  • Here's the last of the hummingbird action footage, selected from over 500 clips shot in May, 2018. The little birdies spend a lot of their time defending their food sources as you can see here, and the king (or queen) of the feeder can change from day to day as hummingbird populations and nesting efforts shift around. Males and females can be equally aggressive, and even the larger species (such as Anna's Hummingbird) aren't immune from attack by smaller birds such as Allen's Hummingbird males and females.
As spring progresses, more natural nectar sources become available for a short time and the feeder sees a lot less traffic, but that doesn't stop the birds from maintaining their territory and chasing off any other birds that try to feed there.
These tiny birds weight less than 1/4 ounce (2.5 - 4.5 grams is typical) but are very aggressive and surprisingly tough. Even though these fights appear pretty rough, the birds seldom hurt each other physically.
Filmed with a Sony FS700RH at 240fps and GoPro Hero 5 Black at 120fps, the resulting action is slowed down by 10x when played back at 24fps.
The soundtrack is "Dark Harbor" from the "Mission Control" CD by Technician (yours truly), MP3 album and single track available on iTunes at: itunes.apple.com/us/album/mis... and CDBaby: store.cdbaby.com/cd/technician18 Full artist discography and CDs available at HTTP://technician.jcmdi.com

So funny, and amazing footage. Competition is strong in the wild. Here, different birds of prey fight over small nesting and hunting territory where I live.

I have three, 8-port feeders around my yard. And I see the same thing, always fighting each other away. I don't understand why they won't share a feeder with 8 openings. Strangely, I have seen on UA-cam some videos of multiple birds feeding at one time in harmony. Why don't my birds do that? lol...

Every bird seems to want to control all the food sources in a given area, no matter how plentiful the food is. Nature's programming, I guess. The only time they "appear" to get along at a nectar source is when there are so many birds that one bird couldn't possibly dominate it. When this happens, they do squabble a bit but have no other choice than to tolerate each other more or less until the crowd dies back down to a manageable level. I've also seen that when the currently dominant bird is away, all the others which would normally be chased off by that bird can sneak in and if several of them manage to get there together, they get along pretty well. If the dominant bird doesn't come back, it only takes a day or so for one of the others to take his/her place and the fighting starts up all over. Interestingly, the fighting doesn't seem to be as intense where food sources aren't involved. ...and those hummingbird pool parties are just completely out of character!

lack of food in the nature makes the birds and all animals aggressive.

Indeed it does. It must also be ingrained in their instinctual behavior, since they do this even when food is plentiful for long periods. They probably know that the bonanza won't last forever and take over as much food-bearing territory as they can. Thanks for checking it out! =)
