I have been working on a very challenging mix of my acoustic 2 djembe, bass drum and high hat compositions . . . Cleaning up and balancing the bass tones from the two djembes and the bass drum, plus the high and mid tone melodies from the djembes, and then high hat . . . Needless to say , thins project has got me digging much deeper into the world of EQ . . . Adding the Infinity EQ and Eiosis Air EQ Premium has been a game changer . . . Yet knowing what to boost has to go alaong with knowing what to reduce . . . And here You come in . . . Right On Time . . . ! . . . 🙂

Right as the 700 hz example started, a trash truck outside started backing up, and I was like "🤯 this foo's not playing! 🤯" I'll keep an eye on that frequency now. Thanks!

When it comes to all frequencies between 3k and 5k, especially on guitars, beware of how much you cut.
If you remove too much, some other bell will become annoying.
An exapmle is right here on this video.
At 4:03, when the first resonance was cut that much, another one appears and it sounds even worse.

There are no bad frequencies, everything sounds bad when you boost it enough. Its all about context. Some frequencies tend to build up across tracks so it makes sense to tame them for balance..or not. It all depends on the mix. So yet the title is clickbaity and inaccurate but actually there is some good info here, keep an eye on these frequencies as some of them are prone to buildup, especially 350-500, idk if thats on this list or not. Trust your judgement, over cutting can remove character which is bad too
I'm surprised we still have videos showing the boost and sweep technique used on everything.
EQs are resonators and will resonate any frequency and make it sound nasty if boosted enough.
That is why Pro Q 3 is so great, you can sweep without the boost and listen to a region without the nasty resonance.
But yes, the frequency ranges listed can be and often are troublemakers and it makes sense to check them out, but they shouldn't be mindlessly cut every time.
That's why i always cut around 2 or 3 db on those frequencies. That way u can take a little proportion of what annoys you and still keep the essence of the frequence
Though you guys are right, it’s still good to listen to the theories behind theses frequencies, so you understand what 5th sound like and what it means. Also why an engineer makes certain decisions.
if you actually watch the video he says multiple times not to just mindlessly cut the frequencies mentioned in the video, and he even specifically mentions the 300hz and 700hz areas (it's even in the description lol) and that the areas that he mentions in the video might be out by 100hz or so depending on your mix, so congrats on looking like a fuckwit

Something that truly can never be unheard.
It's so essential for high gain guitars, really allows you to crank the overdrive if you know where it (really seriously most likely) needs a cut.

The 4K frequency, before I knew the name and source, I called "The Cicada/Insect Frequency." Megadeth's Endgame record SUFFERS from this awful frequency. It makes it hard to listen to sometimes.

My favorite thing you said, sometimes you listen to old mixes you’ve done and now see that you could have improved them so much with better eq… I love that, that is sooo true. I have done this exact thing. We all are always looks for new and better tricks, but literally… a great EQ knowledge & ear goes beyond what most would expect.

You should try even lower, no joke. rolled off at 7k in a mix and, BOOM, clarity. Highly dependent on the mix of course, but if you have a full loud rock mix, the cymbals will take care of anything around 10k. The guitars just muddy up that range
There's actually some science behind the ghost frequencies, or infrasound, that can be expertly crafted and utilized for horror movies to make the audience feel tension.

In my experience, out of all these frequencies you have mentioned, the one that is the most problematic is 400 Hz especially on bass. Dipping that frequency (or around that area - depending on the track) by around 1 or 2 dB might help clean the mix and if the mix is relatively sparse then it also provides an excellent separation.

Yea but for someone just starting off, it's good to have a clear starting point, especially if you have multiple sources that disagree with each other, because you can test which advice gets you closer to your goal. It's more useful to get clear instruction and advice than to listen to people in the comments who are desperate to be the most objectively correct guy with useless and vague advice

What are your tips for vocals?Which freq to cut or boost? Love your video's. Thank you.
Humans have a secondary perception of sound through our skin and the air movement. That's why, it was shown that recording in 96 KHz makes difference from 44.1 KHz despite we may not be able to hear the entire spectrum. In fact, the sound waves interact between each other at different frequencies and it doesn't mean that if we can't hear the high bands, they don't affect the ones we can.
My frequency i always cut out is in between 2k and 3k , super thin q though , really makes the vocal sound smoother without causing an issue

That 700 was a new one for me. Hearing it soloed in pro q is eye opening. I guess I should think about investing in the fab filter eq as it does have some handy features. Do you find 200hz to be an area of build up? I find myself cutting that in a lot of tracks. You use 300 as an example, but if tuning down I guess that might be similar.
Yes, some mastering engineers routinely cut at 220Hz for that exact reason

I once 'read somewhere' that with bass if you can't hear the note then boost 3-400hz. So after watching this video I tried CUTTING that hz. Far out that's the little bit of golden advice I needed for my bass. THX MAN, subbed and liked =]. From down under........

This was pretty helpful - I'm doing vocals mainly and the game changer for me was not cutting past 10,000Khz other wise it would get boxier and boxier until it muffles and cutting always cutting 80-100hz on the low end 🎉
Yo im def trying this. The 700hz i had no clue, I know 300-600hz for boxy sounds, but I'm trying the 700 instead for this one mix that kept giving me issues. Thanks for the tip! Also I know I'm late, but just got menace and skybox last night. And im very impressed. I also have been around for a while, I purchased a copy of desuckulator when it came out, so 4k is never an issue!!! (I wish yall would bring it back, I actually use it a lot)
You’ll notice that it sticks out a lot once you remove it from something and put it back. It’s a hard sound to forget. And menace and skybox are great tools for the arsenal!

Great content. Can you elaborate on how you'd use a "sub pack" to control the ultra low frequencies? I've been going the "roll off everything below 20-30 Hz and hope for the best" route, but I'd love to know more about a better option.

I wouldn’t recommend this. These are areas to watch out for but you have to make sure that it’s actually a problem in the source material before just doing crazy notches.

Thanks for reminding me of this. I've been stubborn over the years, as I use to cut problem freqs more often, but stopped doing it as much. Thinking, is this right? But it's pretty obvious especially when you solo a freq range with Fabfilter Pro-Q, as it always sounds horrible. Well those harmonics aren't making things pretty but you can also cut too many of them and things lose their character. I'm especially sensitive to 4k and a little above, as it hurts my ears really bad. First noticed this when I was kid, hearing the sound of a large chain on a fence, clanking against itself, there is real pain involved there.
I mostly use dynamic equalisers in heavy sounds instead of regular ones because of the phase shift it causes while using the high pass filter. The sound topography just changes. 350 Hz sure is pure mud but I just love 4-8 kHz can't get enough. :-)
4-8Khz definitely adds the perceived air for mixes.

Some amp and speaker combinations do this by the bucket load....

I still use them though because they have a midrange (especially the Orange) which you cant get anywhere else...

If a frequency doesn’t jump out at you in the mix, don’t mess with it. Boosting any frequency is gonna make it sound horrible. If something jumps out at you, sweep around to find it then cut a bit. If that doesn’t fix it, then maybe re-record it. No reason to just automatically cut stuff without any purpose.
In as much as cutting is important, boosting is necessary after cut

Yeah 4k is definitely annoying, and it'll creep up on you if you've listened to your mix long enough. Aside from what was already mentioned, keep your ears out for this frequency in your overheads and cymbals too. It can get annoying there too.
