Crazy thing is Bonzo would play this as part of a 3 hour plus set (often nearer 4) along with a 20 minute plus drum solo. Incredible talent and stamina.
Still watching this in 2024. A fantastic lesson for all those UA-cam drummers…three critical views, no fan blowing the hair, and no tiddies hanging out. Just amazing drumming.
I always see people arguing on cover videos about how someone didn't play it the right way or they aren't very good, and I always think about how when I play it I'm hanging on to the edge the whole time haha
I am a guitarist & this song , along with Kashmir, are my favorite songs ever. These are also 2 of bonham's best bodies of work . This guy knocked it out of the park ! To see someone's right foot go that hard & fast in a 9 minute song is incredible. It doesn't have to be note for perfect ... This was impressive.
You're just being honest. It's not as hard as it looks but you have to have the cymbals set up just like he does so you can go R L R and then L R L the other way and then do it fast 4 times so back and forth twice.
The fill at 2:25 is the best fill ever played on drums in history of music. I always shit my pants when I hear it, and to see it played perfectly, unbelievable, man! Also, I always admire how that fill fits perfectly into lyrics, it comes right after "Into the sun, the south, the north, at last the birds have flown" - and Bonzo's hands just spread their wings over the drum set... And of course, let's not forget that epileptic right leg. Dear GOD
***** I've been playing drums for 5+ years and I'm pretty sure I know A LOT about drumming and drums. We all like different things, I, personally, love the combination of snare+bass drum in a fill. It's not about technicality or skill, it's just how it fits the music, that's why I pointed out the fill at 2:25 because I think it's perfect for that place in a song. If you're into technical drumming you probably think some fills by Buddy Rich or Dave Weckl are the best. Or if you are a metalhead you probably wank off to Dave Lombardo, Benante and similar drum machines? It doesn't matter, really. For me, it's Bonham, Chad Smith, Nicko McBrain and Danny Carey. The more I listen to music and play drums, the more I'm loving these guys.
TheTrooper9169666 I think its just an issue of calling it the "best fill in history". I would say the best fill in history exemplifies both technical and artistic expertise, and Bonham was never the BEST at either one. He's still a god in my mind, just a demigod.
TheTrooper9169666 Trooper - you're bang on - nice assessment. I'm a drummer of over 30 years experience. That is one of the most amazing rock fills that I've seen or heard up the point of March 1976 for sure & not many after that can match !
I am sitting here at my computer watching Led Zeppelin videos / cover videos when I should be sleeping. Just hard not to watch when you come across some great work like this! That was amazing! It gives insight into how very talented that band was (is) and how they inspire us.
Perfect.! Epic !amazing! This is the best drum cover ever in the history of you tube. Never will be beaten. You hit every ghost note, every pause, every fill perfectly. Your timming was of a meteronome! All hail the best drummer on the net. Love perfection!!!!
If this was double foot peddle drum cover on Achilles Last stand! I'd change the channel. But this guy stays true to the roots of drumming and most of all the one and only John Bonham.. Amazing Cover
You should be knighted by the rock gods for this demonstration of accuracy and superb attention to detail. It was astonishing to watch you play this song with the exact grove/feel, texture, time inflections on the fills, etc I've only seen a few drummers capture the essence of Bonham but nothing on the level that you've demonstrated. Thanks for sharing your hard work with us. Every music college should be knocking at your door asking you to be a professor to teach your knowledge Bonham.
Holy cow. I'm a guitarist but this is one of those songs I would air drum to when I was a teenager. This cover was amazing to watch. Thank you for making this video.
Simply awesome - I must've watched this about six times since discovering it the other day. Couple of things it highlights to me: How busy the bass drum is on this; how high Bonzo tuned his toms; and the fact that he never stopped that snare shufflin'!
The more I watch drummer videos. Including professional drummers. The more respect I have for John Bonham. No wonder I grew up listening to Led Zeppelin. Don't forget Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, and John Paul Jones. Most awesome band ever.
Yes, tighten the spring and if you have the adjustment for it, bring the beater back closer to your leg for a longer stroke. Use the fulcrum of the pedal by placing your toes around half-way down the pedal board. Sit a little higher also...high enough that your leg goes past 90 degrees. Your thigh should angle downwards. Try that let me know.
You honestly sound more like him than any drummer that's ever played him, including his own son Jason. You are a PHENOMENAL drummer. You have an incredible feel for rhythm and the groove. Page should have hired you for the reunion concert.
I think this is my new favorite way to listen to this song. What a great song. What a great drum performance by bonzo and also yourself. You ripped it man.
Same here. There's something different about that fill. I think as epic as this song is and awesome as Bonham's playing in on it is, a missed point is the amount of restraint he shows. There's a lot of "space" left in it by Bonham and that adds to the whole drama of the song's arrangement. But 2:27 and 5:22, he can't help himself and has to blow off some steam. Great drumming is as much about knowing what to play, when to play it, and when NOT to play it. Lots of guys miss that.
If anyone can cover this song any better I would like to see it.. Fucking awesome brother. Simply blown away because that is a very hard song to cover. Fantastic job and you should be very proud of it. Rock and fucking roll.

I love how you play the rolls "'correctly" in between the chord changes, I've seen many versions of this song played by many people and that aspect is often lacking. The importance of the rolls/fills in this song adds up to that fact that they really effect the feel of the song, in my humble opinion
Give that man a YooHoo! That was an epic cover. WOW your good. Thanks for the entertainment. I think I'll watch it again. Are those 14 or 15 sound edge?

He said almost none, which is true. It completely depends on the specific person but I'd guess you'd burn maybe 100 calories. That's approximately a banana or a tablespoon of olive oil.

GrooveDrummin No, I agree. Bonham was heavy handed anyway -naturally, but I agree about the "one-inch punch technique" as I do it myself. I was wrong to critique you. Maybe it's just the room sound or the mix on the recording then
that's right!!there's people who still think bonham was a hard hitter, when in fact you have to keep control to play the stuff.he barely raised his arms when playing, ecept if he wanted to.of course i got to leave my praises here for your playing!!spot on on Everything!!amazing work
The thing about Zeppelin songs and Bonham's drumming are the small nuances that make them kind of akward and hard to play correctly. When guys want to cover a Zep song I'm always reluctant bc it's really hard to do them justice imo. Then they always go for the “well let's just pick an easy one" and i always laugh bc I'm like which one of their tunes are “easy" to play? Even the most basic Bonham beat has some tricky nuances that can be really hard to reproduce without alot of time to break it down and practice it. He just had one of those special feels and outside of the box ways of playing shit that makes him one of the true masters of rock drumming.
From one drummer to another, this is pure genius, Bonzo is surely looking down smiling at you... There are no other cymbals for me than the 2002's, you can't get any more of a crisp, clean, powerful, yet warm sound with just enough sustain all in one. Great work my friend!
You are a real technician my man! Really drivin' "the band" through out, especially on the break with the precision 4 stroke roles. This is studio quality work!

Epic drumming. Very inspirational and an enormous help for aspiring drummers to be able to check out the different angles. Thank you very much and I hope to see more

Never took a lesson but I could listen to a song and get pretty close to my version of it. Boy I loved it at the time, but than life got in the way and I lost more and more time behind the drums always wondering what if I would've kept practicing. John Henry Bonham was always my favorite. I did get to see Buddy Rich one time in LA man he was so amazingly fast on the drums without breaking a sweat!
wholly smokes - you really nailed that tune - and your drums sound phenomenal! That bass drum is really dialed in. Cheers! Well Done! Best cover of any tune I've seen on youtube!
Groove on Brother, when music was music. And Drummers made the band. Keep the music going on for us 50+ dudes that grew up on this music. Awesome Drumming, sounds and looks almost like the man.
This is my favorite Zeppelin track period.. This was Bonham's best drumming in my opinion, Achilles last stand is the most solid non stop drumming you will ever hear. Great cover, it's a Beast of a track to play too. Cheers! you did this track justice, great job!
from one drummer to another, this is the best Bonham drum cover I've ever heard. It takes a lot more than tabs to capture his feel and you got it man. Kudos!
If your mean 8th notes on hi-hats, yes he is with slight hi-hat inflection throughout the whole song. What do you think they are 1/4 notes? Actually, I "cheated" by having the sheet music. Cymbal shots were on the mark, if you don't think so that's fine. Thanks for watching.
As just a Zep fan. No musical instrument experience this is amazing to watch how the drums parts flow.I use to play this song back in the day late nights, will always be a favourite. Great job from the Crazy Canucks.
nailed it. you got the bonzo phraseology down. transition from syncopated hits on snare to the bolero-like rat-a-tat on the snare isn't easy to feel. you're right about the stamina & just keeping all the changes straight in your head. a lot going on with this one.
Crazy thing is Bonzo would play this as part of a 3 hour plus set (often nearer 4) along with a 20 minute plus drum solo. Incredible talent and stamina.

Kudos!
Best song of all time which you covered brilliantly. Thanks very much.
My favourite drum cover of all time!!!!
I am gobsmacked! I totaly understand what it takes to pull this off. Well done! Bravo! Thank you!
How did anybody thumb down on this ??? it was flawless . Best I've ever heard 👍👍
Dude....wow...just, wow. Always among my favorite Zep songs.
As just a Zep fan. No musical instrument experience this is amazing to watch how the drums parts flow.I use to play this song back in the day late nights, will always be a favourite. Great job from the Crazy Canucks.
greetings from Canada
I could watch/listen to this guy all day long. Very good
nailed it. you got the bonzo phraseology down. transition from syncopated hits on snare to the bolero-like rat-a-tat on the snare isn't easy to feel. you're right about the stamina & just keeping all the changes straight in your head. a lot going on with this one.
Spot on! You totally nailed it. Justice for my favourite Zepp song.
What a workout....great cover to this timeless, awesome cut off of Presence - i bought the album in '76, and seen them live in Seattle of '77.
