Maybe they used to but society has gone super snowflake and crazy Karen. Now taking kids out in the woods scares people (oh my god! They could get hurt or lost!) let alone actually “doing” something out there. They want to bubble wrap the planet, to them- everything is to risky. 🤨

My dad was SOF and it wasn’t that great. It was like boot camp from 5yrs old to 16 yrs old (that’s when I moved out) it set me up later in life but growing up like that let’s say wasn’t great . But experiences will vary

Btw, we just experienced evac with Southern Oregon on fire. Fires got within 1/2 of a mile from the farm. However, me, my wife and daughter packed up all essentials and desires into 3 trucks in 2 hours and left before every one else on our road (15 families). Subsequently, we avoided the clogged roads after they shut down the interstate, forcing huge rigs onto small country roads, secured a hotel room before there were no rooms available for 200 miles and we held up for 3 days! We each had our bags in our vehicles, traveled well armed and were prepared to spend time in the bush if necessary. Brought home a lot of lessons learnt.

I hope everyone is well. Many people think bug out bags are for the end of the world but they are used for many things, even what you described. There is no need in adding to the stress. It is better to have it ready and never use it for sure.

This brought back high school memories. I grew up somewhat close to a nuclear power plant. Right after 9/11 my dad had me learning exactly what bins to throw in any vehicle at the house in case my parents weren’t home from work when the alarm went off. He also had me memorize different exit routes from our town depending on which way the wind was blowing. This level of planning is something I took with me into adulthood. When there was a wildfire threatening my apartment, it was comforting knowing I already had a bag packed so all I had to worry about was getting my dog and getting out.
Thanks for taking time to go over other things to consider, and for taking time to teach your kids how to prepare as well.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge, experience, and wisdom with us. May I ask, what things would you consider if you had a family member, maybe an elder or handicapped individual, perhaps a wheelchair bound person for example, when considering bug out plan? It may be kind of niche, but ther are a lot of people who are in a care role and need to be capable, prepared and proactive. Thank you again .

Love it, super simple and not wanna be urban rambo overdone. Watching you ring out your shirt i would suggest packing/wearing dri-fit microfiber type shirts. They run so much cooler ane dry so darn fast. Also for the device charging cable i believe you had one but make sure it is a quality cable. The cheapo ones fray at the neck after too many bends/flexation. Anker makes a really good cable ive been using for my phones/flaahlights for years and it has never frayed. Lastly if you have the room. That solar charger is great but id also add to it a standard battery back. That way on a good sunny day you can use that solar charger to juice your battery pack and youll have juice for days if you run into some crummy weather.

This is actually really good technique y'all got to get the bags and gaurd each other while grabbing y'all's bags and getting ready to leave boy scouts when I lived in cannada and became a eagle scout in Canada as well taught me how to survive and live in any environment that it be extremely cold negative -50 Celsius and colder weather or 100F plus heat and survive and what to look for food wise and how to build the appropriate shelter for the weather and climate conditions using only what you have around you in the woods or environment. my dad taught me the big out skills and security and use of weapons for a shtf situation to be able to defend ourself and the weaker elderly or injured with our rifles and knives if it comes down to it. Great job dad teaching yourods these skill as well. I have a bolt bag all the time on me on my vehicle it has a three days worth of calories and protein in bar form that is vaccume sealed and will never expire and my bolt bag goes into my office with me as well at work I have everything in it except my ar15 mags and a handgun. But I have everything else including my prescription meds that I have to take every day to be able to live and stay healthy. My by bag is amazing I have everything I need for everyday life and I use some stuff out of it everyday. My lock picking tool will pick any lock and anyone can use it even if you never done it before it's that simple and has the 5 steps to use it engraved on the back of it as well. I carry three MREs and a few tealight candles and a thermal blanket and a jacket during winter and thank God I had it I was driving up north for a meeting and got stuck in that extreme winter storm that we had and was stuck on the highway in middle of nowhere for three days straight till help came and if it wasn't for my bolt bag I would have probably died from hypothermia cuse I couldn't run my SUV for very long for heat to conserve heat I would run it just long enough to keep the temperature above 60f and a thermal blanket and I had four teaight candles light on dash board for just enough heat to keep it just above freezing when not running the engine. God I was lucky and had enough stuff to help 3 more people that was near me that had nothing and they stayed with me in my SUV and of course I made sure they wasn't armed and that I was the only one armed always stay in control with strangers never let them have weapons if you are giving them resources in a situation like I went through that was the only time I needed everything in my bolt bag out of the 15 years of carrying it
