The 1176 is one of my favorite compressor/limiters!
It’s got a great signature sound that is very useful on a variety of sources, particularly vocals and drums.
In today’s video, I’ll give an overview of the 1176, how the controls work, and show you how I use it on some vocals and a drum bus.
What are your thoughts on the 1176?
Do you have a favorite revision? Let me know in the comment!
*** I forgot to mention that when pulling the RELEASE of an 1176, that will add an internal High Pass Filter SideChain to the Compressor's detector circuit. That's another little secret :-)

Hi! I just wanted to add you can also click on "Release" to lift the release knob which adds a low cut filter to the detector signal, so the compressor doesn't react so much to the low end in the signal. In the manual it is refered to as a sidechain filter:
Sidechain Filter
Note: The Sidechain Filter control does not exist on the original hardware or the 1176LN/SE Legacy plug-ins.
A fixed 10 dB per decade (3 dB per octave) custom linear filter is available for the compressor sidechain. This function minimizes low-frequency content from the compressor's control sidechain, reducing excessive gain reduction and/or "pumping" on bass-heavy audio signals without reducing bass content of the audio signal itself.
To toggle the function, click the "/" filter symbol and/or "RELEASE" text label beneath the Release knob, or shift-click anywhere on the Release knob. When the Sidechain Filter is active, the Release knob is "lifted" and slightly enlarged.
Note: The sidechain filter only acts on the compressor's sidechain signal. While this filter can produce an audible change in dynamics behavior, it does not act directly on the audio signal.
Thanks for the reminder, I completely forgot to mention it!
As a teenager in the 90s, I was in a hip-hop band. We mainly used Roland JV and XP gear. When I programmed the rhythm on the good old XP-80 synthesizer and tried to make it sound like the hit songs of that time, I really beat it up, hoping for a fuller sound. But no matter how hard I tried, it still sounded thin. A few years later, I learned that to achieve that sound, you need a 1176 compressor. Your videos are awesome! Love it!
Thanks for sharing your experience with the 1176! Glad you like my videos :-)
Thank you, Chris. That was a great and clarifying review of a classic. The examples were perfect.
Glad you enjoyed it, Jorge!
Awesome video as always, Chris! Thank you for sharing this great guide!
My pleasure! Thanks for watching!
What a helpful video!! Thank you for demystifying the tool!!
Of course! Glad it was helpful!
I didn't understand the input-output knobs before, but it's actually very easy to understand now! Thank you!
It's just to make the sound go through the threshold and then we re-adjust with the output knob! 🔥
Such a great video on compression, thank you.
Glad you liked it!
Now I know how to use this plugin. Thanks Chris!!!
That's great! You're welcome!
It never fails. I always learn something valuable from you Chris! Bon Jour.
Awesome! Thank you!
Best video on 1176. Thanks!
Wow, thanks!
For me, the main button is the output Level. I like to get this where I am running the 1176 at the optimal level. Everyone seems to overlook the importance of getting everything right at the output level. I'm constantly checking the output Level. 😀😀
Back to Basics. I love this kind of content
Thanks :-)
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
The Input stand of any Compressor is first of all thang. 0VU
Thank you So Much
Of course!
Chris I’m having a problem with my mixes. The group bus for my mix the lead and back up is it suppose to be mono or stereo. cuz I can’t add the plugins to each track it starts freezing and lagging 😢. I’d be happy if I can get help on this
Thanks for sharing! How is the plugin performance compared to its hardware unit?
GREAT video! Can you do one for the Tegeler Creme? The Tegeler Creme is in it's OWN class!
Best Tutorial about Compression. Follow. 🖤
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it!
I was searching for some ideas on how to tame hard consonants that sounds harsh and clipping after applying compression. I used an Waves emulation of 1176 even though that I have got the UAD version also. I am very happy with my vocal not disappearing like before when the beat comes in. Gives a consistent voice this one with the right settings. But the T and some S came up also. Will appreciate it if someone suggested a technique, a plugin or some tutorial link.
I use my BLA 17 outboard gear which is their version of an 1176 along with their Bluey compressor they give everything something special. As far as a plugin version I use TRS Black 76. I put it almost everything 😉
That's so cool!
BLA Seventeen isn't as good as the UAD plugins IMHO - it doesn't sound right - but the Bluey is awesome - what a tone machine! (with reversed (mis-wired) attack and release controls as per CLA's unique accident.)
@@LondonSteveLee every tool has it use....and for me the 17 does what I want but that doesn't mean it will be right for everyone.
HI. Another interesting video on compressors, I'm gonna finally understand them! lol! And, the big surprise, une voix francophone (I'm from Québec)! And I feel she's a Quebecer too, am I right?
Great video! Can you do one on the ART VLA II compressor? I have one and I'm still learning how to use it. I have it on my vocal line but I'm going to try it with other things too.
The best trick with the Pro VLA II (as a tracking compressor) is to unlink and then daisy-chain the two channels - that way you can set the first channel fast to grab the peaks and then the second channel slow to act as a poor man's LA-2A. A two stage fast/slow compressor setup in a single box.
I just started using it more on the Bass mannnnn it makes it more beefy!!!!!!! I gotta try it on drums I love the SSL Comp on drums but I will give this 1176 a try!!!
You will love it on Drums
The 1176 is sometimes as an amp and sometimes as a recovery. happy new year.
Is there any way to link the input and output knobs on the UAD?
Ok so great video as always! SUPER nerdy question. I know the 1176 attack is less than 1ms, evan at its slowest, but its doesnt sound like it.Sounds more like 10-20ms at its slowest. As it is a feed back compressor there seems that there is 'something' delaying the signal in the detector circuit. What do you think, is there a way to measure it?
I have the Warm Audio wa76 that I use for my vocals along with other compressors
That's pretty cool!
Great video! How do you move both the input and output knob at the same time?? Are you using a daw controller of some kind or is it possible without?
Best regards
Otto
Yes, exactly, I use a controller :-)
@@mixdownonline what kind of the controller is it? seems handy!
hi hat sounds good
Quote "I'm not even fully wet yet..!" I subscribed after that.. lmao!!!! hahahahahah
Oh man! 😅😅😅 Thanks for the sub!
Do you use an preamp before the hardware 1176? I am asking because i have an wa-76 and when i use it on my mixes, i always need to crank the input till the MAX to get even 3db gain reduction. Adding a preamp before it helps tremendously but it feels kinda wrong tbh
Are you feeding it from your daw? Can you increase the output so you are feeding it a hotter signal? 1176 gets a bit noisy if you crank the input or output.
100000% YES use a preamp before the hardware!! I use a Cranborne EC2 to go into one but you can use any cleaner preamp if you want lower noise
@@officialdiomer Thanks for the reply :)
Hi Chris, could yo recommend me a tube preamp similar to presonus bluetube dp where you have a saturation knob. My bluetube died
WA-MPX & WA-2MPX by Warm Audio...Making a video this month about this preamp :-)
@@mixdownonline great! Thanks!
19 years using an 1176 and now I hear 12&20:1 have a higher threshold 😢. Wild
Actually, the attack and release time act in a different way on the 1176 ...
All the way left (1) is the quickest attack and (7) the slowest.
Didn't you read the manual ? lol
This compressor is the only one built like that, Don't know why but now y'all know 🙌🏽
Besides, your video is on point 👌🏽
Sorry fella, but this is some fake news over here.
Quote from 1176 Manual listed on Universal Audio Website:
“The attack time is fastest when the Attack knob is in its fully clockwise position, and is slowest when it is in its fully counter-clockwise position. When a fast attack time is selected, gain reduction kicks in almost immediately and catches transient signals of very brief duration, reducing their level and thus "softening" the sound.”
Had this in my arsenal but I didn't know what it does
There you go! :-)
woah i was surprised by the French lyrics, then found out you’re near Montreal... 😅
Lol, yeah, man! I'm a French Canadian who used to live in Montreal, I'm in Calgary now :-)
11:24 - that's what she said
Why is it always drums used on these kind of tutorials, or guitars. How about sax or strings or solo brass, or just something different for a change. Love your channel Chris, so please don't get me wrong, but drums all the time? It's not just you but Spectralayers tutorial; yep, drums. 🙂 Love yer deep, lol
I'm a drummer, so I'm biased LOL! Seriously, drums are often used to talk about compression mainly because they are percussive, lots of defined transients so very easy to hear compression, and the tone shaping it does, when using drums.
Glad you love my channel, thanks :-)
@@mixdownonline Thanks man, although I'm not a drum lover, I still watch them all through. Even for an old sage like me, lol. ❤
You failed to mention that you can use combinations of the ratio buttons - not just single or "all in" (all-in was never officially supported in hardware BTW!) so if you depress the 12 and 4 buttons, you get 16:1 for example. This was the case with hardware 1176s as well. You also didn't mention that your Stam 1176 has a tube output stage so it's not a 1176 clone as such.
Actually, the combination of 4:1 and 20:1 will activate All Buttons, which btw, is in the 1176LN Hardware manual. For the other combinations, I actually don't know, to be honest. ,For this video, I kept it to the important things to understand enough about the 1176 to be able to work with. Now, the different features that the Stam 76D+ is not important for this video, I already made a dedicated video on the Stam 76D+, and this video is not about clone vs original, or plugin vs hardware, that will be for another time :-)
Chris Selim please do something Yutube has turned off the translation now what!!!
That's a UA-cam thing, so I don't know. I didn't even know there was a translation option
@@mixdownonline Chris why did they turn it off. It's a big disaster for me. I don't know English. UA-cam explained it great. But thanks a lot for the answer. I love you for these videos. Greetings Henio from Poland.

They are on my side
For those interested, in 2022 Donner introduced a very impressive 1176 based design, the [35! dollars] *Donner LAX COMP Compressor/ Limiter* . There is simply no OL influencer backing whatsoever surrounding this product and it's a shame because I own a LAX COMP. It sounds excellent. It's 100% analog. Contains one SM (surface mount) LM3080 transconductance IC, four SM transistors, and 80 other SM capacitors and SM resistors.
damn french sibilance hits different lmao
They do
would be delivering the truth if you add a meter at the end of the chain
sorry Chris, but IMO this is a terribly annoying vocal to demonstrate with.
