, this oil travels down both axle tubs and lubricates the rear wheel bearings.

why do we unscrew the fill plug first ? what happens if we don't ?

Advice I received was it is possible to drain all the oil out and then not be able to get oil in if you cannot get that plug out .

sounds like you found it - but it is a 17mm hex head that is on the driver side of the transmission towards the front. should fill just to the lower edge of this fill spot. i used the tube and pump shown in the video to get the oil in there. the drain is on the bottom - make sure to loosen both first before dumping all the trans fluid out so you are sure you can re fill when you are ready
