That was a really good explanation for the types of compression. Now I'm kicking myself because a couple of the analog versions of those compressors are units that I have seen for little to nothing at garage sales and pawn shops and just said to myself " what the hell is that?" and didn't grab it for a few dollars. Thanks for the video.
I discovered the beautiful and sometimes necessary effects of compressor later in guitar playing life when learning 'The Eagles' songs. Nice video explanation.
Big thanks for the video! And big thanks for not destroying the video with lots of nonsense talk. Unbelievable that you only have 51 200 subscribers, should be way more. I would love to see a video on how you would approach a mix and process a, let’s say, a Toontrack Superior Drummer track. 🤟
Thanks so much for the kind words. We appreciate your feedback and thanks for watching! I love the suggestion, we’ll see if we can make a video about that!!
Good content. And thank you for non-insulting thumbnails. It is rare these days to find good content and normal thumbnails that are not insulting the inteligence. Subbed for sure
Best video I’ve seen here clear thoroughly informative yet simple and to the point. Please! More videos like this. Maybe an All Types series. I’d love to see feature preamps, filters, delays etc. Great video!!!
This was really helpful to understand and how and why to chain compressors. Also Joey’s voice over tone is awesome too! Would love a tutorial on that as well - 🤘😈🤘
This was great! I've watched a lot of content and I went through a couple of courses, but I never understood the different types of compressors until now. I'm a home musician, but this will be very useful for my mixing!
Man this was a really awesome video, thanks for putting all this information in one place - I know it took a lot of work to make and share. Think I'm finally reaching a place where my understanding of compressors is starting to gel and glue (lol) because everything you're saying makes sense to me, I definitely need to work more on training my ears and doing hands-on experimentation something I've started doing a bit more is throwing random loops into Ableton and then just messing around with different compressor plugins, settings, and combinations to let my ears appreciate how they change the sound of the final output. it's gradually making me more confident and fast on my decisions
Hi, I am using wirecast 15 to livestream to zoom and I would like to improve the audio for live events. I am struggling to find resources for EQ and compression for live events using a DAW to zoom. Do you have any recommendations for Fx/compressions/EQ resources I could use? Thanks
@@AdamShepard agreed, all depends on genre and what sounds you're going for. On vocals and bass, I prefer to use the faster acting comp first (FET) into a slower reacting comp (OPTO). One catches the peaks, the other helps "average" out the signal! I've also experimented with other combinations... like using VCA [with fast settings] going into a TUBE style comp... so many ways to mix and match and experiment!
Using plugins will make all compressors become FET as computer using billions of it inside, not talking about digitizing it. Use an actual and real compressors as possible if you want to experience the real ones.
This was the best video ive seen on describing the different types and the best applications for them. gold content. thanks very much.

This is the best compressor video ive ever seen. The FET into OPTO was an eye-opener
Really informative and hats off to the editor. The visuals really add in to the details.

7:47 That Drum sounds AWESOME !
Joey Sturgis is the Best .Going to buy it all already own several of his units. They Kickass
thanks for the explanation of HOW they work rather than just going through some common settings like most other tutorials.

Great vid, going to go try out a FET > OPTO on my vocals right now!

I Really Enjoyed Watching this! Awesome Content!
Nice video joey this really cleared things up for me a lot thanks!!
Saved for future reference. Great overview, thank you

thanks for explaining the uses of these!
great video joey!
Great vid JST 👌 perfect explanation
Extremely helpful video. Thanks!
Great lesson. Where can we listen to the last song ? Awesome riff !!
great explanation, thanks!
awesome video thanks dude!
Quality video, loved it 💯🖤
Very informative, alot of theory
@joeysturgistones @3:15 are you sure the 2 waveforms representing the output signals of the 2 types of compressors were not interchanged?
A+ explanations!
try a pcm compressor too! check out the fostex 3070, they are really easy on the low end, almost no distortion
Very useful! 🙌🏻🙌🏻♥️
Another great video. Minor detail: was the waveforms correct in the opto vs fet back and forth comparison?
I have the same question...
Man in that part I didn’t notice any change in the sound, with closed eyes both sound the same
Can I use all types of compressors in parallel without causing phase problems?

Gold Vid 🔥
can u give us the links for this compressors ? cant find this version of the u73b anywhere
Amazing 🔥
song? 9:06
Where could i find More lesson like this?
Right here on our channel
gracias por esta información te amo
Cool! What plugin do you use to see the changes of the waveform in real time? Thank tou!
Oszillo Mega Scope 🚀
BG-Special Edition??? What in the world is that???
what is the song at the end of the video?
If the VCA compressors are so versatile and can be used in any context, why do we still use all the other kind of compressors ?
Great! Cheers :)
Ok your videos are forcing me to subscribe……SUBSCRIBED……
Thanks for this video are you interested in buying real estate
Which Comp on mixbus, which on MP3 beat and which on master bus?
First Comp in mix chain should be fet or opto (vocals)
@@furtakdominik5508 in this video it's fet > opto, you can do it however you like

I'm crazy about these compressors ... cant still hear them tho
....just a quick note, "Mu" is pronounced "Mew", not "Moo".
Otherwise, excellent presentation.
