I put together a very cheap back pack with some items I got at goodwill. Kids book bag...Old Military flat cook set. Stainless steel water bottles..metal cup..ect. This last summer the tornado sires went off and yes...I took my pack out of my closet and it went with me to the basement. Something is better than nothing!
Absolutely right, you don't need the latest and greatest gear in order to be prepared. Focus on covering the survival basics. Food, water, fire, shelter. Well done.

That flashlight, if you have the right straps for it, you can make it into a headlamp pretty easily.
Liking the acronym! Great point about the light, clips onto my bandana for hands free operation

It really is the simplest bag, other than EDC stuff.
Water, snacks, buff or scarf (for you guys, it’s probably be a bandana or a shemagh, although I have a couple shemaghs myself!), super minimalist 1st aid, extra socks, a bic lighter, something to sit on (like a simple pad, or at least a ziplock baggie!), couple dust masks, flashlight and batteries, pocket knife, some minimal toiletries, and something (jacket, or umbrella) for shelter. Toiletries are super simple, comb, lip balm, bug spray, toothbrush, wet wipes and hand sanitizer.
That’s in addition to my purse which has I.D., keys, phone and charger and ear buds, a sudoku book, notebook and pen. I also keep a booklet that has family contact info, personal info, and a bunch of recipes that I can’t live without.

I gotta say, my favorite shelter system is my basha, with a military poncho and poncho liner. I’ve used them in all four seasons in the desert, the forest, and the mountains.

Good pack set up. We have some pretty similar stuff. Thanks for the video! I wanted to mention something. At my job we have a different faucet lock. The 4 way silcock doesnt work anymore. Instead you insert a small black key with a magnet in it. The shopping center close to me uses it as well. The mall about 30 miles away has a combination. Pick one up for a couple bucks at a hardware store. I wish i could remember the name. I took a spare and keep it in my urban bag.
I've seen those locks as well. Periodically I'll check a random location IE at the gas station or fast food joint. Glad you liked the video, got a new bag built which is same weight but designed for winter and better quality IMO.

Just a tip. You can get a microfiber towel that folds down to the size of a coke can for about five bucks at walmart. Could save some space. I kept one in my pack in Iraq, and really liked it. Also, the little twig stoves like like little lixada ones are nice. Multi-fuel, so they can use esbit tabs, alcohol, or tiny twigs.
Big fan of microfiber towels, currently using them in my 72hr gear. Multifuel is the way to go!
I don't know how so many people don't put any communication equipment in their bug out bags... In the very least pick up a cheap ham radio to at least be able to monitor local municipalities and if needed talk to others
I agree 100%, I know it's something I need to do, just haven't allocated the $$$. For starters I want to add a Bearcat scanner. Easy to use, no license required and gets me real time intel on the situation around me.
+The Survival Outpost Cheap little baofeng gt3tp, with AA battery pack adapter, nice little ham, plus has regular fm broadcast receiving, got mine programmed with marine frequencies for weather reports, receives the weather reports from Dublin (Ireland) and that's well over 50 miles away.
Question about the dpm gear, if it's urban won't that attract unwanted attention? Better off with grey/charcoal colours or if you want to mix it up a bit then even muted blues or brown mixed in. If you want camo gear then maybe a poncho you can throw over everything if you're going extra-urban? Also, you're water bottle is designed to nest into the crusader cup and hexi burner, maybe a good idea to add them?
Because the good communication you have to a license to operate it so can't even practice with it if you don't have a license so to me it's useless and CV is useless cause it's only short range you can make it a little longer but not much

@13:49.. Like the paracord/charger cable combo. Power pack looks heavy duty but for footprint size, I like the RAVPower 10050mAh Outdoor Portable Charger. I use those (they come with 2/micro usb cables) because they are about $24 vs 99. The paracord charge cable can be had for $20. Just a little less costly option (and smaller) for the budget minded bag builder. Cool gear loadout too. I just ordered two of the paracord spooltool's.

Good selection of gear,I maybe add that cold steel hatchery you got into the pack.and possibly a goretex Bibi bag.atb Russ.
That Cold Steel would be a good addition. I'm really torn on the sleeping arrangements, in a perfect world I'd have the extra $$$ to buy a high end inflatable mat that compressed down small and combine with a Bivi bag like you suggest. For now I roll with what I have on hand, but there is always room for improvements IE Version 2 :D

Very similar to the Alice pack I use. Large one for hiking and camping as well as bug out and the medium Alice for edc.

you have some interesting stuff there but your 800 calories for 3 days will last you for a day or day and half in good scenario. I recommend at least 2000/.a day
I understand where you're coming from, but 2,000 calories a day is quite a bit of food. I only eat 1200 daily right now and I consider myself very active with weight training and boxing 5-6 times a week. It really depends on your weight and the size of your bag. Consider that show "Naked Survival". Those people eat next to nothing and live for 3 weeks. If I have extra space I'll probably devote to extra ammo or water depending on the situation. I'm perfectly fine with 800, but I do think it's a good idea to bump up to 1200. Thanks for the support!
I agree with saving the extra space for extra ammo, and water. ammo = food, I'd rather carry 10 bullets than 10 meals. and always water before food!!
They have this saying in gun fighting that you have the rest of your life to put rounds on target. Your food will last you as long as it lasts you. Food procurement should be prioritized over food.

Love your layer system and your honesty about not needing a huge knife! I must admit I do love the idea of a fixed blade in the TEOTWAWKI fantasy as it'd be the last knife you ever got but in practice you've most likely got the right idea.

Well to be honest I have a large fixed blade in my INCH bag, but for the 72hr pack, didn't think it was necessary. Love my Basha, been using it for years now, never failed me :D Thanks for the support!
Similar water setup to mine, I swapped out that sawyer folding bottle for a 1 liter platypus, much easier to fill. Also keep some flavoured electrolyte powder to add to puri-tab water to make it more palatable.
Good call on the platypus, the folding bag that Sawyer provides isn't the greatest quality

Great video and good gear list. Thx for sharing. adding a Bandana or shemag would be a great idea. they come in so handy. either as a facewrap to prevent dust and dirt gettin in your mouth or so much other things you can think of. cheers mate,

really like the sound grenade idea for the perimeter security, I use small bells with fishing line out in the bush but needed this tip for urban environment and it would be a good way to spook off the transients or other intruders if you had to pitch camp in the inner city of a large metropolitan area that could take days to travel by foot
Bells on fishing line works great as well, I like it! There are tons of wooded areas in Nashville metro and LOTS of transients. Of course as you move further away from downtown those numbers shrink.
Here's what foods I'd recommend storing inside of your Buttpack as well as the pockets 4 it if y'all got a 3 day pack & which of different variety outdoor/survival brands of food from the list below is up 2 ya: 3 Days worth of Breakfast, 3 Days worth of Desserts, 3 Days worth of Lunch/Dinner, 3 Days worth of Snacks/Dips/Smoothies
Quart bag of pre-cooked and dehydrated lentil/rice/barley soup mix, maybe some oatmeal and a couple bags of instant potatoes, will feed one person on the hoof, for a week or more. Trying to do meals, only takes up space/weight you dont have and complicates the routine. Instant potatoes and instant oatmeal can be made cold, on the march, which is how theyll be taken 90% of the time, in any scenario that compels you to move. 'Snacks' waste space/weight, are empty calories and are very difficult to manage under stress(youll eat all your candy, in a day).
Any scenario that compels you to set out on foot, on short notice, is going to keep you moving for 24hr or more and will be extremely stressful. You may think you're prepared, but *you are not* . Any 'snacks' you have, will be devoured in the first 48hrs, for easy calories and comfort. Those sugar calories are just as bad for you, as amphetamines. The moment you stop moving, youll crash and your ability to get moving again, will be severely diminished, because your muscles are starved and overworked - hikers experience this a lot and is a common cause of failed thru-hikes(also rapid muscle loss and kidney dysfunction aka 'wasting') You're not out for an afternoon stroll, you need to eat with consideration and purpose, not convenience, or comfort. Nutrition and food management is going to be one of the top challenges.
Thinking you are stopping and COOKING IS asking to DIE.
Bring food you are adding cold water to or eating straight from the can. Like ravioli. Peanut butter. Instant mashed potatoes. Canned fruit. Canned ready to eat protein like beans or tuna. Roast beef.. only take what you will eat . NO POP TEA OR COFFEE! CAFFEINE WILL SLOW YOU DOWN HURT YOU IN HEALTH. and don't smoke if you physically have to move to get there.
Your not going to the woods to eat. 3 minutes without air 3 days without water 3 WEEKS WITHOUT FOOD. and your dead
WATER COMES LONG BEFORE FOOD. Pack water. A gallon a day plus what is needed to make food is appropriate. then TAKE A WALK ACCROST TOWN AND SEE HOW FAR YOU GET.
even though you are in a urban area you may want to have a small fishing kit and some home made picture frame wire snare anytime you can get fresh meat is good neither takes up much space you can always set both up while you are searching for other items and come back to them or at night while you are bedded down just a thought

Love your kit- all bases covered, well thought out, not too much to weigh you down. So many people ignore binoculars, and I think they are a great addition!!!! My only negative comment.... Ditch the tampon all together. Go grab a dollar store package of rolled gauze or 4x4s. Unless you are a lady, a tampon is not the right tool for the job.

Looks to me like you got the right idea and you're doing great I found an 80L padded backpack with an internal frame that light has ammo pouches on it has Molly attachments and holds all of my gear that I would need for survival and that includes security with a weapon too bad I can't post pictures this thing is really neat I found it on eBay for $37

Make sure you get a UNIVERSAL silcock key, so you can get the hose bib door open too. the UNIVERSAL key has 4 silcock keys in one, one of which will allow you to open the ports that are covered by a door...

Oh, two things I'd add is, I carry my phone in an XL Nite Ize sideways holster and there's a thin pocket next to the phone on the inside and I carry a thin micro boo-boo kit and a small saw blade and file from leatherman and scissors from a Swiss card in a thin vinyl slip sheath. I also keep a large bandanna folded neatly in my back pocket of my pants. It has a good pattern on it to blend in with various environments. I can use it as a head cover or towel or to hide items in the bush if needed plus a myriad other other uses that are well known for like a pre filter for purifying water or wound cover etc.

in you video you talked about urban survival, that being said what do you carry in your vehicle also I would look at a scanner, need to know where the police and where the major areas of unrest are located. for urban I would lean more toward no shelter and more to food, water, and defense. just a few thoughts loved the bag ideas def going to use some of them.

Like your kit. Only thing i would recommend is getting a 5L waterproof bag, and put it around some gear. I saw your compression sac is already waterproof so you don't really need it for that. But the main reason to recommend it is to be able to get 5L of water from any source to your camp ... 5L will get you 2 days or so of water, meaning once you set up you only need to get to the source once... You can turn the side over on themselves and create a small sink to wash yourself, your gear or food... you can use it to collect tinder (or transport it dry), or wild edibles, etc... if you would have to swim you can use it to keep your current clothing dry or as a floatation device ... and if you just keep it empty on top of you pack, you can even use it to just rob the pantry quickly before you leave your house...
I think this extra capability (to have an extra useful bag) is worth the little weight it would add, also because it means you can leave all your stuff where it is, and still have some extra space if you need it, for w/e reason.

Ya like the idea of a matching Digital Flora Buttpack 2 your 3 day Bag/Pack & as well as what 2 store inside that very Buttpack & the pockets 4 it?
my suggestions would be toss that plastic canteen and get a ss nesting cup and a 40oz kleen canteen for boiling water and cooking your meals. that folder is great. until it breaks. and given enough abuse in the field it will. get a fixed blade please. i would add an inline carbon filter to your water kit. i love saywer and have a ton of them, but they do nothing for chemical issues. loved the vid bro, keep em coming :)

this week's bag is my maxpedition versipak. in it are: 2 20 round steel magazines for my ar. tourniquet. boo boo kit. gloves. combat gauze. shemagh. clif bars ×4. 550 cord. watch cap. water. aqua mira straw. chem light. mini stove. lighter. duct tape. notepad, with pen and sharpie. leatherman. sharpener. head lamp. electrical tape. tea. aleve. and emergency blanket. going to add small binoculars for scouting. this can definitely sustain me for at least 1 day probably 2 and maybe 3 if I ration my equipment.
Gotta love the Clif bars. 240 kcals in each one. Looks like a great bag, a pair of folders comes in handy, been thinking about getting a Barsa Monocular for first line carry. Got any rain gear or poncho in the kit?
My GHBag is a little bit smaller, about 12 lbs. A mylar tube tent saves a lot of space and 72hr. lifeboat rations provide more calories and negates the need for cooking so that is what I carry in my pack..
How are you set on water and a sleep system? Gotta keep the season in mind when packing your kit. For winter you're going to add weight w/ sleeping bag, gloves, thermals, jacket etc.

The winter clothing I have in a separate bag which I carry in the van or car to change into before letting out on foot. Spot on, I do exactly the same with mine. Got a 3V Gear duffle in the trunk with jacket, beanie etc. Also have some food and other stuff. Typically my EDC pack doubles as the Get home bag provided I have that extra gear in the trunk. Don't forget to share that link when you do the video.

That's my area of TN as well, moved to Knoxville, lived there for a few years, then Nashville, then back to north Florida.

Just a thought for you.You showed us that you keep your tarp in a wet bag with your sleeping gear but what happens if your tarp is wet and you have to pack it?
I have the same DPM Basha and I fold mine and slide it into the zipped compartment behind the back of the pack frame, so it doesn't matter if its wet when I pack it, although I give it a good shake before I do so?
By the look of the pack you have,I would guess it has an internal compartment for the padding, inside the main compartment of the pack itself?
Either way, give it some thought and let us know what you think?
That's a great question, if I thought a wet tarp would soak through the storage bag, I would just hang off a molle loop on the pack to keep it away from the other gear. But I've never had that issue before. The tarp is waterproof so all you need to do is simply shake it off and pack it into the dry bag and be done with it

I do it primarily to test out new configurations and also to use my gear instead of letting it sit and collect dust. However I always maintain a dedicated evac bag. Prep kits are an evolution so its ok to modify them and figure out what works best for you

just a tip, 800 calories per day is basically nothing. Swap out some carbs (4 calories per gram) for some fats (9 calories per gram). This will net you more calories and a better energy source for a long walk home etc. Good luck! :)

I use to pack a ton of gear, something for every situation. Then I got smart and cut 50% of the contents out and added 500 more rounds of 9mm. SHTF I will be switching to BAMN “by any means necessary” method!...

Good video.... What is the average weight of folks bug out bags? I can't seem to slim-line mine and it's about 30 - 40 lbs.
I've seen bags range from the low end of 20lbs up to 50lbs. The main factor that can drive up weight is redundancy. Take a close look at how many knives, flashlights, batteries, etc you are carrying and determine if you need that level of backups for 72hr time span. People have survived off much less than what we pack these days.
800 calories a day are even less calories then life boat rations can give a day. I would suggest more in the food department it seems to be criminally over looked with most BOBs in my opinion. Always fun to see everyone else's ideas keep up the good work man!

Get (ultra) light weight bug. And yes, you are correct about all those East Coast people impacted by hurricane and seasonal torrential rain storm flooding. But the same applies to the Gulf victims, and those still impacted by New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and all of Texas taking the refugees (and all their problems and issues) there.
Prepping is 80% mind think, 15% acquisition, 4% situation and location awareness with critical analysis, ... and 1% no-sweat sur-thrive the emergency/disaster/natural event.
Yep disasters have been pretty widespread this year, quite sad when I think about it. But I always feel a bit better knowing I'm prepared better than the average person. That 1% is a big factor, thanks for watching!

If you think about it the chest rig/hip bags along with a smaller backpack is a better idea than just one backpack. If you get separated from your bag or have to ditch it you only lose a small portion of your loadout

I'm still working out the best method of conceal carry that works for me and my 72hr gear.
My personal preference and recommendation... In a 72/HR kit only carry non cook able food. Like you mentioned you don't have room for a mess kit most times only having room for a small esbit type stove and few fuel tabs. Better to save that for purification of water as a last ditch need plus in a 72hr deal you want to keep on the move and not having to stop and fire up a stove to eat. A BOB or 72hr kit is to hold you over from point A to B the faster and more efficient you can get to point B the better your chances of survival. High energy high calorie foods are better. The cliff bar is great choice. I'd swap out the jerkey and other things for peanuts, sunflowers seeds, snicker bars etc. proteins don't yield many calories and take a lot of calories for the body to convert Into fuel. Carbs and especially sugars are immediate fuel. This is how most backpackers go. It saves a lot of weight and allows you to carry 3-4x as many calories in the same amount of space.
One more thing to add.. For camping backpacking etc.. We generally go for 100+ calories per oz with size of packaging being a concern as well. This guideline will yield you many small dense items like cliff bars that contain on average 300-350 calories each. Each serving you consume you want in the 300-350 range. This is a great rule to follow not only for packable foods but also for a cache or long term storage and prepping stock.
Great point about only carrying non cook able food...now that I consider it, the smell of cooking might be a bad thing, attracting attention to your position. That's a good rule to follow for kcals/serving. Thanks for watching!
Good work on the video and bag though was nice, simple, and gets the job done wo lumping a full mil ruck. Watch some videos on "lightweight" backpacking. There is a lot to be learned from the people that do that type of stuff. I personally don't know how they do some of the extended trips they do like that but they make it weeks or even up to a month on those setups so I think there is a lot to learn that can be transferred over to the prepping and survival communities. Consider they are packing 25-30lb bags and trekking 15-20miles a day off what most would consider way under prepared gears and doing it every weekend for fun.
One more item of note.. When going with chocolate type foods make sure they are dark chocolate not milk.. It will prevent having a melted gooey mess as dark chocolate has a much higher melting point then milk chocolate does.. Stay away from those energy gels though. For people not accustomed to using those you will end up immobilized with the worst diarrhea you've ever had. I see a lot put these in their packs and it's a horrible idea if they don't use them regularly. They are great fast calories although a bit expensive.. It takes a couple weeks using regularly like a sup lament to get your body adjusted to them. So anyone who uses these.. Make sure you actually incorporate them into your daily life or you're going to have issues should you ever need them.
I'm sorry I ended up watching the video all over and something else no one considers just came to me.. Add chalk. It works well for marking things if you think your walking in circles or great tool to leave a message for others Incase your get separated. Granted they will wash off and not last long but it's prob the best and most overlooked marking tool available.
Great bag! Mine is set up pretty much the same. Question about the pants; are they over-gusseted? I bought some LA Police Gear and the crotch hangs practically to my knees. Can't stand that. I have been looking at Tru Spec but am leery about spending the money. Any advice would be appreciated!
Glad you liked it! About the pants, the crotch is normal enough, doesn't hang low, it's reinforced but that's about it. Both Truspec and 5.11 pants fit me like a regular pair of jeans. Check em out, if you don't like the fit, you can always do a return.

As for Folders,... My dad carries a Cold Steel Bushman, the stuff he has done with it is beyond even what Cold steel does,... folders work if you know how to use them!
Yep couldn't agree more. Get a quality folder with a liner lock and don't look back. Coldsteel makes great knives. I have a couple, but no folders from Cold Steel

Great stuff what I really liked was you didn't go over the 4 guns you might have hidden on your person...lol also the fact that your pack didn't revolve around your gun/guns when a scenario happens of course that's going to be on your person but no need to go over that a bunch of times.
Firearms are an important part, but not the main focus for most situations. But you gotta stay flexible, keep the gear speced for the mission at hand.

I agree, but to be honest it does depend on the area you live in. It's very common here in the south to see people with a variety of camo jackets, military surplus backpacks etc. If this was indeed some kind of serious hostile threat environment and I was on foot, you can bet your ass I'd be moving at night and staying concealed during the day. I've learned that a turnkit should never be used in a situation where a hospital near by because releasing a turnout after a few minutes will kill you. you should have more ways to stop the bleeding and use that as a last resort

The to part of the firesteel, one on left side, one on wrigt side - and Compass in the middle. Easy to find.
